Credit Card Points for Car Rental

Looks like I'm close to having enough points on my credit card to cover our rental car for our 10 day October trip. I've never done this before, any negatives to doing this or hidden fees?? The car would be through Dollar. Looking at the Rewards site they would even cover the insurance.

I did something like this last trip using our AmEx points. I didn't have enough for the entire cost but booked through American Express nonetheless...well, sort of. I think I booked through AmEx and they advised as to which car companies participated with them, then explained how much "money" I had in credits, and told me to tell the car company I chose I would have an AmEx coupon for "X" number of dollars upon pick-up of car. Long story short....it worked great! Good luck.

No issues with this. With most AMEX cards you can also add up to 5,000 points for some transactions, their advanced points and you must pay them back within 12 months (usage of your card and accruing points).

We always use my Holiday Inn points from business travel. They have an agreement with Hertz and that's the way we go.

We pay taxes and airport fees only. These are expenses Hertz must pay even if they collect no $$$ from us.

On a standard 10-day WDW trip, we generally pay about $35 for the 10 days.



We never use the insurance through the rental company. AMEX covers this....and actually my homeowners/car insurance policy covers everything the rental car company offers.

If you rent through Dollar, get setup with their frequent renters program.....generally these programs allow you to bypass checkin (BIG time savings!!) I LOVE arriving at the Orlando airport Hertz facility to find my name and space # on the big board. Short walk to the space....and we are gone!
