Covid Comeback?

I still mask if I am going to be in a crowded indoor space, and I mask at places where people tend to go when they are sick, like the grocery store or pharmacy. I mask indoors at Disney, on Disney transportation, or if I am in a crowd outdoors such as parades or fireworks, where the same people are standing near me for an extended period of time.

So far as I am aware, I have not yet had Covid unless I was completely asymptomatic and did not know to test. I would prefer to keep it that way.
This is us, and will be us for a bit longer. Why not? We found over the past couple years masking at airports and on planes has not only kept us Covid-free, but any-sickness-free! Prior to Covid, it was very common for us to come home from Disney with sniffles, cold, flu, etc. Masking during Covid showed us a little personal protection allows us to be healthier later - or at least seems to reduce the risk. We mask for us - it should be of no concern to anyone else! It doesn't impact them.

DH is currently getting over his latest round. His whole store pretty much had it last week. I'm sure I've got it again as I've got a scratchy cold. I had way back in late 2020 and it was bad. Now its just annoying. I'm in nursing school right now and COVID isn't even a required vaccine in the program. If you're sick for any reason, you are supposed to wear a mask and keep yourself distant.

What I think is strange about people wearing masks is a lot of the ones I see lately either wear it under their nose sure germs don’t come out the nose Or even under the chin. Then why bother. They act like their doing something great unless you wear right it doesn’t do anyone any good.

On another note on Covid. We went to a concert after things opened up again we didn’t need masks anymore
A few days after the show I came down with Covid very mild case
A few days after we saw the group they were playing at our state fair
A few days after that show a few of our friends that were at that show caught it. They weren’t at the earlier show we we’re at. So there must have been someone at the earlier show that maybe had it and didn’t know or was just getting over it that then were at the state fair show. Strange how it curculates

My 86 y/o dad came down with it today. He has been a No-Vid up unti this point. He woke up "feeling unwell." Basically body aches and a 99.2 temp in the morning. No respiratory symptoms. He took a test and was positive pretty quickly. We'll see how it progresses. He and my mom are pretty nervous because neither has had it.

Um, yea, YOU were at the earlier show, caught Covid, then went to the state fair show. So yes, SOMEONE who had Covid went to the state fair show.

I'm so glad someone brought this up today. Yesterday we went to our local Walmart, completely unaware of any uptick in Covid, so we were unmasked. Practically everyone else was wearing a mask, and a couple people gave us kind of dirty looks and moved away. Was wondering "Does everyone else know something we don't?" Now we know, the answer was "yes".

I think she said/typed her FRIENDS went to the State Fair, not them....unless I misunderstood her post.

Knock wood - no one I know or work with has have it recently to my knowledge. We got our two initial shots, and one booster but nothing since then. Hopefully it stays that way.

I think from what I've heard the latest strains aren't as deadly… but they CAN still be nasty. One friend who has it just told me to kill them… in jest I hope!

Getting a booster in 40 minutes. We have an Alaskan cruise in 2 weeks and I'm hearing Covid is heavy on the trains and cruises.

Last booster was January.

So far, I've never caught it.

Edit- Although I made an appointment online, when I got to Walgreens they told me the vaccines had been pulled until they come out with flu shots in August.

They apologized that the app allowed us to make appointments and encouraged us to come back in August.

So no boosters today. If I can't get one before the cruise, I'll just mask diligently.
Interesting. I got my booster on July 11th. They said my timing was perfect as they don't expect the updated 2024/25 vaccine to be available until the end of November and as someone over 65, that 4 month stretch is when I am due for another booster. The hospital group I belong to is REALLY pushing the boosters, no pull back here.

I'm immunocompromised and feel like Covid has never gone away and never will. It will just continue to mutate. Some strains may be worse than others. I wear a mask in public spaces about 95% of the time. Not just for Covid but for other viruses as well. When I get sick...it tends to last at least a month and really ruins my day to day life a lot.

I will continue to get an annual booster if it's recommended by my doctor. And I will continue to mask and hope for the best.

So far I've only gotten covid once. (And yes, I test multiple times every single time I get an illness.) I was able to take Paxlovid and my experience was much more mild than with non-Covid viruses I've had.

I have to say, the biggest lesson I have learned is how important hand washing is. Yup, my mom the nurse preached it, but the past 4 1'2 years I haven't had my usual colds and upper respirator infections. I did get covid in March 2023, exposed during an 8 day 3,600 mile road trip, but that was the only illness I have had. I used to get a couple of colds/upper respirator infections a year.

COVID may be here for a long time, but unlike the flu, I still think it can do long-term damage if you get it over and over again, just from what I've read.

I need to get a booster...still only had it once in 2022 and it was very mild for me, but still never know what can happen in the future. I'm trying to actually recall when I last got my booster...think it was last September

If that's what she meant, I apologize as I obviously misread.

As far as Covid, I remember discussions on this board in 2020 with many of us saying it will always be around, just like the flu has been around since 1918(?).

We still mask in grocery stores which for 4 years have been the "best" place to get Covid - worldwide!
We mask in other stores as well, and in crowds.
I used to get sick constantly but I haven't been sick since January 2020, and I thank the Lord
for His protection as well as His direction that March for our family to wear masks (via DH's work requirement).

I have to say I'm concerned with people on here stating they knew they had Covid but
still went to work & other places with symptoms!
Didn't we learn anything in the last, four years?
If you're sick and you believe you can make others sick (coughing, sneezing, etc.)
you are supposed to stay home!

This includes cold symptoms, flu symptoms, and yes, since 2020, Covid symptoms.

Reading these comments makes me very disappointed, and I will certainly continue masking.

As for the OP's question, yes it's rising daily here, my state is now "high" and DH's work has
had several people out. One young man was out for 2 weeks - said he was very sick.

Our daughter got a booster 2 weeks ago at the same Walgreens. So the pulling of the shots was very recent.

I checked our Walmart app and it also said try back later when flu shots come out

I was sick 3 weeks ago. My third time. I was boosted in the fall and got Paxlovid right away and had only medium symptoms. This new strain seems to be pretty transmissible.

I thought I heard that the current booster that is out now is not working on the strains going around and it's best to wait until the fall? I don't know. By the fall, there will be another strain. The boosters can't keep up.

As to whether it's now become "like the flu" well, yes, in that it's endemic. I'm 60 years old and have probably have the actual real-deal flu maybe 3 times in my life. Maybe it's more and they were milder versions. I never vaccinated either. I'm hearing of people having COVID 3, 4, 5 or more times now over a 4 year period. I don't think anyone gets the flu that often. That's where it differs and what I hate about it.

I never used to worry about the flu and traveling etc. unless I was traveling from about Dec-March (you know, flu season). I know it's always around but it's transmissability is much lower than COVID. I just hate thinking "is *this* vacation going to be ruined by COVID?" Because it could be any and all of them.

Everyone in my mother's assisted living facility has had it over the last few weeks. She tested positive on July 7th and had to quarantine for 2 weeks. Hers was mild, thankfully - she has COPD. We were there visiting that weekend but none of us caught it. I don't think it's ever leaving - it'll just be another seasonal illness like the flu and colds.

I was on a cruise for 12 days in the Caribbean and got off last week with a sickness. Others in our FB group have reported positive tests for Covid and quite a few are like me and feel yucky. It's been 5 days since we got off the ship and am feeling better, but this appears to be slower recovery than I've had from other infections before.
