I have to say that I am glad my daughter and I have more interesting things to talk about when we are together Glad I am raising an educated gal who would be perplexed if I started playing "let's point out fakes" with her

Okay, last post then I'm done, because you are taking pot shots now. Not that I need to explain, but for you, I will. Pointing out the fakes to my DD is an education for her to identify if she is going to be ripped off in future. She now knows that if she is to spend her hard earned money, she will pay for what she is expecting and not for a fake. It has no bearing on the purse carrier, but you probably don't believe that anyway because you already have your mind made up what kind of person I am, since you know me so well from the few posts this evening. The Olympics are on, I'm watching the skating (dare I admit that or do I open myself up to more jests?). On the advice of a legal friend, I'm calling the FBI ICE agency in Williston tomorrow morning to file a complaint against the kiosk and I'm done. Have a wonderful evening everyone. OT but I have a questions about Coach purses.. I thought the "c"s were supposed to line up in a certain way. My old one does, but the one my dh got for me for Christmas from Macys (I have the gift receipt) doesn't.

The "c"s have been modernized the past few years. They still sell the old style, but I'm mostly seeing the new style around here now.

Why not tell her to only purchase from an authorized retailer?
A bag from Macy's or Dillards will not be a knockoff

But our whole society is based on status items. Does that make each and every company "guilty?" I mean, no one needs a tv, no one needs a new car, or closets full of clothes, or big homes, or vacations...

If we were all trying to be both globally responsible and acting the best interest of humanity we would live on as little as possible, consume as few resources as possible, and give everything we didn't need to help those who needed it. But we aren't all Mother Theresa... I don't see how a new car is any less of a status item than a handbag, or a large screen tv, or a vacation, or new clothes.

It was mentioned that there is nothing inherently superior in a designer bag, and that is absolutely true. But there's also nothing inherently bad in it either, it's just a bag. The fact that someone values it enough to pay a lot of money for it, means just that. Same as any consumer good. The fact that someone envies, or wants something and feels entitled to have it without paying for it is not a justification for supporting crime.

I agree with you on most of those points. I don't believe our society is based on status items (at least for most of us it is not), but I do agree that you can find a Lexus version of just about every consumer good. And no, envy doesn't justify supporting crime. But let's just ACKNOWLEDGE that these are status items. That would be a good place to start.

She has bought 4 purses from Ebay (2 Coaches, an LV and a Burberry) and has been able to tell whether they are fake or not. Pretty good for a 16-year old working hard to spend her money wisely. And she couldn't understand why the snarkiness. Nice job.

(I'll just probably disappoint when I'm not impressed.) Right now I think the new status item of choice is an iPhone. Darned if those things aren't everywhere! And you'll never convince me that people have them because they need one.

I just think most items are status driven on some level. You can get by on very little, but most people don't. They make choices based on what they like, want, and can afford. (Okay, maybe not that last one... But then, that just goes to show how much people are willing to do to acquire "stuff" in general.)

Anyway, I'm happy the general consensus seems to be counterfeit = bad, regardless of what the actual opinions are about designer handbags.
