Could this be autism?

I have an autistic son and we went through a lot of testing before he was diagnosed with autism three years ago and just today I had to talk with the school diagnostician and answer the same questions as before and sign papers to have him re-evaluated. They do this every three years so I feel very comfortable in the fact that they just don't label kids and forget about them.

I cried like a baby when they labeled my other ds with being mentally retarded but his teacher told me that if a label will get him the services and help he needs then it I should consider it a positive thing and I have.

I think that is so hard to hear. Even though my son was born with Down syndrome and of course that means he is MR, the first time it was said out loud to me was very hard. And they still haven't come out and said he is (which if course we know he is), but at the time he was 3, just finished psychological evaluations and I was told, he possibly was, but was too young to say for sure until he was older. So I guess technically, it can't be written on his chart until later (even though his teacher told me the other day they don't use that term in our school district anymore, so I guess those exact words won't be on there).

I to have adopted that same attitude with the school district. Bring on the label if it means more services. Though, I'm not shy at requesting more, and I have been known to walk away from an ARD in disagreement and demand that we return in 10 days with a better solution. That really gets their attention!

I have to agree with others. We can't diagnose a child in cyber space.

I do however, know a few people with asperger's. They seem normal at first. Then you start to notice some things are not quite right.
You think that their parents totally did not discipline them at all.

They all have different degrees. It is a form of autism. All very intelligent.
Their brains just can't process basic social skills.

One is like Eddie Haskell on Leave it to Beaver. Good looking and charming, but always getting himself in trouble because he lacks a few skills in the social department. He doesn't understand why people have a problem with what he said/did. He didn't do anything wrong.

One is just.....really weird. She comes across as a social retard for sure. Farting away loudly and stinkly while conversing with you. When confronted, she says, "But why? It's a perfectly natural thing!"

One boy comes across totally extremely downright rude and self centered. He doesn't understand social hierachy at all. He will treat a three year old and a 65 year old with the same rude argumentive treatment.
You want to slap him. And he doesn't understand why. He will throw a big temper tantrum in the middle of a church service if provoked.

There you are....three levels of asperger's syndrome. Two are siblings.
WOW as a parent of a disabled child this post scares me. I have one question? Do you think the words you used to describe these kids is socially sensative/appropriate?

I'm sorry folks, but both Sue (post 19) and I (Post 16) asked people to play nice and there are still too many highly charged comments. I think this thread has run its course.
