Couch to 5k

Did W6D1 last night and had to stop during the 8 min run and walk for about 2 min. I don't know what happened, but I felt like I had not done 5 weeks.

And just for the sake of asking. What, if anything, do you guys do the other four days each week? Weights? Ride a bike? Zumba? I used to walk five days a week and I think I might need to add in another couple days of working out, but don't want to walk. What else do you all enjoy?

I teach Jazzercise 3-4 days per week. It combines the cardio and weights so I think that's a good "off day" workout.

I had to do that on W5D2, I didn't worry about it to much. Just hang in there!

I'm headed down stairs in a few minutes to attempt W6D1.
Wish me luck!!

Maybe on Thursday. I called and she wants me to take more sudafed and do neti pots (which I HATE) because she thinks I have a blocked eustation tube.

does anyone like the neti pots? Guess we hate the illness more! Good luck, I know they are saying no more antibiotics for ear infections - :confused3 does that mean you have to wait till it becomes something far worse? Hope the neti pots work for you!

i just printed the C25K training list and week 3 has you speeding for 200 yards 3x the first week! Brisk five-minute warmup walk, then do two repetitions of the following:
Jog 200 yards (or 90 seconds)
Walk 200 yards (or 90 seconds)
Jog 400 yards (or 3 minutes)
Walk 400 yards (or three minutes)

I dont want to be obsessive or anything... :rolleyes1

Thanks for the support and encouragement, this is a mental challenge as much as it is a physical one - I have the memories of how hard and how far 13.1 miles - - and I'm really not in the place to do that - I want to quit... each and every day!

OH I hear ya!! I want to quit too!! But we can't! We have to do this for ourselves!!

As for the yardage. On the app it doesn't tell you how far to run, just for how long. I really wouldn't worry about the length you are running. If you run the same route outside use bushes, houses and telephone poles as markers for distance. But just for your own mental notes, Like ok W1D1 I ran from the maple tree to the yellow house. W1D3 I was able to run from the maple tree to the blue house. Etc......

If you are using a treadmill, just track your miles.

Speed training comes later. Not in the typical C25K program but one of the training programs I came across has a intermediate 5K training program that does speed work. Integrated into the program are days where you run a mile as fast as you can.
We don't need to worry about that right now. Maybe if we wanted to win the 5K, but right now we just want to finish!

And pish posh on the no antibiotic for ear infections!!! I had chronic ear infections as a kid and I've ruptured my ear drum when I was 4 because it was so bad. I don't mess with it! Give me the meds!

Yes, I have a friend who LOVES to Neti Pot. She doesn't have health insurance so she does it every single day to help her stay healthy. My doctor *did* give me antibiotics but even after finishing them I still have pressure and pain. I just added Afrin to the mix for the next 3 days. Afrin will clear just about any blockage, LOL.

I have to admit that I was a little "huh?!?" when you joined our little beginner runner thread. Here you are with all your experience including a marathon when most of us are not even sure we can do a 5K without dying. But ... I see now that you are just like the rest of us . Wanting to be up for the challenge but not really sure if we are or not. Wanting to quit every single day (I do at least once per run) but slogging through anyway. I admire that you finished a marathon but I admire you even more for joining us newbies and starting back at ground zero with the rest of us :thumbsup2.

I think that the time/yards thing is an either/or. Either you walk 200 yards at a slower pace and then run 200 yards at a faster pace *or* you walk 90 seconds at a slower pace and then run 90 seconds at a faster pace. The distance option is probably designed for people who are running on a track. I go by time.

Hi C25Kers!

My name is Carissa and I first did the program last January. I graduated and went on to compete in a 5k, 10k, half marathon, and an 8k. However, once I finished the program, I never again ran for more than 5 - 6 minute intervals. I'm a run/walker (more like a jog/walker). I took time off after the half to try and heal a groin strain. Then we bought our first house and I just recently got the treadmill up and running in our new house. :cool1:

I decided to do the program again in the hopes that I can increase my overall speed. I'd also like to be able to completely run a 5k without any walk breaks, just to know that I CAN do it. I'm currently on week 2.

I look forward to getting to know you all. :goodvibes

I use a product call Hydrasense - it's a bit pricey but I find it easier to use than a neti pot. It's pressurized and it shoots the saline solution up into your nasal cavities. Great way to reduce any stuffiness and/or length of a cold. It's a weird sensation at first but it works well.

Woo Hoo! I DID IT! I finished W4D2!
I can't believe how hard it was on Monday and how much easier it seemed today. :confused3 I was definitely breathing hard by the end, but we were still talking a bit right up to the finish...
There was NO WAY I was doing any talking Monday..it was all I could do to breathe.
I am a happy, happy girl right now. :yay:

Good job indimom !!!!

Tried W6D1 but my head just wasn't in it. I quit about 1/2 way through the 8 minute run. I did get a mile in so I got some kind of exercise but not enough.
the tops of my feet were really hurting and I'm not sure why.

I think I'm going to go back to week 5 tomorrow.
DH is coming home tonight!! So I'm happy, it will take some of the load off of me.

Finally did W3D3.

However I modified it a bit. I made all my walks into 1 minutes. I had a guest over and didn't want them to get annoyed so I tried to cut it down. It went well :goodvibes and I'm ready for week 4!

I had posted the same thing a couple of days ago. I had to stop and walk for about 2 minutes during the 8 minute run. I'm not sure what happened other than I just wasn't into it. I'm going to try and move forward though and do Day 2. We'll see what happens.

aw - thanks for stating that! I often make perfect sense in my own mind, and dont realize I make little sense to others!

I may have been in 2 half marathons, but I've never really fully participated - how to make this make sense... I start out with great intentions, but I get lazy, and I quit - well in the case of the first Half I thought it was no worries, just a day in the parks for me - and I will admit I weighed less, and was better in all around shape - and I didnt finish! (they turned off the timer by the time I crossed! ) The 2nd half, well it was a nightmare 2010 - it was cold, wet, sleet, etc - and I had the right frame of mind, but again, I wasnt in shape...

and now I havent done a blasted thing since! and I weigh even more, and I'm even less fit (worse shape?)! and Week 1 is kicking my butt! I walked 1 mile yesterday with the dogs and my DS 26 - and I got home breathing hard, red faced, puffing.... that's just not right!

So thank you for being so welcoming!

Oh I know what that feels like - why cant we get our head in this game? :confused3 All I can think of if the top of your feet were hurting is maybe they are swelling? Do you get your shoes from a running shoe store? This I know sounds expensive - but they are really trained at seeing the different ways we walk/run - and the size of feet to the size and specs of different shoe manufacturers... Well worth it - hurt feet is just wrong!

:dance3: W3D3!!

After that 1 mile walk with my son (it was a good pace - but still probably only 20 min mile pace) I met up with my neighbor and promptly fell when the dogs went to greet each other! Took advil, and rested... did a few short walks, stretching... but nothing stressful for me today!

I wear Asics running shoes, which my podiatrist recommended. I think they are just getting worn out. I walk on the outsides of my feet and I noticed a dramatic change in my shoes after the Everest race.
So, I bought 2 new pairs today, one street pair and one trail pair. I also have my new balance minimalists but I can't wear those until I get my foot issues taken care of.

I don't think the pain is from swelling because it happened right away. I'm going to try tonight and see if things change.

I did it! I DID it! I DID IT! W5D3 20 minute run is in the books!

WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!! congrats Robin!!!!

How did it feel?

Week 4 day 1 today. The runs weren't to hard but by the last 5 I just wanted it to be over. My knees are killing me so I need to change something. What got me through my run today was the thought of the new swimsuit I'll get once the 9 weeks are up. :woohoo:

W4D3 completed last night. We decided to get off the track and enjoyed running around town. People watching helps distract from the suffering....:lmao:
We're going to repeat week four though. We don't feel comfortable enough with this to consider moving up to Week Five. Yikes!

My feet, the tops, were very sore at first too and I think it was that I was running too fast, when I slowed down a little, they stopped hurting.

New swimsuit:woohoo: Keep your eye on the prize!

I finished the program this week. GRADUATED!!!! :woohoo: I am finding it hard to motivate myself now to keep going and my 5k is still 2 weeks away. Ticking off those days kept me going. I'm worried, DH's friend did a race last night on the same course and said the entire first half is pretty much all uphill. Even he, who is a runner almost had to walk some of it he said. Lovely.

Congratulations!!! The good news is the second half of the race should be all down hill :lmao:.
