Couch to 5k

I went out tonight for a long walk. I think I did almost 4 miles. At one point the GPS on my iMapMy Run app wasn't working. At the end I tried running a bit and my knee didn't bother me. Tomorrow I'm going to try doing an interval run and see how it goes. I'm just so happy to be finally getting over this hurdle :cool1:.

Yay-glad it's feeling better! Let us know how the interval run goes!

Since my schedule got all messed up with my back hurting last week, I decided to just draw out week 2 a couple of days and repeated.
I was able to pick up some speed and did a 17.1 minute mile (improved over 18 min.) and completed 1.7 miles yesterday!
Sweated my tuckus off!!!

Great job :thumbsup2 I've had to extend some weeks too - no biggie! It has been SO hot. I am drenched in sweat when I get back to my house. Heck -I get sweaty just walking from the inside to my car! I can't wait for fall!

Hi Everyone!!!

I'm so glad to find you all. I'm on my second round of C25K and am currently on W5D1.

I'm 39, overweight by about 110 lbs and never run before I did C25K last year in advance of a 5K in May,2010. I got up to 25 min BUT I don't have a very fast pace (I think I saw a slug pass me once. No.Lie. ;)) and I don't think I ever finished the program to were I got up to 5K. Plus I did all the runs on the treadmill so when it came time for the 5K, let's just say I really wasn't prepared. :rolleyes1 Did I also mention that the course was over grass, gravel, and VERY hilly? AND I the Planter fascitis I had for years decided to flare up three weeks before the race?

I'm happy I not only "finished" it but that I lived to tell about it. ;) I
trot/walked it and got to the finish line eventually.

Anyway, after two feet surgeries and some time off, I'm back! THIS time, I've run it ALL outside which I've discovered is much "easier" for me and I have a quicker pace too! I'm hoping my feet hold up as I'm still experiencing some pain but weirdly, not when I run.

I've lost 11lbs so far (I lost 30 last time) AND I have discovered I actually love to run! I've got a personal goal to run the Princess princess: Half Marathon in 2013. We'll see...

Hi and welcome!!! :welcome: That is awesome that you are back after 2 feet surgeries! I have not run on a treadmill in years (don't have one and I'm not a gym member), but I really like running outside (even though it's HOT!). I'm hoping it helps me with my first 5k. I've found it's best to take it slow and listen to your body. If you can tell that you need a day off, don't be afraid to take it. Congratulations on the weight loss! I also have a goal of the Princess Half, but in 2012. Who knows - maybe 2013 also?

I did W8D2 today - 2.75mi in 33:15. I used 4:1 intervals last time and decided to switch to 3:1. I don't know that I liked it, though. I felt like I couldn't really get in a rhythm with running. Also, it was HOT and HUMID! I was in such a nice, deep sleep when my alarm rang and I did not want to get out of bed :lmao: But I told myself that if I didn't do it then, then I would be running in 90 degree heat and that would be NO FUN AT ALL.

I'm getting super close to 5k distance and need to pick a 5k race. There's an interesting one this month that is a stadium run (goes through the Jaguars stadium). But after thinking about it, it is something I think I should definitely NOT do. It goes up 7 ramps from the bottom to the top of the stadium and then back down. It then ends with going back up 4 ramps. No thank you. I haven't trained on any hills, so I think this race would really discourage me. I need a flat course with nice things to look at. So the one that fits the bill is in early September. That will give me time at a higher distance and mentally I'll feel more prepared.

Hello all! :) I am back in South Carolina visiting my family and I swear the humidity is KILLING me!!! I did W7D3 yesterday and it was just an off day for me. :upsidedow I have decided that intervals are more my style so I ran 4:1 intervals, but just felt off. KWIM? I have days when I run and I feel like I will be able to do the Princess in Feb. with no problems at all. Then ther are days like yesterday when I think that I have lost my mind and that I am crazy for even trying. I have decided to take the weekend off because I am having a lot of pain in my right foot (PF) and wanted to give it a few days to rest. I am hoping my run on Monday will be stronger.

Hi, Taryn! I switched to intervals also, but like you, I've felt off. I sorta liked getting in the rhythm of running continuously, but I switched because I knew there was no way I'd be running the full Princess. So far I've tried 4:1 and today I did 3:1 - not sure which I like best. With the 3:1's I felt like I was stopping so soon, so maybe I'll go back to 4:1 next time?

You are not crazy! What's that saying? Anything worth doing isn't easy? That's what I tell myself when I have those not so great runs. I won't regret training and running the half, but I will regret not trying at all.

I hope your foot feels better soon. Take it easy and remember we have PLENTY of time before the Princess.

I mainly switched back to the intervals because the straight running was causing my hips to hurt. I feel like such an old lady! :rotfl:

I did my interval run/walk last night on the track. It went really well. My knee didn't bother me! :cool1: I'm going to stick with the 100m/100 m intervals for another run and if that goes well I'll up it to 200/100.

I did my interval run last night and it went really great. My knee didn't hurt! :cool1: I'm going to stick with the 100m/100 m interval again tomorrow and if that goes well then I'll up it to 200/100.

I enjoy it some while I'm running, but it is TOUGH! Sometimes while I'm out there I ask myself if it is going to be this much of a struggle every day since I'll be upping mileage until the Princess Half. But I love that feeling of accomplishment when I'm done! I sometimes doubt my abilities too much, but I love proving to myself that I can do things that I never reallly thought I could.

This is what I'm loving about all of this. I never, ever ran 2 miles before and I can hardly believe I'm doing it. Can't wait to say I've run 3 miles! Amazing feeling.

We've repeated a few weeks here and there. You do what you gotta do and it's WAY BETTER than the alternative - quitting.

Yikes! No way would I attempt that stadium run! Scary. Good Luck on your September run. We're hoping we can find a 5K to plan toward also. So far, no luck, but we'll keep looking. I think we need a goal to work toward.

We've had some off days too. Last Monday we ran 23 minutes no problem. Then Wednesday, I was toast at 16 minutes. Another 16 minute day on Friday. 16 Saturday. But, today we went out at 7:30 a.m. and did 23 minutes again with no problem. Strange. But, we figure we'll just keep pressing on and do what we feel we can accomplish. We do not like the run-walk intervals so we are just trying to work our way into longer and longer runs. We'll see how it goes.

I like that. I'll have to keep that in mind on my next "off" day.

I mainly switched back to the intervals because the straight running was causing my hips to hurt. I feel like such an old lady! :rotfl:

Ugh. I know. When did that happen? I swear I was 28 just yesterday. :sad2:

Woo Hoo! Awesome! Sounds like you are over the hump!!!

Keep up the great work everyone! And thanks for all the moral support and advice and tips. I love coming here and seeing how everyone else is doing. Makes me feel like I can do this too!

Thank you all so much for the encouragement. I really appreciate it so much! I do have another question...I'm wanting to do th Princess 1/2 in 2013 and I'd like to find some trip reports of Princess 1/2s, but I cannot for the life of me find any now. I found one a while back, and it is what inspired me to want to run it, so I'd like to find some more and get that feeling again. Please point me in the righ direct. :)

Thanks again!!! Yall are awesome!!!

I did another 100/100m interval run tonight and the knee still feels good. I'm debating whethere to keep at 100/100 for one more run or go ahead and up it to 200/100 on Tuesday. I might try the 200 and if my knee is sore cut back to the 100. It's odd. I feel like I am barely getting a work out. I can't wait to get back up to 3 miles nonstop.

Glad the knee is feeling better Colleen. You will be back to 3 miles in no time. :)

I am not sure where to find trip reports for the 2011 Princess 1/2, but I know a few of us are signed up to run it in 2012. :)

I'm glad your knee is cooperating!

I got put on antibiotics this weekend due to a sinus infection. Somewhere around week 2 of the C25K program I started sneezing - and it's pretty much lasted this whole time. Over the last couple weeks it developed to more of a congestion and Saturday I noticed my tonsils were swollen. I bit the bullet and went to the dr and now am on a course of antibiotics along with some allergy meds. So I think I'm going to give myself a couple days to get better. I wasn't supposed to run today anyways and I'll see how I'm feeling tonight, but probably won't run again tomorrow. It's tough because I don't feel too bad (I've been running stuffy for a while), but I think I really need to give my body time to get rid of this sickness. :sad2:

I finished W4D2 last night. I was better with my breathing (a little), but I noticed that I was still bored and kept looking at the time. I'm not giving up...can't wait to get past this big of being bored. I hope everyone is having a great day! :)

Are you on a treadmill or outside running? Do you ipod? I tried to read while I was running on my treadmill, but it ended up hurting my head.
Hope you get over this hump!

Yes ma'am, on a treadmill. It's so hot outside, I am struggling to get out there and run. :( I do have an Ipod, and I'm still getting fast paced songs that I really like, so I'm sure it will get better once I can find the right songs. :)

Oh my, if I tried to run and read, I'd fall on my face. I'd forget that I was running and just stop and float right off the back of the treadmill. :rotfl: It wouldn't be a pretty sight!!! Thanks for the encouragement! :)

Thanks and hope you are feeling better fast! :flower3:

I got out again tonight and did 200/100m and still the knee feels good! I did a little bit over 2 miles tonight, like 2.3ish. I'll stick with the 200/100 on Thursday and then I guess I'll try 300/100. I'm just so happy I can run again! :dance3:

W3D1 completed last night. Had to slow down a bit on my pace to go faster for a longer amount of time. But I felt like the treadmill at the gym was faster than my treadmill at home - AGH!!

Just got back from South Carolina. I did not do great on my trip...only ran twice. :confused3 My PF in my foot has been brutal so I decided to take it easy. My next run will be W8D2 using 4:1 intervals instead of straight running. I also took a Good Form Running class while I was there. I am hoping to sneak in a short run tomorrow to try out some of the techniques before the race.

And....I JUST SIGNED UP FOR A 5K ON SUNDAY!!! I must be losing my mind, but DH asked if I wanted to do it and I just said yes. Wish me luck! :cheer2:
