Costa Concordia Runs Aground / Deaths Reported

I don't think this specific Captain is going to be at fault alone. One of the articles I read said that there had been a standing history of deviating from the standard course in order to signal different persons on this island. Sounded as if it had become tradition/acceptable on some level. This came from the investigators' findings. If so , Costa is responsible as well.

Of course, we will have to wait to see how this all comes together.

When the Master enters the bridge, the watch officer is still in command, unless the Master takes the *con*. In all situations , normal and emergencies, the Master has the ultiment authority/power and responsiblity.

!

What is that short for? The only thing I can think of is the conning tower of a sub? I used to think it was "com" and short for command. So what/where does Con come from?

I assumed he meant "Control"...the captain takes control of the vessel.

To direct the steering or course of (a vessel).

1. The station or post of the person who steers a vessel.
2. The act or process of steering a vessel.

In the Navy we would Con along side......

what about the three year old? I have searched and cannot find any information. Did that family make it?

From a recent report:

Carnival Corp. estimated that preliminary losses from having the Concordia out of operation for at least through 2012 would be between $85 million and $95 million, though it said there would be other costs as well. The company's share price slumped more than 16 per cent Monday.

Costa executive Foschi said that the Rotterdam, Netherlands, based Smit, one of the world's biggest salvagers, will try to salvage the 290-metre cruise liner and would provide a study by Tuesday on how to extract the fuel.

Foschi said the liner had passed all safety and technical tests in its 2011 evaluation. He added that the company’s main concern was the safety and well-being of the passengers and crew, as well as to ensure fuel doesn’t leak out from the upended hull into water.

“There are no signs of pollution” to date, but officials are on high alert in case the ship suddenly shifts due to worsening weather conditions, Foschi said. Sensors have been put in place to track the movements of the ship.

It sounded from the story, as though the family with the small child were already at a lifeboat station. I would like to think that they were able to get onto another lifeboat.
I've not heard of any of the deaths so far, that one was a child.

What ever happened to Children and Women first ?

Probably went along the wayside with "ladies first". How many men nowadays let a lady in or out of an elevator first? :confused3 Especially on a cruise.

If I'm dressed up, heels on, hair and makeup done, they'll almost always hold a door.

BUT if I'm in schlepping around the kids clothes, no makeup, then only occasionally.

"Funny" how that works. :rolleyes2

Feminism. That's what happened. Arnt we supposed to be equal now or something like that? :)

Vast majority of people would put children first. But as for women...chivalry died a long time ago. Believe it or not, there are women out there that get offended when a man opens a door for them or pays for the whole dinner on a date. So men don't know what they're supposed to do anymore.

That's a cop out. :sad2:

If you're on a date, you can discuss who pays.

In the general public, it's ALWAYS acceptable to let the lady go first, or hold a door. If a so-called "lady" gets offended that you held a door, SHE'S the one with bad manners, not you.

Nicely said.
