We always have it, and I strongly recommend a serving a colcannon with it. We make our colcannon with bacon, and it's usually more popular than the corned beef or cabbage! BTW, get GOOD corned beef and you will enjoy it more...the manager's special is only moments from rancid!

I love cornbeef and cabbage, however, I am the only one in my house that eats it. So the only time I get it is when I visit my mom and she cooks it. I can't see cooking it if I were the only one to eat it.

That's me too! Go to mom & dad's to eat and order the boys and DH a pizza for while I'm gone.

I voted yes always, but I don't eat it. I cook it every year for my DH. Take leftovers to my SIL for her DH (cause she won't cook it at all) and usually will ask my MIL to come over. MY Dh's family is Irish..big time, he would get upset if I didn't make it. the kids and I will eat pizza that day.

Every year my Dad always had his family and friends over the weekend before as a St. Patrick's Day celebration and a birthday party (his b-day is the 16th). Corned beef is actualy dad's favorite. This year he had dental work and he's not up for the party. FH and myself are taking over, I am honored to take over this family tradition. We are making it the day after St. Patrick's Day. We aren't having corned beef on the day of St. Patrick's Day because it's a friday during Lent and we can't have meat on Friday. I am very excited and I can't wait for this weekend! :shamrock:

We have already been told at Mass that we can eat corned beef on St Paddys day. I guess there are always exceptions to the rules.

I love it, not sure if we'll be cooking it this year though as it will be the first anniversary of my grandfather's passing and not sure any of us will be in the mood to celebrate the holiday. But it doesn't have to be St. Patty's for me to cook it or eat it. It's just so good.

I always try to make it on St Patrick's Day (or the weekend after). The whole family loves it--we not only have corned beef & cabbage then, but several times throughout the year.

If I had my way, we'd have it every weekend. :teeth:

We don't make it, nor do we really "celebrate" St. Patrick's day. DH is 100 percent Irish (both his parents immigrated here). Corned Beef and Cabbage is not a dish native to Ireland, rather its origins come from immigrants after they were here in the US.

I'm not a corn beef fan. My mom was born in Ireland, but she never made it for us because my dad didn't like it. It's funny, the bishop in Pittsburgh goes out of his way to remind people not to eat meat on Fridays in lent, including St Patrick's Day, but at the church my mom goes to in Florida, they are having a cornbeef dinner at the church on that Friday! And I believe the bishop in Cleveland always tells them they can eat meat on St Pat's.

Cardinal George from Chicago has told Catholics that there is special dispensation for St. Patricks day and everyone can eat corned beef and cabbage if they so chose.

My grandmother used to make it. I never minded the corned beef but cannot stand cabbage. Since there's only a smidge of Irish in my background, I think I can safely stay away from that menu this & all years. :rotfl:

ABSOLUTELY! I have a wonderful recipe and my kids adore it! They ask for it several times per year. I didn't think they'd like it, but they do. I also make Irish soda bread which they love as well. Can't wait for Friday!

I voted nope not us. But, we have corned beef and red potatoes every year. I don't like cooked cabbage. I am part Irish.

Can't wait for Friday!

Every year! Don't forget the boiled carrots, too. I love it; then I make coleslaw to go with the leftover corned beef. Corned beef on rye with coleslaw :cloud9: and don't forget the extra mustard!

I'm Irish, and yes I make it every year. Along with champ (Irish potatos) and soda bread. sometimes I will also make some scones. Both DDs love champ so I have to make extra of that.

Usually special dispensation is granted for St. Patrick's Day if it lands on a Friday. I read this article on the internet:
http://www.ketv.com/news/7755641/detail.html

So I guess it's an individual parish's decision.

I don't want to start a religious debate, just passing along some info...

I make corned beef, cabbage and potatoes. We aren't Irish. DH is Mexican/Cuban, I am Polish/German and DS is Korean. So, I make it sometime in March, when corned beef is on special, but not particularly for St. Patrick's day. We had it today. I doubt the leftovers will make it until March 17--my son loves it.

Our archdiocese has the special dispensation for Friday this year, but, we will probably be going to the Knights of Columbus fish fry instead. I tried to convince my husband that one needed to be Irish for the dispensation to apply, but, he didn't buy it.

wow.. its so cool to see how many people do, have cornbeef on st pattys day :) :thumbsup2

never had it. the only st. patricks day tradition i have is drinking. a lot.

Cornbeef, potatoes and carrots (all boiled) but no cabbage...not a cabbage fan....I will make the Irish Soda bread this year

Oh, and I watch the Quiet Man with John Wayne...just puts the whole mood together!

Happy SAint Patty's day to all....Oh, I'm 1/2 Irish

Holycow

Our bishop is asking that we instead have no meat on Wednesday and go ahead and have the corned beef on Friday.

Thankfully in the great Irish tradition...you don't have to wait for St. Patrick's day to do that. Any day is acceptable. :rotfl:
