contact lenses or eyeglasses?

Hi!

I will preface this by saying I cannot function at all without either eyeglasses or contacts. I only take them out to shower and sleep. which of the is the best choice for a day in the parks? If I wear glasses I am afraid I will lose them during a coaster ride. If I wear contacts I am afraid I will lose them if water splashes my face. I thought about having both at hand and change as needed throughout the day though I do not necesarily like the idea of the logistics involved. Perhaps I am just worrying too much about this. Riding without and not being able to see the ride I think might not be fun. wait! perhaps I can wear my contacts and wear goggles in rides that involve water! Have any of you done this before? thoughts?

I always wear my contacts on all water rides. Most times, I just close my eyes when I know the big water is coming and keep them closed. I wear my sunglasses to project my eyes also. They are cheap so I really don't care what happes to them.

thanks for the quick reply. i was not even thinking about sunglasses over the contacts which is kind of obvious and will also protect from the sun..... duh!

When I was in Disney as a teenager with my parents many, many years ago I had a funny experience with my contacts. It was either July or August. We always went in the summer because my mom was a teacher so that was when she was off. Anyway, in typical summer weather in Florida, it was very very hot and one of my lenses just dried up and popped out of my eye. I fortunately managed to grab it before it fell and I can remember my mom running like a crazy person through the Magic Kingdom to get a cup with some water just to keep the lens from cracking. Since I am going again in August, I have to remember to have a lot of my disposable lenses with me at all times in case that happens again.

I always start out in my contacts and take a spare pair in my bag i take in the park with me and also pack my solution, case and glasses casue i once ripped a contact and it scratched my eye i couldnt put my back up in

I once had my contact lens fly out of my eye on a roller coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure in NJ! I managed to slam my hands to my face and trap it there before it flew away but after that I always wear sunglasses w/ a string on them on any kind of coaster!

We will be in WDW next week and I have contacts, regular sunglasses, prescription glasses and prescription sunglasses. Covered ALL the bases!

ive been to disney several times and always wore my glasses....on every ride! ive never had a problem with them flying off my face or anything. All you need to do is make sure that the peice behind your ear is bent in an L shape, if its much straighter you'll run into problems. .

I went in June and I wore my glasses. I didn't want anything to happen to my contacts while there although I have disposable I just didn't want to risk it. I wore my prescribed sunglasses most of the time though.

Don't change your regular habits when you go to WDW. If you wear contacts at home, wear them at WDW. If you wear glasses, wear glasses at WDW.

Whether you wear prescription glasses or sunglasses, be sure to use a neck cord to preven losing them on wild rides.

I always wear my contacts at WDW. No problem though I don't go to a water park. There I don't know what I would do. I have a pool at home and swim with my contacts, but have given up diving very much because so much water gets under them that I have trouble getting them tight again without a towel....

We all wore contacts at the parks, never glasses (DH and DS were afraid they would lose their glasses on the rides), and me (who hardly rode anything) just did not want to bothered (sweating or going in/out AC for the shows)! We plan to do this again for our upcoming trip!

I've had some major issues with my contacts this year and right before we left for WDW in June, I got yet another eye infection. It was very serious too. I was so worried about wearing glasses on the coasters, but didn't want to wear my glasses in case I had troubles again at WDW.

The glasses were fine and I rode all the big coasters with the glasses on. I did buy some clip on sunglasses at Walmart though because I have to wear sunglasses.

I actually didn't even really mind the glasses as I always wear sunglasses anyway so it wasn't much different for me.

In all the other trips, I always wore contacts as did the rest of the family and we never had issues with contacts either. I always carried a small bottle of saline, eye drops and an extra case with me though. Walmart and Target sells little bottles in their travel size section in their stores.

I wore my glasses on my first few trips to WDW but they really annoyed me because I had to switch between my regular ones and my RX sunglasses every time that I went in and out of rides. Last year I decided to buy contact lenses for our WDW trip and it was so much easier to just push my cheap sunglasses to the top of my head when I needed to. I actually ended up liking the disposable contacts so much that I now wear them most of the time.

I've never had a lense fly out in any situation - Disney or otherwise. I can't see how a properly fitted lense should fall out anyway (unless swimming underwater with your eyes open).

I take a small pippette of lense lubricator in case a lense gets dry in the heat or under the a/c and I take two spare lenses just in case.

As I use daily disposable lenses, I guess I'm far less worried about losing/damaging one - have you tried them?

I even wear mine when swimming and have never lost one yet (although I can't open my eyes underwater with them in).

When I used to wear contacts lens i would used to put an extra set in my camera bag... that way if something happend everyone else wouldnt have part of there day ruined by having to go back to the hotel or even to the car to get the extra set. Worked liked a charm

There are some circumstances under which even a properly fitted lens (sorry, I'm a Yank, we leave the E off the end of that word - no offense intended!) can fall out.

Swimming, as you know, can wash the lenses out of your eyes. But so can being struck in the face by a garden hose, SuperSoaker squirt gun, or other blast of liquid.

The high wind of a roller-coaster (or other high-speed vehicle such as an open car or motorcycle) can actually blow lenses right out of your eyes. This is easily prevented by either closing your eyes (not always practical) or wearing glasses of some kind to keep the wind out of your eyes. An ordinary pair of sunglasses will suffice, so I wind up wearing my sunglasses even on indoor coasters.

If your lenses dry out badly enough, you can actually blink them out of your eyes. I was careless enough to let that happen once, myself.

Unfortunately, not all opticians properly instruct new lens wearers on the care and feeding of contacts. When my Dad first started wearing them, the optician never told him how to recognize when the lenses were getting dry - he simply handed over a bottle of re-wetting drops and said, "If your eyes dry out, use these."

After hearing Dad complain about blurry vision and a feeling that something was in his eye, I knew his lenses were drying out and told him to use his rewetting drops. He pulled out the bottle, tilted back his head, and instead of dropping a few drops of the stuff into his eye, he shot a high-pressure stream into the eye that promptly washed the lens right out of his head and onto the ground! Fortunately, I saw it, and we were able to save the lens before it was damaged, but after that, I made sure to personally instruct anyone in my family on how to wear and care for contacts.

And frankly, if you cry hard enough, your lenses will wash right out of your eyes. Now, I'm not the type to cry over the fun stuff at WDW, but I have had it happen at funerals or other sad occasions.

Me too! Mainly wear contacts and regular sunglasses though. I've never lost a contact lens at WDW (I even wear them at Typhoon Lagoon). I wear daily disposables though-so no great loss if one 'goes missing'. As our flight is so long I wear my glasses to travel in, have my presciption sunglasses in hand luggage for the drive to WDW.

I wear my contacts almost exclusively - I can't even safely drive with my glasses.

Wanted to thank you all for reminding me to take extras and some saline to the parks - that could be a real mood killer!

I used to ALWAYS wear contacts to amusement parks. On our last trip to Disney, I would have needed to get new contacts, checkup, prescription, etc, so I decided to just wear my glasses. I had absolutely NO problem keeping them on riding all the thrill rides. I did put my hand on the bridge during the loop on RNR. Other than that I did nothing special.

I also never had a problem with contacts on water rides at other parks.
