Considering canceling August trip following FL handling of Trayvon Martin murder.

.

Absurd-why come here if you're really that concerned?

When I cross the border into Canada who is to say that I might encounter someone who is carrying a knife or driving recklessly.

OMG- we love Mont Tremblant but I don't guess we'll go back because Natasha Richardson fell and had a brain bleed and died tragically. How do I know that your Canadian ice won't make me slip and hurt myself or worse?
You have ice all over the place. Chances of me slipping and getting hurt are a lot better than you coming here and getting shot. Maybe ice on the ground should be illegal.

BTW, don't bring up anything from the other thread. You might get pts.

I didn't even read the other thread, so I don't know what was, or wasn't discussed. I only commented based on what I read from the news story online.

I'm kinda new around here. What are these "points" people are mentioning?

We really don't. Other than police officers and hunters, I don't know a single person who has a firearm of any sort. It's just not part of our culture. Growing up in the country, almost every household had rifle for hunting, but when my husband hunted, he used one of my father's rifles. Back then, you just had to have your hunting license and your Firearm Safety documentation...I guess they assumed that if you had a hunting license, you'd be using a rifle. Since then we had the ill-fated federal gun registry and I doubt using somebody else's rifle would be allowed now.

There are certainly crimes involving firearms so I know that the criminal element in Canada has access to, and uses, guns. Ordinary citizens, in general, do not.

When I talk about being nervous to be in the United States, I am thinking of incidents of "road rage" that get out of control because somebody who is legally entitled to carry a weapon, pulls a gun out of the glovebox. We are very close to the border and a lot of our programming is from American affiliates. We see Detroit news almost every night and there is a lot of gun violence. It scares me because it is not my world.

Wow, then why do you come to the U.S. at all? You paint it as a very scary and awful place to be. Why not just stay in Canada, if you feel that it is so much safer. I would think Canada has some beautiful vacation destinations.

And BTW, I've never owned a gun in my life. Most people I know, don't own a gun.

Not that I would know:rolleyes1, but if you break the rules (by attacking people, or talking about banned things, or rehashing locked topics), you could (if caught) receive infraction points from the mods. If you get too many, you might have your signature or tags revoked, or if you get a lot of points, you might get the ax. Not that I would know any of this from personal experience.:cool2:

There are rules about discussing topics from threads that were closed by a moderator. I may have inadvertently done that when I mentioned something from a news story I read online, that apparently was discussed in a closed thread as well. Sorry about that.

When you start a new thread on a "closed" topic, or reference a closed thread, you could get infractions which are calculated as "points". Minor infractions might be 5 or 10 points, and are more of a warning, while more major infractions are "worth" more points and could cause you to be temporarily banned, lose your "signature", lose your ability to send private messages, or be permanently banned.

Anyway, this was not meant in any way to "bash" America or Americans. I just understand somewhat what the OP was saying about not wanting to feel she was supporting the Florida State Law in question, by spending her vacation dollars in that state.

OH yeah!! Toronto area, I've been there once on a band trip in 1990 I think it was. Imagine our surprise at turning on the news at 11 to get a taste of local flavor and coming up with a Detroit station in the hotel. Thank God we lived outside of Philly, cause the news taught us that we did not want to live in Detroit.

FTR most of the USA is nothing like Detroit, nor is it like Philly. The news exaggerates everything and plays it up in the worst possible way to get ratings. That's how its worked for years, and it aint gonna change anytime soon. Cable news stations only make it worse. While we do have "the right to bear arms" I honestly cannot remember the last time i heard of any local road rage incidents involving them. In my city the last time time I read about citizens using a gun was to stop a robbery at a local sports bar. It worked, and the bad guy died. Which is how its supposed to work. Nothing like this FL case.

I will admit that I haven't read all 9 pages of this thread, but the pages I have read astound me.....The majority have convicted Zimmerman, eventhough EYEWITNESS accounts say that poor innocent Trayvon attacked Zimmerman, hit him, broke his nose, and proceeded to bang his head repeatedly against the ground....Oh my, poor innocent Trayvon.

Why is there absolutely NO mention of the fact that the new black panthers have put a $10,000 bounty out on Zimmerman, eventhough there is no arrest warrant, or anything else from the authorities??? This is basically a death warrant.

Why is there absolutely no mention of the fact that RACIST spike lee tweeted an address to his hundreds of thousands of followers, that he thought was Zimmerman's? Can you say accesory to murder, etc.?

But no....Bleeding hearts and mainstream media ignore these "insignificant" types of things.....God forbid a white group put a bounty out on black person. We would never hear the end of it...

Did you read my first post in this thread at all??? I don't let my fear that some wacko might have a gun impact my family's ability to travel to the United States. We don't go alot, but occasionally, we go.

You are allowed to have guns for personal protection. From what I have read on these boards, many people have them in their cars or their handbags. It isn't like that in Canada, it's not something that ever crosses my mind as we go about our daily lives. It is unfamiliar to me and it makes me nervous when I travel to the U.S., nothing more, nothing less.

Did you read any of the pages? :confused3 Wrong thread. I think you are looking for the one that has been closed......and for good reason.

Did you not just read the few posts above this one...that it's against board rules to be talking about a topic that was closed over on another thread. If you don't mind getting points, I guess that's your call.

Why so defensive? She has some good points.

I read 4 of the 9 pages. That was enough. I have no idea about any closed threads..Points? Not aware of points...Is that like double secret probation?
Not really sure why what I wrote would incur the wrath of a moderator. I didn't lie, I didn't mislead, I didn't provide any personal attacks. My conscience is clear, but you go right ahead and judge.

Have a nice night.

Wasn't intentionally trying to be defensive.

Just expressing my opinion, like the poster was.

Just noticed you're from MI, as the pp was talking about Detroit being scary. Being from NY I have developed a thick skin - we often get the rough end of public opinion!

Despite what we would like to think, Orlando has never been a "happy place". It is a dangerous place with dangerous people. As long as we stick near the theme parks away from the thugs and gangbangers and keep our eyes open, we're probably OK. I think the difference with the Conceal Carry and the SYG law is that we now realize that people who are NOT thugs or gangbangers are suddenly dangerous too. I don't blame people for being afraid. However I, for one, won't let fear of the thugs, gangbangers and conceal carriers rule me when I go to Orlando this week. It *might* stop me from flipping off some jerk who cuts me off .

Well, most of it anyway... its like watching a train wreck in slow motion.... I just couldnt look away!

Go, dont go... do what you have to you. In my humble opinion a 9 yr old isnt really going to understand, or accept this as a valid reason to cancel a much anticipated WDW trip. But its your child, your decision, your money.

Man, my eyes are burning after reading this. Must ....go....for....wine.... and vow to never look at this thread again.
