Considering canceling August trip following FL handling of Trayvon Martin murder.

:lmao: This thread has gone from odd to hysterical.
Please explain what is hysterical about what I said?

Orlando 3rd Most Dangerous in US:

Safe and Dangerous Places in Orlando:
http://news.travel.aol.com/2010/08/16/safe-and-dangerous-places-in-orlando/

FTR, I grew up in the city of Chicago. I have been assaulted, my (then) boyfriend was shot and my car was broken into twice. I am a very pragmatic person and not a worry wort in any way. I don't live my life in fear. Neither do I stick my head in the sand. I am aware of my surroundings at all times. It is an instinct that that developed as a city girl and I don't park that instinct at the Purple Gates.

I read 4 of the 9 pages. That was enough. I have no idea about any closed threads..Points? Not aware of points...Is that like double secret probation?
Not really sure why what I wrote would incur the wrath of a moderator. I didn't lie, I didn't mislead, I didn't provide any personal attacks. My conscience is clear, but you go right ahead and judge.

Have a nice night.

Huh?

Didn't say you lied
Didn't say you mislead
Didn't say you attacked

Was trying to explain that if there is a thread that has been closed, that you could receive points from a mod, for discussing the topic of a "closed" thread.

Wasn't trying to judge you at all. Sorry if it came across that way.

Your description of Orlando and all the gang bangers running around and how you are probably safe as long as you are at the theme parks. Your statement that Orlando is a "dangerous place with dangerous people."

I'm beginning to wonder how some of the people on the Dis make it out their front doors and down to their mailboxes each day.

No hard feelings.
Like I wrote, I really wasn't aware of any closed threads or their content. I was only responding to what I read in this thread. I just think we all should hold our tongues on the Trayvon Martin case until all facts come out....Eventhough I definitely expressed an opinion! Forgive my transgression!

Did you read my links? Did you read the one about Orlando being the 3rd most dangerous city in the US? Yeah, that's real funny. What about this one about Orlando Crime Rates: http://www.clrsearch.com/Orlando_Demographics/FL/Crime-Rate . It's also a real riot :lmao:.

You're forgiven. :rotfl:

So what would make you think you were safe as long as you are near the theme parks? :confused3
Safer. Every city has safer places and more dangerous place. Orlando's economy is largely based on tourism and the areas around the theme parks are where the tourists stay and visit. Those area are kept safer. I found an interesting map that pin points the murders in 2011 on a Google Map: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=U...d=204519765395755000401.000498f32b8f370f74000

Only 1 is near the Disney theme parks (a sad story about local parents killing their child for urinating in his pants) and none are near the Universal or Sea World theme parks.

So when you land at MCO or drive from WI, do you google map it to avoid all the potential danger zones?

I'm not trying to pick on you, honestly. I just think some of the things people have said in this thread are ridiculous, contradictory and rather insulting.

I'm afraid of the big, bad scary (fill in the blank......Orlando, Detroit, USA, to name a few options) but I go to the theme parks and breath a sigh of relief when I make it home safe and sound. Or, I'm disgusted with ONE case so I am going to go........where??? Where could one possibly go that would agree with 100% of their values?

Ugh! I recognize I am getting nowhere except more irritated so it is off to bed for me. Stay safe everyone!

Yes, how the Stand Your Ground law appears to have been interpreted in this instance is beyond my comprehension. It seems clear to me that this man should be arrested for murder and that the SYG law protects him from that, well, frankly, I can't comprehend how that seems right to anyone.

This one incident is not how I view the entire state or country. It is an isolated incident, I get that. What scares the heck out of me is that when I am in your country I am aware that anyone I encounter might legally be entitled to carry a gun. That is not part of my reality, and it makes me uncomfortable and apprehensive. I am not hiding in a corner cowering in fear but after my time visiting you is over, I am happy to be home, safe and sound.

For what it's worth, I am always relieved to cross the bridge back into Ottawa from Quebec, too. That's a whole 'nother world over there ;)

Wha ha ha ah. My country has a total no gun law and we have daily more shooting incidents than the US.
We always leave the US with grate pain in our harts and we would love love to get a Green Card but that is just not possible.
O and just FYI in my country 80& of the crimes like rape are committed by Hoodies and we are working on a law to forbid wearing hoodies total.

This thread is strange. I'm here right now because I have insomnia and I decided to price a trip to Florida. I can't imagine not going because of this horrible event. Sadly things happen everywhere and I refuse to stay home.

A few weeks ago there were two shootings on I-Drive within a week of each other. So even the tourist areas aren't your little safe haven, no matter what your map may tell you.

It's not about agreeing 100% with every thing or every one.

It's more about where you feel your personal "line in the sand" is.

I no longer bank at bank of America,Yes I fully know that most commercial banks are probably just as greedy and unethical but I can no longer support this bank that has routinely IMO picked profit and greed over the little guy.

For me it's Arizona. Yes I know there a millions of fine people living in Arizona and other border states are probably trying to enact the same type legislation but I find their recent stance requiring "producing papers" too offensive to ever give them my tourism dollars in the near future.

like I said before I have no problem with consumers voting with their dollars. I think Disney gets away with crappy food because people justifying it with "well every place else serves crappy food". I've accepted higher prices with the justification of every place is raising thier prices but I can no longer give them my hard earned vacation dollars to get mediocre tasting food. and saying "6 flags has terrible food also" doesn't cut it for me.

If some one feels a place is unsafe, then by all means totally avoid it, I have no problem with that and sorry saying to me "well every place you go can be unsafe" is not an acceptable answer.

times square NY was notorious when I was growing up, you better believe when the city realized how much money they were lousing and when disney said they would not invest until they cleaned it up. Magically the XXX theaters went away, a police station popped up and darn near on every corner you've got beat cops.

Sorry, I am a firm believer nothing effects change quicker than saying "I'm not spending my money there".

Your stance with Arizona is totally different than what people have posted here.

Your line in the sand is over an immigration policy that is specific to one state. It isn't over a policy that has been in existence for years, tried in courtrooms throughout America, and is found in 31 states. I always get a kick out of people who are appalled at something that has been around for a long time but they were oblivious for years and now they are suddenly up in arms. Kony anyone?

You took a stance. More power to you and I honestly applaud your actions. I think the OP'er stand is totally different than yours but if she wants to skip WDW, I say go for it and I have made that clear from the beginning. I think it is silly but that is just me.

My issues are with those who haven't taken a stance at all but have chosen to make this thread about the scary USA, Orlando, or Detroit. They breath a sigh of relief when they return home but they keep coming back! Again, what is their stance exactly? Where is their line in the sand? Bad mouth the USA, put on rose colored glasses while you are in Orlando, rip Detroit up and down, but, hey, keep on visiting?????

To quote you:
Sorry, I am a firm believer nothing effects change quicker than saying "I'm not spending my money there".

I couldn't agree with you more but the last few USA and Orlando bashers haven't done that. Instead, they have blasted two places they continue to visit. I'm sorry, but I take exception to that.

Despite what we would like to think, Orlando has never been a "happy place". It is a dangerous place with dangerous people. As long as we stick near the theme parks away from the thugs and gangbangers and keep our eyes open, we're probably OK. I think the difference with the Conceal Carry and the SYG law is that we now realize that people who are NOT thugs or gangbangers are suddenly dangerous too. I don't blame people for being afraid. However I, for one, won't let fear of the thugs, gangbangers and conceal carriers rule me when I go to Orlando this week. It *might* stop me from flipping off some jerk who cuts me off .

Yes, and make sure you don't make eye contact with anyone in, say, Maitland or Winter Springs. Stick close to the parks, walk quickly and with purpose, and don't speak to anyone.

I'll be sure to let my son ~ who lives in *gasp* Orlando ~ know that he is considered a thug and a gangbanger. He'll get a kick out of that :rotfl:
