Conservative Thread: We cannot do everything at once, but we can do something at once

Most people at that time attended church but not all worshipped. It was the social thing to do, a great meeting place and focal point.
If you take a look at "Religion and the Founding Fathers" at http://earlyamericanhistory.net/founding_fathers.htm you can see that some of them only paid lip service to the religious standards of their day by attending church but not taking communion or being confirmed.

I think that assertion is too generalized. I've read up on Jefferson and religion, and and it appears that the bulk of his "Deist" utterances were from the period late in his life. I don't think it's fair to assert that he held those thoughts throughout his life and that they weren't some sort of late-in-life re-evaluation of his beliefs. I understand that culturally it would have been expected of him to go trough the motions at least of going to church, but it also appears that he also went above and beyond at times. For example, as link you cited noted, he called an Episcopal minister to his deathbed. I just don't think Jefferson is so easily pigeon-holed as Deist non-believer or a main-stream Christian. I think he was a bit more complex than that. He basically sent theological "mixed messages" most of his life.

Content to agree to disagree. The problem with historical nuances is that they are too far back to gauge at all accurately.

Talking about problems, just to avoid any unpleasantness, this is the Conservative thread, isn't it? It is not the Conservative Christian thread or the American Conservative Christian thread, is it?
As an Englishman who is a staunch Conservative, very pro America and a dedicated atheist I feel quite at home here except for the overtly "God is good" stuff which I can quickly jump over. However, I am extremely interested in religion from its historical and sociological perspectives so I am keen to get involved with discussions on the origins of religion. I will leave the touchy-feely stuff to those who get something out of it.

For what it's worth, I'm not big on discussing religion on-line either (I refuse to debate on the topic), but I too don't mind an intellectual query into the role of religion in society. In the case of our Founding Fathers, I think they're a bit of an ink-blot test... you see what you want to see. I don't think they, as a group, were either a bunch of Christian zealots nor were they Deist/Unitarian/atheists who at most thought there might some unknown, un-named, "higher power" out there somewhere.

Don't sweat it... the conversations ebb and flow. The next thing you know we'll be swapping chicken salad recipes!

Nobody appointed me chief of the thread, but as far as I'm concerned you are more than welcome here. This is indeed a thread for conservatives (and those who love them :goodvibes ). Conservatives come in all different stripes and I am perfectly fine with that.
When religion does overlap with some of the political discussion here I try to be senstive to the fact that not all are of the same faith as me -or any faith for that matter. Obviously faith is a big part of who I am and it will be an unapologetic part of my posts from time to time. I just hope I am not too blundering in my discussion of it.

Ew, chicken salad? Yuck.
Sorry... it was a reference to the Woody Allen film "What's Up Tiger Lily?" I'm a ham salad guy myself!

Update: Man, I blew that... It was egg salad that Japanese secret agent Phil Moscowitz was searching for in the film!!!

GASP! MR Man is an Aggie?:scared1:

Yep, but only graduate school though (so, the obligatory Aggie jokes only half-apply).

Undergrad was at LMU (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München)- US Army.....long story.....

Hope things have been well with you (I hear Army food has dramatically improved over the years).

:)

That appears to be a myth. It arises out of a "condensed" version of the New Testament that Jefferson wrote for use in trying to convert Native Americans to Christianity. However, the accusation that he left out whole categories of texts (miracles, etc.) appears to be mistaken. Again, Jefferson isn't acting like someone hostile to religion.

Update: It appears to be disputed whether or not Jefferson's work was for converting Native Americans or not. Those that dispute the notion contend that the work was an effort to summarize the philosophies of Jesus. If that were the case, then it would make sense to leave out miracles and such, as they'd be "out of scope" for the topic.

At worst, Jefferson didn't believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible and had some problems with some of the things being taught by the clergy of his day. Which would probably put him in the same category as most people sitting in the pews in most organized churches across the US.

Interesting stuff. I have generally considered Thomas Jefferson to be a fine product of the Age of Reason and thus a Deist, but have to admit that I haven't thought about it much.

So, I was just wandering around the mall (while I should have been studying for finals, lol) and saw someone wearing a t-shirt that set my gag reflex off rather badly. It had a picture of The One on it, with the Presidential Seal framing him like a halo. Has anyone else seen this monstrosity?

I received this in my email today:

A few good men & one good old man!

As I came out of the supermarket that sunny day, pushing my cart of
groceries towards my car, I saw an old man with the hood of his car up and a lady sitting inside the car, with the door open

The old man was looking at the engine. I put my groceries away in my car and continued to watch the old gentleman from about twenty five feet away.

I saw a young man in his early twenties with a grocery bag in his arm,
walking towards the old man. The old gentleman saw him coming too and took a few steps towards him. I saw the old gentleman point to his open hood and say something.

The young man put his grocery bag into what looked like a brand new
Cadillac Escalade and then turn back to the old man and I heard him yell at the old gentleman saying, "You shouldn't even be allowed to drive a car at your age." And then with a wave of his hand, he got in his car and peeled rubber out of the parking lot.

I saw the old gentleman pull out his handkerchief and mop his brow as he went back to his car and again looked at the engine. He then went to his wife and spoke with her and appeared to tell her it would be okay. I had seen enough and I approached the old man. He saw me coming and stood straight and as I got near him I said, "Looks like you're having a problem."

He smiled sheepishly and quietly nodded his head. I looked under the hood myself and knew that whatever the problem was, it was beyond me. Looking around I saw a gas station up the road and told the old man that I would be right back. I drove to the station and went inside and saw three attendants working on cars. I approached one of them and related the problem the old man had with his car and offered to pay them if they could follow me back down and help him.

The old man had pushed the heavy car under the shade of a tree and appeared to be comforting his wife. When he saw us he straightened up and thanked me for my help. As the mechanics diagnosed the problem (overheated engine) I spoke with the old gentleman.

When I shook hands with him earlier he had noticed my Marine Corps ring and had commented about it, telling me that he had been a Marine too. I nodded and asked the usual question, "What outfit did you serve with?"

He had mentioned that he served with the first Marine Division at Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal . He had hit all the big ones and retired from the Corps after the war was over. As we talked we heard the car engine come on and saw the mechanics lower the hood. They came over to us as the old man reached for his wallet, but was stopped by me and I told him I would just put the bill on my AAA card.

He still reached for the wallet and handed me a card that I assumed had his name and address on it and I stuck it in my pocket. We all shook hands all round again and I said my goodbye's to his wife.

I then told the two mechanics that I would follow them back up to the
station. Once at the station I told them that they had interrupted their own jobs to come along with me and help the old man. I said I wanted to pay for the help, but they refused to charge me. One of them pulled out a card from his pocket looking exactly like the card the old man had given to me. Both of the men told me then, that they were Marine Corps Reserves. Once again we shook hands all around and as I was leaving, one of them told me I should look at the card the old man had given to me. I said I would and drove off.

For some reason I had gone about two blocks when I pulled over and took the card out of my pocket and looked at it for a long, long time. The name of the old gentleman was on the card in golden leaf and under his name........ "Congressional Medal of Honor Society."

I sat there motionless looking at the card and reading it over and over. I looked up from the card and smiled to no one but myself and marveled that on this day, four Marines had all come together, because one of us needed help. He was an old man all right, but it felt good to have stood next to greatness and courage and an honor to have been in his presence.

" Remember, old men like him gave you FREEDOM for America "

America is not at war.

The U.S. Military is at war.

America is at the Mall.

If you don't stand behind our troops,

PLEASE feel free to stand in front of them!

God Bless America , our Veterans and Troops.
That is awesome! Thanks for sharing.

Teresa>> the JL needs you!

Everyone... NO, I didn't get an interview, job offer, job... but I did get my acceptance letter to U of Michigan's MA/ED program! I have 15 credits already towards my MA, but with another University. I don't think any of it will transfer, but at least I'll be doing something! I'm going for the Sp Ed MA/cognitive impairment endorsement.
That is great! I'm thinking of going into Special Ed, myself.

Zip! All kidding aside, I'm with Breezy on this one -

and, speaking of Breezy, I've had a hankering for a chocolate-minty dessert ever since she posted all those peppermint bark pictures. So I found a chocolate-minty dessert --

The base calls for chocolate syrup - I thought I had enough but I didn't. Determined not to go to the store, I looked up a substitution for the syrup - a concoction made up of cocoa, water, and sugar that you stir stir stir until it bubbles then you let it cool then you add vanilla [goodness, it would have been faster to go to the store!].

Anyway, so after all that, I found out that I didn't have mint extract I needed for the second layer - so I have to go to the store anyway! Argh!!!! Boy these better be good.
Yum! I love choco/mint.:goodvibes

No need to gag... Remember, the higher he's put up on a pedestal... the harder the fall will be when reality finally sets in. His "confident smile and kind eyes" won't be quite as inspirational then.

Well in my professional opinion they're whackadoodle :lmao:

But if you must have details, here ya go...

Upon reading the above link, I must defer to your professional opinion. They do indeed seem to be a few fries short of a happy meal. ::yes::

Don't sweat it... the conversations ebb and flow. The next thing you know we'll be swapping chicken salad recipes!

:rotfl: Isn't that the truth!

Ew, chicken salad? Yuck.

 I can see you've never tried MY chicken salad :rolleyes1 ;) LOL!

Or the ladies will start talking underwear again. Major skippage for me. :scared:

Well, with the way the conversation's turned - the discussion should certainly proceed to "holy" underwear next popcorn:: .

Oh, goody, another "Christians are crazy" thread just popped up on the CB. Can't you just feel the seasonal love?

::yes:: I can, it's a shame they can't. It's a wonderful feeling. :goodvibes

Have y'all noticed that the "petition against nativity" thread is still going? I thought that horse was dead sometime yesterday, but it still floats to the top of the page. I haven't clicked on it today so maybe they're talking about other stuff. popcorn::

I'm not sure of the thread you're talking about, but if I'm catching the nuance of some threads lately it's not that all Christians are crazy here, just the ones who are sufficiently intelligent and enlightened. :snooty:

Nothing more boring that catfights at a family reunion. :sad2:

Like Esther!!!

And I don't think it is an accident that we [the DIS'ers on the con thread] have found each other...:thumbsup2

ITA!
