We got connecting rooms at DLH last June, no problem. If there are children in your party they usually try extra hard to get you connected rooms. We just booked 2 connecting rooms at the GCH for August and the CM said she was going to put a note on our res that a child would be in one of those rooms, so I'm thinking they give families with children priority for connecting rooms.
As far as the suites go, the CM told us about the 2 bedroom suite option which would have been an additional $300 per night over the garden view rate for 2 connecting rooms. It would be nice to have a living room, and I'm sure a better view, but for 6 nights the extra cost would have been $1800 and 2 standard rooms for 4 people was plenty of room last June at the DLH!!!
The 2 adjoining rooms at the DLH kinda felt like a "suite" - we all hung out in one room while the DW was taking a shower in the other. But, we were able to shut the door between the 2 rooms at night so we didn't have to hear the grandmas snoring!
