Conflicting reports of Swine flu reported at DisneyWorld

we are headed there on friday. I'm not really worried about all this. there are always flu's and other things to watch out for. This doesn't seem to be much different from all the info I've read. Besides washing hands and taking precautions, there's nothing more anyone can do... so IMHO... I'd rather be at Disney and take precautions, then at home and take precautions.

Same here, we're there in 3 days and I'm so excited. They've been saying on the news to just use your common sense - just the usual covering your mouth and nose if you cough/sneeze, wash hands etc...

Right now, I'm looking for a specific article. The one I read told the story of several of the victims in Mexico..all of them were young healthy individuals in their 30's. No issues with asthma etc. These people were on breathing tubes/ventilators.

And while there may have been some cases in Mexico that ended up on ventilators, the fact remains that we have not seen that in the USA. Something is different between what is going on in Mexico, as opposed to the rest of the world.

It could be that their lungs have been compromised by the air pollution in Mexico City (something they would never know, and appear "healthy"), or there could be so many other factors involved. I really don't see the need to scare people in the USA with things that haven't occurred here.

Certainly knowledge is power, but I really think we should stick to the facts and information provided by the CDC and the WHO, which is to take precautions, but don't panic or be alarmed. We will see deaths from this flu, as with any flu, but we shouldn't lose our heads over it.

I don't know if it's been posted yet or not, but the first death in the US from Swine Flu has been confirmed. It was a 23 month old in Texas. :(

Most people aren't so important that the company can't run without them, but MANY people need their jobs to survive and cannot violate workplace absentee policies, particularly in this economy. I think that's a big problem that may get some well-deserved attention right now - I've known a lot of people who worked in jobs where they risk being fired if they called in sick and a lot of school districts that fail kids for attendance regardless of performance. Policies like that force people to go into work or send their kids to school sick, because the consequences are more severe than the discomfort of going to work with cold or flu symptoms.

Thank you. As an RN I am allowed 3 Sick days Per rolling calendar year. Then Disciplinary action.I don't have the luxury to call off for every sniffle, and people shouldn't presume I can simply find another job either.Every hospital,Dr office, and home health company in my area is on a strict hiring freeze thanks to the economy.Seriously , I see way too many people panicking and getting hysterical ,which is not helping the matter. Our Ed has seen record pts in the past 24 hrs.All paranoid and scared, none even had Flu-like symptoms.Mostly seasonal allergies and colds. This is a HUGE problem because our resources, time, and attention are diverted elsewhere should an actual case of Swine Flu come in.

I'll be heading to Orlando this afternoon. I'm not worried.

I'll just do my normal hand washing and keeping my hands away from my face and stay away from coughing, hacking folks which is what I always do.

Very sad, but not unexpected. I am however surprised at the age. Perhaps this flu is mutating into something more similar to what we're used to seeing, and it will be the young, elderly, and immuno-compromised who are going to be at risk.

Worth keeping and eye on.

Totally sad , but totally expected. Many more will die.Be Cautious just don't be irresponsible or incite panic.

I think this is the right attitude. It's what I'm planning on doing. :thumbsup2

Don't know how FL is handling their cases, but here in "Houston" we just had a confirmed death of a baby from swine flu.On the news they said they were not releasing where in "Houston" the child/family was staying (but did say they just traveled here from Mexico) or what hospital the child was at-all that was being released was it being a confirmed death.
IMO I am thinking it is something you need to just take care of yourself and inform your kids on why it's important to wash their hands, but then again for places where you may have lots of illegals and people traveling to and from Mexico you will probably find higher concentration of the sickness. I would think it's just a matter of time for it to happen at WDW. Just try your best to stay clean and wipe down your rooms yourself, but know you take a chance of getting any sickness while eating out b/c you are relying on someone else taking care of themselves.

The cases of swine flu that have been critical have had patients ending up on ventilators..me personally, I'd rather have an idea of the worst case scenario. Hiding and trying to sprinkle pixie dust on it doesn't really do much good. This virus does attack lung tissue, and basically, the effect is you suffocate. This doesn't seem to be happening in the US(yet) but it may.

I think the CDC, and other groups should make it very clear what this can entail. Maybe then, it will be taken seriously. This could go away soon or it could be bad news..people need the facts.

OH MY GOD!! Pixie dust won't work? This is much worse than I thought.

DH has to fly to Houston for work tomorrow. I have been so concerned this morning as I heard the first US death was in TX. I was wondering where it was in Texas. Now I see that it is Houston. I have to be honest, I am very concerned about DH being in an airplane and traveling right now, especially there. :guilty:

I just checked the CDC and WHO websites. The total number of cases WORLD wide as of last night was 105. The news meda - as usual - is hyping this way out of proportion.

My interpretation of the "facts" so far:

-there are hundreds (probably thousands) of cases already in the US (based on the fact that Mayor Bloomberg NYC says they're not testing those that are not severely ill...i.e. there's no need to test the 50 or other people that are sick from the first school because it's obvious they have swine flu)...

-the death rate in Mexico is very high 6-10% (which is higher than the 1918 flu, deadliest disease in history along with the plague) but this is probably not the real rate because the people that are being tested are those that are severely ill and most likely to die in the first place

-it doesn't seem to be very severe in the U.S. so far but the CDC expects that to change

-it harms the healthiest (not young, not old) people most readily which may or may not be a concern...1) it could just be that those people are the ones going for testing...or 2) it could mean its similar to the 1918 flu (cytokine storm) which triggers an over reaction of the immune system which ends up harming the person (through pneumonia mainly)

-there may be another less deadly strain of swine flu in the U.S. that does not respond to tamiflu...if the two combined it could be a big problem

-I think these are the key facts so far...I also don't think this flu will be a true pandemic, but I think its important to know that the groundworks are there for it to turn very deadly and wide spread (1) pig, bird, human components from different continents make it so new that humans have no immunity to it, 2) it may cause the same cytokine storm that makes it so deadly among healthy people, 3) it spreads very easily between humans unlike bird flu which has a 50% death rate but was hard to contract and didn't spread between humans)

You know I was wondering. Is it possible that we've had a less severe strain of this in the USA for longer than we think? Honestly we just started testing the substrains of Influenza A because of the deaths in Mexico. Isn't it possible that this past flu season we had regular H1N1, as well as the swine substrain and we just didn't know it? :confused3

Don't know how FL is handling their cases.

Does FL have cases that are confirmed?? I kept checking CDC but it doesn't say that FL is a state that has any cases. Shouldn't CDC be the first to update something like that? Instead of Fox news???

Or perhaps that is what it was all along, but the medical system in Mexico has not moved quickly enough to identify the complicating factor in the deaths there... All the hype about it killing the young and healthy has been speculation. Every article I've read about the cytokine storm theory has said (usually in the last paragraph, after all the alarming talk about "drowing in your own fluids" and the 1918 pandemic) that there's no proof yet that it is what is happening with this strain.
