Conflicting reports of Swine flu reported at DisneyWorld

http://www.emaxhealth.com/1/90/30742/swine-flu-orlando-disney-land-not-confirmed.html

I just found this article - it was posted yesterday and says that they have not confirmed this case to be the swine flu yet... don't know if any thing has changed since. Either way - this makes me nervous.... We leave for Disney in 10 days, and I don't want anything to screw up my trip!~ I'll walk around the MK in a hazmat suit if I have too!

But I think the real key here is to wash your hands often and carry around a bottle of hand sanitizer with you and sanitize your hands often - like after each ride!

Stay healthy! :)

And while there may have been some cases in Mexico that ended up on ventilators, the fact remains that we have not seen that in the USA. Something is different between what is going on in Mexico, as opposed to the rest of the world.

It could be that their lungs have been compromised by the air pollution in Mexico City (something they would never know, and appear "healthy"), or there could be so many other factors involved. I really don't see the need to scare people in the USA with things that haven't occurred here.

Certainly knowledge is power, but I really think we should stick to the facts and information provided by the CDC and the WHO, which is to take precautions, but don't panic or be alarmed. We will see deaths from this flu, as with any flu, but we shouldn't lose our heads over it.
Just because we haven't seen people on ventilators yet here, we may. I posted a link to that article, because someone here wanted to know my reasoning for saying that some of the Mexico victims were on ventilators.

It doesn't affect me either way if you don't think this is a big deal and wish to remain in the dark. There are many who want to know the facts..I'm a big girl, I don't scare easily. What person here is losing their head? I haven't heard anyone say that they were going to seal themselves in a bubble..couple of people mentioned that they may postpone trips. That is their perogative.

Apparently, according to some, knowledge is a bad thing. It just floors me.:sad2:

Knowledge is not a bad thing, but that knowledge has to be put into perspective. I love knowledge and I don't feel that I'm in the dark on any of this. I understand what each WHO level means, and I know more about this strain of flu than I probably know about the regular strains.

All I was saying was that yes there were Mexicans placed on ventilators, but until that starts happening in the USA, I don't think we can say because "A" happened there, "A" WILL happen here.

Shepard Smith on Foxnews just said based on the issues in Washington DC right now he wondered if this swine flu stuff might be a bit of a deflection or "something to talk about." I would hope that isn't the case but who knows.

Eh, I tend to avoid Fox news. Talk about sensationalism..

Some levity is occasionally needed to break up discussions on heavy topics to help swallow them in smaller doses...

Am I the only one who keeps hearing Inspector Clouseau in their heads every time they mention the name of this flu strain?

This is my feeling too...I have worked WAYYYY too hard on this trip to call it off now.:headache:

And- No I do not have a false sense of security. I work in a bank and handle money that has been who knows where every day. I also shake hands with people who have been who knows where. Germs are everywhere. You just can't run and hide from them.

I agree..but I never said that it would. The main point is that this flu has the POTENTIAL to cause severe respiratory illness. So if someone is prone to these problems, maybe they could take extra precautions. That's it..I fail to understand how the media reporting fact, (ie some patients were on ventilators) is sensationalizing.

You've never seen my local anchors. :)
They may be reporting facts, but, as my mother always said, "It's not what you say, it's how you say it." They won't just say people on ventilators, they will spin it in the most horrifying, "it will be on your doorstep tomorrow," kind of way.

Media can sensationalize in more ways than using words. Even if the words they use are completely accurate and true, they way they are said, with emphasis on certain words and dramatic pauses in the right spots, can make it much more attention-grabbing and sensationalist.

And that's not even getting into the special effects they love to use (super-dramatic music, as the big full-screen title letters appear on screen in bold vivid reds and blacks - "SWINE FLU SCARE!", appearing in three dimensional, cracked stone letters casting shadows, with a background montage of photos of folks in facemasks, ambulances, people crying, etc. The letters of course will swoop in with big, heavy-sounding stone noises, swoosh sounds, jail-door-slamming crescendos, wind...and even more dramatic music). Media. Entertainment. Where's the line? I don't know!

That is unfortunate..we have some like that around here. There is one station that I'll watch, because they are very objective about the news. The other 2..one step up from tabloid. I get most of my news from the newspaper and certain websites, so I may have missed some of the more "Geraldo Rivera" style reports..

Well I returned from Disney this past Sunday the 26th.

I was there for 9 days and took 2 trips to the Orlando airport.

While waiting in some lines, I noticed kids & adults too, were coughing and sneezing everywhere without covering their mouths or anything. :confused3

Yesterday I was not feeling well at work. Everybody freaked out and told me to go to the doctor and stay home.:scared:

The doctor says I just have a regular cold that turned into a sinus infection. He put me on heavy duty antibiotics and gave me some cough syrup with codeine. He is having me stay home for a few days.

My advice to those going to Disney is:

After you wash your hands, keep a paper towel in your hand when you go to open that germ infested door handle to leave the restroom.

My doctor thinks the media is blowing this all out of proprtion and I hope he is right!

Fly :hippie:

My Doctor agrees with your's. I have actually had to talk with our pediatirician about my kids today and also had a check up at my family dr today and neither of them seemed the least concerned that we would be traveling. Makes me wonder...

I'm in Orlando now and will be going to Epcot on Friday. So far, we went to MK on Sunday and although I felt rundown and slightly off. This turned out to be just plain tiredness from running around. We've given ourselves a few days of rest (pre-planned) as we're staying in a pool home just to experience a relaxing pace during our visits to the parks.

Normally, I tend to use the same precautions i.e. washing my hands frequently and holding the door handles with paper towels and disposing afterwards and using sanitizing wipes. People can disagree, but I use my drivers license rather than putting my finger on the scanner when entering the park. The castmember complies with no problem. Some people just don't wash their hands period. I also noticed some people don't cover their face when sneezing or coughing. I just try to walk away from their airspace.

Hopefully, this will all work out and people can enjoy their hard earned vacations.
