Conflicting reports of Swine flu reported at DisneyWorld

We leave on Friday too. What to do? I worry because DD16 has Diabetes.

All I can say is that with the number of people traveling to WDW, there are ALWAYS going to be sick people there and probably with a multitude of diseases. To me, the swine flu is no different than the regular flu, which is still completely nasty. I would say take the same precautions you would take being in a place like that during flu season. I'm not going to cancel our trip. We were there during a norowalk virus breakout and just tried to be extra careful, which is hard with a small one that sticks their hands in their mouth. Until today, I was more worried about catching swine flu on the plane than at WDW itself.

Anyone know how they test you? Is it a bloodtest? I had the misfortune of being in a room where a woman had her sinuses swabbed. The "wonderful" nurse said "Be still, I don't want to punture your brain!" All the while, the poor woman was screaming and crying.

Do you know what bothers me about this...and I may be crazy...but 50 confirmed cases of anything in a population of around 400,000,000 just doesn't seem worrisome to me. Call me when it gets to a million, then I will be slightly more concerned, but not much.

Have you ever wondered how many people get cold symptoms (yet another virus) in the course of a single day?

When you have 24 hour a day news coverage, you have to talk about something, and this is as good a topic as Michelle Obama's choice of clothing. It also appeals to our need for drama and fear.

I remember the first Swine Flu scare when everyone was herded off to get a vaccination by Gerald Ford. Much ado about nothing.

Great point. I think taking a break from the news is a good thing sometimes.

Iam 23 yrs old never have been to disneyworld, grew up in a not to good home so disneyworld was out of the question.we are going on our 1st trip in may Like I told my wife there is NO FLIPPING WAY YOUR KEEPING ME FROM DISNEYWORLD!!!!!!!!I will wear a space suit if I have to I WILL RIDE SPLASH MOUNTAIN DAM IT!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe if everybody panics the crowds will be back down to 4 & 5's instead of 8 & 9's! I doubt UG considers swine flu in the crowd predictions, though.

This is what my DH said when I told him. We will go and not worry about it honestly. Right now they are reporting 64 confirmed cases. I am thinking that if I am going to worry about anything bed bugs seem more likely to happen. Just for the record, I am not worried about the bed bugs either.

As others have said, no need to panic. Just make sure you wash your hands frequently, especially after holding handrails and using the rest room. Don't touch your nose, mouth, and eyes. Antibacterial handgel is a good idea, too.

One thing. Bring your own Purell. When I was there in December, I got a cold, and wanted to buy Purell, but couldn't find it anywhere on Disney property. They only had antibacterial handwipes in packs of 5 I believe. So, unless they started stocking it since December, you may only be able to get the handwipes on Disney property.

I'm heading down soon, and one case that has not been confirmed by the CDC is not going to keep me away. I'm just going to be more vigilant about washing my hands and using antibacterial hand gel.

Already a post with 5 or 6 pages on this subject and No cases of Swine Flu has been confirmed in Florida. WFTV had a big MAY HAVE confirmed in front of their story at noon. CDC says none confirmed.

Here's the problem - I just heard a blurb on the news commercial, "as the deadly swine flu sweeps across....." Now why do they do that? Like PPs have said, the "regular" flu can be deadly too, and more than 64 people die from that every year. This is the flu!!!! Take care of yourself and you'll be fine! Stupid news.

I am assuming it is a blood test. The nasal Swab you heard is absolutely nothing. We swab nasal passages to routinely to monitor MRSA.It is a qtip gently swiped slightly in side the nostril. The RN should have explained it better to that pt.

Okay people, its the flu. If you are relatively healthy and you follow standard precautions (i.e.; washing hands often, using hand sanitizer, etc) you most likely will not get it. This is the US and we have tourists and they sometimes bring in new strains of stuff we don't normally get. The reasons that people die from the flu in third world countries is that they don't have the sanitation we do here. Certainly take precautions but don't panic. Just go and have a good time.

Great post, nurse.darcy :)

There is supposedly going to be a Florida Hospital Press Conference soon that can be seen at wftv.com

(It won't let me post the link)

so they don't go up into the actual sinus cavity?

Because the Media gets higher ratings the longer people tune in and buy all the nonsense. Seriously they beat the economy and recession fears deader than dead. This is the next huge ratings sensationalist crap to get attention and boost ratings.I am not saying there aren't realistic concerns, but simply saying the "Flu is popping up across the nation "doesn't quite have the same ring to it

Not unless they are doing something else. But we swab every new pts nasal passge for MRSA at admission and 7 days later if they are still in the hospital. It doesn't hurt in the slightest, and I have had pts carry on like that too.

Just letting everyone know in case it hasn't been mentioned that the Orlando media seems to be retracting the story of a confirmed case of Swine Flu in the area.

These are two different television stations...WFTV (ABC) was reporting a confirmed case but WKMG (CBS) and other media outlets have NOT confirmed any swine flu cases.
