Conflicting reports of Swine flu reported at DisneyWorld

I would bring some extra hand sanitizer along, I would use it after bathroom visits etc..in places where you can come in contact with a lot of germs!

I would be somewhat concerned if I were traveling in the next couple weeks. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. From what I've been reading, it sounds like it could become huge or fade away. There's no way to be sure at this point, but there are a few scary facts about this one. I read that this virus contains DNA from swine on 3 continents. This is new.

I'm not panicking yet, but I am keeping an eye on it. I am traveling to WDW the end of June. Hopefully this will have blown over by then.

Here is the article from WFTV:

Swine Flu Case Confirmed In Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Eyewitness News has learned of Orlando's first confirmed case of swine flu. According to the chief medical officer for Adventist Health System, Loran Hauck, the case was diagnosed Tuesday morning.

"A case was diagnosed here in Orlando today on a tourist from Mexico who came to Disney attractions two days ago to visit," Hauck wrote in an email obtained by Eyewitness News.

No further details have been released, but Eyewitness News is working to learn specifically what days the tourist was at the parks and which park the tourist went to.

Details about the tourist, beyond being from Mexico, have not been released.

I'm not too concerned really. Seems we always get a cold or something after returning from WDW - this time though, it would just make us more aware and we'd head to the doctor instead of treating at home. I think that's the biggest difference between this strain, and the "ordinary" flu. Get checked out if you have flu-like symptoms and you'll be fine. :goodvibes

We are going to be there on the 18th unless it gets out of control.
I have to wonder about something, everyone on this board was talking about a flu going around at Disney a few weeks ago? And I have noticed people at my work that had a flu with these systoms a couple of weeks ago. I am not a medical person, but I wonder if it started a while back and they are just now testing for it?

We are headed there in 12 days. Now I am starting to worry!
I cannot count how many times people have sneezed or coughed around us at WDW and not covered their mouth and nose!:scared1:
Hopefully we won't have to wear masks all week because that would make for not so great photopass opportunities unless the characters wear them as well.;)

Ugh, not good. Hopefully it will just be this isolated incident. We're scheduled to arrive Friday.

Honestly I am so sick of hearing about this already. I work in health care and every flipping patient is calling freaking out that their kids have swine flu. Seriously, just take your multivitamin, wash your hands good, make sure you stay away from people who are hacking all over the place and not covering their mouths. Common sense, its just using what we call standard precautions.

On the good side, at least Mickey is a mouse and not a pig or there could be REAL problems at WDW :lmao:

Seems way out of proportion here. No newspapers and even Fox News local station this morning was showing no Swine Flu in Florida when they showed the map of states having flu.

As for the local ABC affiliate, this is the station that tends to over react to everything. If a hurricane is 1000 miles out in the ocean it is in a direct root to come over Orlando. If there is a thunderstorm, it becomes a tornado warning.

Looked at all the local papers which have breaking news updates all day long and not one is reporting that there is a case in Florida.

That said it probably will get here eventually since people come to Orlando from everywhere.

Report this morning was talking about how how confirmed cases in US were less intense than those in Mexico.

As usual the media is sending people into panic mode. I'm really hoping it's just going to fade away as some of the other things (SARS, Bird Flu).

The swine flu is just another strain of flu that travels fast... as long as you're healthy, you'll be fine. There's no reason to panic!

According to my great-aunt who works with the CDC.

And hey, while in Disney I'd rather have swine flu than norovirus!!! :scared1:

Tell me about it!:scared1: We got norovirus on our last night in orlando in 2007 and all I can say is...one bathroom with two adult and one child sick with the norovirus for 5 days(yes...5 whole days of never ending HELL!)...let's just say we added an extra bathroom to our home after that! :rotfl2:

It is really not surprising, WDW is a huge tourist Mecca, folks from all over the world travel there.

For those traveling soon, just be careful. Make sure to wash hands thouroughly and maybe now is not the best time to "fill in all available space" in other words keep a wider distance than usual from others. Hand sanitizer is always a good idea.

lets just hope that this does not cause a huge panic where anyone with a stuffy nose freaks out and runs to thier local er.

My local hospital (and employer) has seen an increase in people coming to the ED with the sniffles in the last 24 hrs.I am in PA.None are flu like symptoms either .Just colds and allergies.People are panicking. I certainly would not want to be an RN in Orlando right now.Once the News media plays up the WDW angle those EDs are going to be hopping

We also leave on Friday. We have trip insurance, so I can cancel without much penalty, but I still want to go. I don't want to put anyone in my family in harm's way though. I have no idea what we should do.
