Conflicting reports of Swine flu reported at DisneyWorld

The swine flu is just another strain of flu that travels fast... as long as you're healthy, you'll be fine. There's no reason to panic!

According to my great-aunt who works with the CDC.

And hey, while in Disney I'd rather have swine flu than norovirus!!! :scared1:

Exactly. The "regular" flu kills people as well. This one just happens to have a catchy name and a lot of media momentum.

I am leaving tomorrow morning! It is supposedly a strain of influenza. If so, washing your hands, using antibacterial gel, not touching your mouth, nose, eyes, or face should help.
My kids had the norovirius when we were ther in December.

Maybe if everybody panics the crowds will be back down to 4 & 5's instead of 8 & 9's! I doubt UG considers swine flu in the crowd predictions, though.

We're going regardless of what they find. We'll just take the additional precautions that CDC recommends.

Same here.

I called work this morning...I've been on vacation for a week, got 2 more to go :cool1:...Anyway, they said people are really freaking out. Not one case report around here, but you wouldn't know that by the news. How many people have died from other less "newsworthy" reasons? I think the news organizations are WAY too sensationalized. I plan to take extra precautions...Vitamin Supplements, lotsa water, and handwashing. No masks...don't do squat. i also plan to have a GREAT time.

I am also thinking there will be less CROWDS! Remember just last week people were all worried about park closings due to crowds? tourguide having parks at 8 and 9. Still think they will be? I think locals may just reconsider and go a different date. I have planned this for a year, I had to put my time off request in NOVEMBER! Nothing other then a full blown epidemic will keep me home. Actually, I am more likely to be exposed at work then WDW.

Oh great. My DH, who is a scientist, is a bit freaked out by this whole swine flu thing and traveling to WDW. I've been telling him we are safer in Orlando than here because there are cases much closer to where we live, than have shown up in Orlando yet. All I can do is hope he doesn't see this, but I'm sure it will be all over the National news by the end of the day. Let's hope this is an isolated case and this person didn't start a spread at WDW.

We also leave on Friday. We have trip insurance, so I can cancel without much penalty, but I still want to go. I don't want to put anyone in my family in harm's way though. I have no idea what we should do.

I'm in the same positition. I understand the hand washing and hand sanitizer, but it's kind of hard with a teething 1 year old who always puts her hands in her mouth. :confused3

We leave on Friday too. What to do? I worry because DD16 has Diabetes.

Do you know what bothers me about this...and I may be crazy...but 50 confirmed cases of anything in a population of around 400,000,000 just doesn't seem worrisome to me. Call me when it gets to a million, then I will be slightly more concerned, but not much.

Have you ever wondered how many people get cold symptoms (yet another virus) in the course of a single day?

When you have 24 hour a day news coverage, you have to talk about something, and this is as good a topic as Michelle Obama's choice of clothing. It also appeals to our need for drama and fear.

I remember the first Swine Flu scare when everyone was herded off to get a vaccination by Gerald Ford. Much ado about nothing.

On the noon news WFTV local ABC affiliate mentioned as source earlier posts has said NO confirmed cases of Swine Flu in Central Florida!

At least they have retracted or put the words MAY HAVE back into the reports. They are pretty much ambulance chasers so tend to not watch this station.

Honestly I am so sick of hearing about this already. I work in health care and every flipping patient is calling freaking out that their kids have swine flu. Seriously, just take your multivitamin, wash your hands good, make sure you stay away from people who are hacking all over the place and not covering their mouths. Common sense, its just using what we call standard precautions.

On the good side, at least Mickey is a mouse and not a pig or there could be REAL problems at WDW :lmao:

Same here. Everyone at work is concerned about it.
My concern is not for Mickey as much as it is for poor PIGLET! ;)

yesterday news reported cases in omaha ne,Turned out people had the flu and reports came back negative. This is why CDC says if its not on the site dont believe it they will update it to make sure theres no rumors like this one going around.

I do wonder if we'll see more people wearing masks and gloves with all this panic.

Just a side note...masks won't help a thing...nor will gloves in regards to this particular virus...it's trasmitted through the air...and the only thing you can do to be 100% certain yiou won;t catch it is to get one of those Mopp-3 enviromental hazard suits.

Good Hygene is your bet bet...outside of that...it's a crap shoot.

Okay people, its the flu. If you are relatively healthy and you follow standard precautions (i.e.; washing hands often, using hand sanitizer, etc) you most likely will not get it. This is the US and we have tourists and they sometimes bring in new strains of stuff we don't normally get. The reasons that people die from the flu in third world countries is that they don't have the sanitation we do here. Certainly take precautions but don't panic. Just go and have a good time.

They shut down an elementary school in Richardson, TX for the entire week because 1 child was confirmed and 2 thought to have Swine Flu. Doesn't this seem a bit overreactive?

9 days until we arrive.

I'm glad we'll be over our colds before we arrive.

On the plus side, this is going to keep the crowds down quite a bit. We were expecting it to be packed with locals for mother's day. I'm guessing most locals will stay away.
