Confirmed New Security measures coming to Disney Parks

From the pictures it seems that there is only one metal detector on each bag check side. It would appear that not everyone will go through the metal detectors then.
Correct. That may change tho as this is only the first day.

It's weird how everyone just did this randomly then. SeaWorld especially.

Rumor has it that this was based on US gov't "strong suggestion" to the theme park operators. If it was suggested they do this through the busy holiday season, marathon weekend is a reasonable end date for WDW.

But, yeah, who knows?

We shall see. I will be there marathon weekend.

Ha! Are pocketknives outlawed at WDW? I've had one in my pocket every time I've been there - as I carry one everywhere I go. I suppose now the rent-a-cops will make me hand it over.

They are and always have been.

...and I've never carried my weapon into WDW, but I do carry most places. My pistol is well concealed, and you wouldn't know I had it if I was standing next to you - or even hugged up to you. I guarantee you that there have always been people carrying at WDW, every day.

You and me both, brother.

My two cents: I don't understand the argument that there shouldn't be increased security measures because it doesn't do anything to protect the people who are lined up to go through security. Basically that argument is saying since we can't protect from every scenario, we shouldn't try at all. For some reason that logic hasn't dawned on security experts who operate airport security screening, stadiums, military bases, border crossings etc.

I would hope that these increased security measures are part of a broader security program. By taking 30 seconds to screen each individual, that would hypothetically give them time to get everyone's faces on camera. If I were running a security program I would also have security personnel, hopefully well trained, monitoring the cameras to look for suspicious behavior, body language etc. I have no info to suggest this to be the case at WDW, but one would hope that there is more going on behind the scenes than the ordinary person would notice.

No, that isn't the argument. The argument is that these specific security measures don't actually work for any scenario. More visible security is not the same thing as increased security. It's just theater.

Airport screening has been panned for a decade, they do it so it looks like they are doing something. Secured military bases actually maintain a perimeter.

The K9 units are useful if they are trained to sniff out bombs, the metal detectors are pointless.

It is nothing but feel good security.

How many people are lined up in the mornings for rope drop? Couldn't someone walk up with a gun and kill hundreds who have passed through the increased security from outside the increased security?

You could probably kill several via stampede by just firing into the air from outside security. Or setting off some firecrackers.

As others have pointed out, a lot of this is for show. Sadly, if someone wants to harm others at Disney, where there is a will, there's a way.....no matter if you have metal detectors or not. Mostly, I'm curious how this is going to affect the long lines to enter the parks. Those lines can be pretty congested without metal detectors. Parents bring in so much stuff, this just seems like it will create a big mess at the entrance.

I would agree if this was all that Disney was doing but you better believe they stepped up the security theater in addition to stepping up things regular guests will never see unless it is needed. They were asked by the government to do something and so this time around they took a visual approach as well as a background.

Just because something may happen before the security check doesn't mean we shouldn't have security checks.

I am curious if advocates of these measures are also willing to get frequent colonoscopies, even if they don't have risk factors, like age, previous diagnosis, or family history. If the procedure isn't necessary, most of us wouldn't do it. I personally avoid those like the plague. A lot of these measures could very well be about on par for me and probably not result in anything. Actually, this is starting to sound exactly like my colonoscopies:(

I think colonoscopies are a little different then walking through a metal detector.

Either your colonoscopies are much less invasive than mine, or you're used to an entirely different type of metal detector than I am.

Metal detectors and screening procedures may not deter the more determined actors, but they certainly deter some of the less committed actors. And they will probably routinely find contraband and prevent it from entering the parks. They certainly don't make the parks less safe.

Would you then be okay with just doing away with airport screenings? Just let anyone buy a ticket and walk on a plane unchecked?

It's not just walking through a metal detector, and that's probably just going to be the beginning. Hopefully not though. Maybe it will stay at just random metal detector scans:rolleyes1
