Confirmed New Security measures coming to Disney Parks

Orlando Sentinel just posted that the metal detectors are installed today at Disney, Universal and Sea World with:
- WDW will not say how long they will be in place
- Universal said they are testing but said long used for special events such as HHN.
- Sea World says part of holidays enhanced security

DL also getting metal detectors.

Hoping this part is not true - "WDW banning 14 and older from wearing costumes - even at Halloween parties."

How are they going to ban costumes? Masks I can see but costumes:confused3 How do they know that I am not a real Jedi:) But seriously, a lot of these new "measures":sad2:

I can confirm the scanners are up, not just at all 4 parks at Disney, but Universal and Sea World as well starting today.

Agree. I am hoping that the those reporting this have not gotten it fully clarified before publishing. Not allowing adults to wear costumes to the Halloween Party ..... might make it pointless. We are all adults, have done two parties a year for a decade .... and I honestly think most guests are adults and a high percentage are in costume. We could probably still wear what we wear, def not something I'd wear anywhere else but technically just highly designed regular clothes.

I have no issue with a ban on costumes for 14 and over on a regular park day. There are plenty of options to express yourself without a costume. Many regular clothes are highly themed.

We'll see if any of this sticks around. With it being done so quickly and with an outside contractor, this is likely only temporary. Whether it will go back to the way it was before or whether they'll install permanent metal detectors and user their own staff later on, who can say?

The Sentinel's article did not have the "even at Halloween parties" wording when the article first published. It was added in later this morning. I would hope that it was confirmed before it was added. My guess is that is was.

And banning toy gun sales from retail locations at WDW?

Who knows? With these security procedure changes suddenly happening at all Orlando theme parks at once, it may be that this is all due to some specific threat.

I don't know about that. The rumblings about this started days ago.

Guess we won't really know until September. As far as newspapers confirming what they print ................

I somewhat agree with this thought process. Disney has probably been mulling over how to proceed with security, particularly given the political atmosphere and greatly increased crowds. All of these things may have discussed around the big table but no firm plans put in to place.

I would not be surprised at all if the Orlando parks received some kind of generic threat that caused them all to add all this in right now. It's always busy at the holidays, clearly something more has come in to play this year. The fact that Disney will have another company clearly present as you enter parks says knee jerk.

Pulling all toy guns from inventory certainly wasn't a plan, as you say it would have been a slow disappearance.

I read this on twitter, she is at parks regularly. At Magic Kingdom - "Definitely upping security measures. Yesterday they had the security dog investigate the entire ferry before we boarded." Even with dogs often in the parks, this does not sound like normal procedure.

Go ahead, paint all concealed carriers with the same, broad paintbrush. BTW, it's lunatic.

I can also tell you, several times as a guest, I forgot to leave my pocket knife in the car.

Ha! Are pocketknives outlawed at WDW? I've had one in my pocket every time I've been there - as I carry one everywhere I go. I suppose now the rent-a-cops will make me hand it over.

...and I've never carried my weapon into WDW, but I do carry most places. My pistol is well concealed, and you wouldn't know I had it if I was standing next to you - or even hugged up to you. I guarantee you that there have always been people carrying at WDW, every day.

No costumes at mnsshp just makes me sad. :( banning it on a regular day is fine, but mnsshp?

Right!

If they can't sell them I don't think the CMs would have them.
Exactly.

Personally I agree with banning toy guns. Although banning bubble guns too is going a bit too far. I mean, who doesnt like bubbles?!
