Is it possible to get a free upgrade to concierge? If so, how do you do it?

It's possible, but it seems to be luck of the draw. I don't think there's really anything you can do to increase your chances, other than already having a room booked in a resort that offers club level. If you want, you can always ask at check-in what the availability is. I know at one time, you could get an upgrade at the WL for a fraction of the cost, but that was a while ago, when they were having difficulty filling those rooms. Chances are now though, that if you have to ask, the upgrade will not be free. Doesn't hurt to try I guess. Worst they can tell you is that you'll have to pay the difference in rack rates and then you can politely decline.

I think it's definitely luck - being in the right place at the right time.

From what I've read here, upgrades seem to be done for the resort's convenience, and are largely assigned ahead of time. If they need to even out the room counts for the housekeepers, or free up a block of rooms for a convention, or take rooms out of service for maintenance, they may upgrade some people to more expensive rooms. This is all figured out and done before you even arrive.

So, upgrades do happen, but they're not as common as they appear from reading these boards. Remember that the concierge rooms at a deluxe are a small percentage of the total rooms in the resort, and most of them are booked by paying customers. So there just aren't that many rooms available for upgrades.

It's not something I'd get my hopes up about. You can ask when you check in, but I think it's more than likely that they'll tell you what it would cost to upgrade instead of offering it for free.

My opinion is when you are upgraded to a Club Level floor or building at the Deluxe Resorts it's totally random, so if you really want to stay in one then the best thing to do is to make a reservation for one. This way you won't feel disappointed if you were not upgraded at check-in.
