Concierge - should I buy insurance now?

We booked the 12-night Med cruise sailing on July 14, 2014 - now less than a year away! It dawned on me today that our very large deposit on our concierge suite is non-refundable and, although I added the DCL insurance to our reservation, it doesn't go into effect until I pay, in full, for the cruise.

Our balance isn't due until Feb. 14, 2014, but I feel like I need to insure that deposit now just in case something happens in the next 7 months. It seems like my choices are 1) paying for the cruise in full now so that my coverage effective date starts now, or 2) buying a separate insurance policy.

I like the Disney insurance. I actually think it's fairly reasonable and I like the fact that if we cancel and the insurance co. rejects our claim, DCL will give us a credit for the non-refundable amount so we can go on another cruise. HOWEVER, I didn't really want to pay the entire balance right now.

I already checked insuremytrip.com and found similar coverage which I could purchase now without paying the balance, however, it's slightly more expensive and I won't get the DCL credit if the insurance co. rejects the claim for some reason.

Any thoughts or words of advice would be greatly appreciated! I have never booked a cruise this far out so I'm not really sure what to do. I really don't want to lose our deposit if something should happen!!

I just booked concierge for Aug 2014 and will be buying trip ins with the cancel for any reason option this weekend. I think it is worth it because the it also covers pre-existing conditions that way as well. With little ones, you never know what life will bring. It's a big chunk of change to lose if something unexpected comes up.

Do youimd sharing who you buy your policy from for the cancel for any reason? Thanks.

Your DCL insurance would NOT go into effect just because you paid the balance in full. It doesn't go into effect until the PIF date for your cruise. I recommend calling DCL to remove that from your reservation since it hasn't actually been paid for yet and get the cancel for any reason policy with a separate company. I think insuremytrip.com will give you a list of companies to choose from.

We got our trip insurance through Allizanz and as long as you get it within 14 days of putting a deposit down it does cover preexisting conditions.

Just wanted to make sure you knew that you are able to move your concierge cruise deposit to another cruise date as long as you do so before the "drop dead" PIF date (I mean that as opposed to the 120 day mark). So, should something happen before that, the deposit will transfer over to whatever cruise you choose. We never buy insurance until we've made final payment because we know if something happens before that (or we just change our minds), we just move the cruise out. Of course, if you want the option of canceling instead of changing your dates, then just ignore me. :-)

Thank you for all of the great information everyone! I checked and I missed the window of opportunity to purchase the cancel-for-any-reason insurance, so I can either buy a separate policy now or just wait it out and buy the DCL insurance on my PIF date. I'm leaning toward waiting - I like that I can move my deposit to another date (thank you for the advice AlexandNessa!) before the PIF, so I'll do that if I have to. Thanks again everyone!

I use Travel Insured. I believe the world wide trip protector plans have the cancel for any reason option.

Yes, and for some plans kids are free. Great value when you got 4!
