I read on another forum that the change between direct and resale will be that resale points may not be used on the concierge collection. Has anyone else heard anything similar?

Nope.

Points are points. They can't prevent you from using your points no matter how you acquired them.

It's a possibility. Nothing is official yet. Members who attended the annual meeting in December were told that changes were forthcoming regarding points purchased directly from Disney versus points purchased by resale.

Would this proposed change affect you or anger you?

Probably wouldn't affect us much. In 14 years, we used points for the cruise one time, for non-DVC WDW lodging once (actually bought a reservation from another member with distressed points) and never for non-Disney lodging.

I've heard this rumor along with the rumor that they may possibibly even take the option of using your points at other DVC resorts that are not your "home." I bought all my contracts directly through Disney, but I feel strongly that it will de-value our memberships if they do this. I believe resale prices will plummet even further than they have if this goes into effect.

If they do this...do you think it would be effective immediately for all current members or would it only effect new resale purchases? Do they currently have a way to track how the contracts were purchased?:confused3

This doesn't really effect us. I think that the biggest thing that might happen is it may make it possible to get some of the concierge reservations that people seem to have trouble trading into now. We don't usually trade out of Disney though.

These are wild, unsubstantiated rumors. The only hard evidence is a comment made by Lewis at the annual meeting in which he said they would probaly be starting a program offering some benefits not available to others for those with either high points or high in bringing in new members and that the high point aspect may take into consideration points bought through Disney as opposed to resale. No details were provided, no further explanation was given, and no one has any idea yet what those benefits might be or what levels of points they are talking about. There has been no mention by DVD that those with resale points may not be able to use the concierge collection and that rumor does not even make sense to me. In fact, other than the above, there has been no mention by anyone within Disney with real knowledge of what DVD might do or authority to make decisions on anything that there will be any differences beteen Disney and resale points except for what Lewis mentioned at the meeting.

I think any tinkering with booking options could devalue contracts.

Depends upon your perspective.

It's possible that resale prices would drop a bit further. So in that sense it would be a negative. But I have to wonder how many people buy a timeshare with the idea that it will have some specific value at some specific point in the future.

Whether it's a Disney timeshare or any other, that's a pretty foolish approach to take. Timeshares should be purchased because you intend to use them for 30 or 40 or 50 years...not because you can readily get your money back if you change your mind.

The other side of the coin is it would mean fewer people competing for things like Disney Cruises booked on points. As we saw a few months back, demand for cruises is apparently running ahead of the supply available to members. I've also heard about members being blocked out of some destinations like the Disneyland Hotel due to excessive demand.

By limiting the number of individuals who can book these options, those who have access should experience greater success in their bookings.
