I didn't say what you shared is wrong, just that it's being interpreted inaccurately for...whatever reason. You are attempting to make it seem like the DVC board hand waved the issue of commercial renting and walking. I do not believe that is the case. Assuming your quotes are verbatim, saying something is not widespread, common practice, and comprises only a small percent of all membership reservations is not the same as saying it isn't a huge deal that impacts overall membership. You are attempting to conflate the two statements. Like I've said before, none of those terms are statistically relevant enough to make that determination. Is a small percent 15%? Is not common practice 30%? Is not widespread 25%? If we stick to the facts, there is no room for interpretation and therefore no ability to put our own spin on things. Facts they stated, as quoted-
Shannon Sakaske, Vice President, Member Experiences & Club Management described it this way:
"There’s two types of renting that members do. One that you alluded to, which is ‘I’m not going to use my points this year. They’re going to expire and I want to get some money to offset my dues.’ That’s allowed within our rules. We allow members the flexibility to rent.
"The other category is someone who is doing it commercially. They own a lot of points and it’s a frequent occurrence. We are actively figuring out ways to go after that, and stop that to the best of our ability. Hopefully this is not a conversation we will be having in future years. We’re going to go after that and try to remedy it as best we can."
Senior Vice President and General Manager Bill Diercksen confirmed that Disney Vacation Club has "added resources to our core team at DVC in order to pursue this and make sure that it is fair".
Yvonne Chang, Executive Director, Business Operations "[w]e’ve got a whole team of folks focused on this. Hopefully by next year when we have this conversation, we will see some improvement.”
According to Sakaske "[w]e’re aware of that dynamic and the impact that it can have on others who are waiting on the 11 month window to book. We set those rules and it’s something we could change if we find a better approach."
Chang later added: "[o]ne of the responsibilities obviously as a board is always to listen to feedback and certainly to act on behalf of the membership as a whole. To make sure that whatever rules are changed are…because of your input and because it benefits everyone. Everything that is done sometimes has unintended consequences."
"The members that are walking—they don’t like to do that either. So we’re looking at different solutions as Yvonne mentioned. How do we maintain the spirit of what we want, which is fewer calls into the reservation center [or going online] to make the booking. But at the same time, make sure we aren’t creating any unintended consequences."
Those were all quotes but they were not everything said. They were handpicked by the authors to share and not part of official DVC minutes.
It was a summary and as I said, the end of those quotes is the part about flexibility…which you didn’t quote.
Sakaske agreed, saying "“[w]e appreciate that plans change, you don’t necessarily know everything when you’re booking 11 months out, so that’s exactly what we’re talking about that we want to try to avoid. Unintended consequences of making (an operational) change.”
. That article simply did not include everything that was said or asked.
Those of us who have said additional things not quoted in the article were because they were said.
All of those quotes came from one meeting too. VGF. They did not get said at the SSR meeting and the reviews by that same site show it didn’t come up at every meeting.
The context of the quote regarding resources and Yvonne’s team focused on it came right after the large point owners comment.
They did not say it was a new team…and they definitely said more that supported their desire for owners right to rent and not making changes that would impact an owners flexibility.
Like I said, that DVC News article that quoted me did not include my actual question nor did it include the entire answer.
We are this far. 7 months, from the meeting, and there has been a lack of changes from DVC.
Context matters and they did not present this to all owners, but rather as a response to a specific question. Owners who went to meetings where renting did not come up, did not get info from the board.
Plus, they said we are open to changes “if we can find a better way” and that how do we “get to the spirit of what we want…fewer calls to MS…without unintended consequences.
If we are going to go what was said, then they said it’s not a common practice and it represented a small % of all reservations.
I am reporting first hand information on what was said and giving context to where it was said at the VGF meeting.
I can say that several of the 40 to 50 people who were there walked away with the same impression I did and I know that because we had conversations amongst ourselves.
As I stated…we have two things in writing…the check box change and that the 2011 policy is still the offical one.
We also have verbal reports from several at MS that no policy changes are coming. At some point, that will turn out to be either true or false.
