Commercial renting website

The site may be, probably is, a commercial renting website. I don't think Disney has ever officially defined what constitutes commercial renting BUT

they don't appear to be making reservations at popular times on spec. I can understand Disney not being happy but I'm not sure how this activity hurts other members.:confused3 Point "morphing" and ebay sellers who book popular times on spec impact other members. I doubt most renters know to book at the 11 and 7 month window or if the owners are willing to call a day at a time.

True, but it certainly goes against the spirit of the POS which says we can't rent for commercial purposes. This certainly looks commercial to me.

All of these comments are great, but has any one reported them to Disney?
I would if I knew who to call. Has anyone called Disney Legal?

Actually, they are, OP found this site thru an Ebay listing a July 1 thru 6th. booking. Because of July 4th this IS a peak time.

True but we don't know how many reservations a year they're renting. The fact that the owner is using a website rather than using the for rent board doesn't by itself make it commercial. The person seems to be getting $14/ point compared with the $10-$12 price that seems to be the norm on DIS. The increased price might justify the cost of the website even if the owner wasn't renting that many points.

Some posters think 20 rentals a year may be the threshold. Some think the issue is making reservations on "spec". Others think the issue is owners that are renting points owned by others. Prior to the new transfer rules a person might try to rent points on DIS for $10 and then use this website to rent for $14. That certainly would be a commercial activity. It might also be commercial if the owner of the website had a network of DVC owners and matched the renter with the owner that had the necessary points available.

I suspect the website is commercial. We don't know that for a fact but this isn't the kind of activity that hurts other DVC members.

And what else is very interesting is how much investment this person has made in DVC over the last couple of years. In looking at the property that is deeded to him and a significant other from the Orange County property site, what I see is they have over $83,000+ in points purchased at BCV, BWV and SSR during 2004-2005.

That's one heck of a lot of personal vacation time!

It's a good thing the internet didn't exist back in 1692 or nobody would have made it out of Salem alive.

I disagree.

I think websites advertising bargain rate Disney "magic" in a way that appear to a consumer to be a direct competition/undercutting of Disney vacations send a message to Disney Legal that people are using DVC to operate under-the-table backyard tourist agencies and eat into the business and profits of legitimate, liscensed Disney travel agencies and Disney CRO. This type of activity raises red flags and provides the tipping point that is causing Disney to crack down on all rentals - even legitimate rental and transfer activity (i.e that which is done for personal vacation usage). Abuse of any system hurts everyone.

The other thing that needs to be considered is whether or not they are just using their own points or if they are cruising places like the Rent/Trade Board looking for points on the cheap that they are reselling to people visiting their website.

Are you kidding me?? 83,000 points!!! I wonder how well of a business this is for them??

If they purchase during the 2004 - 2005 time frame my guess is they own 1,000 points or so.

I was making a ressie this mornign and mentioned the site to MS. The CM said she was going to pass it on to her manager when we got off the line. Who knows if it will make it anywhere from there.

This was posted by Win Smith (DrDisney@getawaymagic.........) in a Windows Live Spaces blog:

Thanks for the great work.

I got my invite on the 23rd. I had my website finished on the 24th. I had my first sale on the 28th. I am a happy camper. Check it out - Getawaymagic.com

This is perfect for me since I had a real need to change my Disney room inventory on a regular basis. I used to have to modify the webpage offline, grab the page and ftp it to the host. Basically I stopped doing it and just had static pages at the host and was using email to send out the room inventory info.

Thank you again - OfficeLive is a real winner

Sounds pretty darn commercial to me.

$14 dollars a point, thats it. My site gets me $20 per point. They must be doing something wrong!

OK everyone just kidding:lmao:

$20 per point...I can dream can't I?

I would think that most of us if we had some points to rent for someone reason wouldn't set up a website to do it. You could offer it to friends or family or do something on the R/T board.

That woman that has the "ebook" about doing WDW cheap, touts the best way to save $$$$ is rent points from DVC owners.

Really I think people rent at $10/pt as it's easy math for everyone!

Whoever it is, they sure have nerve using Disney's own photographs(copyright issues right there for the lawyers to go after) and diagrams.
