If you're on the C or E line, you'd get off at Union Station, in which case you'd be better off hopping on the free mall shuttle as far east as it goes, then walk from there (maybe 3-5 blocks).

I stopped by Wal-Mart tonight to get Fiona the "right" shade of pink sparkly fingernail polish to go with the princess dresses for the cruise coming up. I was holding it in my left hand while we walked around the store (no cart, so I don't pick up a bunch of things, right?)... and I hear a "pop" and the polish covers my hand!!! The glass bottle exploded from the warmth of my palm!!! So now I have sparkly hands that have just now stopped being sticky... Got it on my wedding rings and everything... The nail polish remover got the pink off, but not the sparkles.

Karma is such an annoyance, I tell ya...

Looking on the bright side at least it didn't explode in your suitcase.

Thanks! We are coming in on the D line from Mineral, so not having to keep track of the buses sounds like the way to go!


btw, everyone in our group gives Jim N Nick's a thumbs up. Their special veggie of the day was southern green beans. Mmmm. And the cheesy cornbread muffins they bring as an appetizer are yummy, too. The brisket wasn't as smoky as my favorites, but it was getting there and was incredibly tender. The lemonade drew raves from the three who ordered it. And we all feasted on the gigantic and freshly battered & fried onion rings. Oh! And the mac and cheese was reaaaallly tasty.

No dieting today!

DemonLlama, I think you understand about the litte shack of a BBQ place that we stopped at. OMG, it was the best ever.

How about Mustard and Potato Chip sandwiches? My uncle got me hooked on them as a kid -- just put a lot of yellow mustard on a slice of Wonder bread and put a lot of Lays potato chips on it. Put the other slice of bread on top and smash real hard. I haven't had one in years, but it was probably the oddest food we ate as a kid.

The oddest food as an adult has to go to my DW's family. They make this "stacker" that has a bed of rice, topped with shredded lettuce, diced chicken, cream of mushroom soup, shredded cheddar cheese, coconut, pineapple, water chestnuts, chow mein noodles and slivered almonds. Then add a dash of soy sauce. Sounds disgusting, but I was amazed when I first tried it.

I think I might win the weirdest/surprisingly good foods ever:

Homemade pickles (the ones you make out the cucumbers you'd grow in the summer and pickle in the jar yourself)

WITH... oreos.

On the subject of BBQ, we've been hoping to find a decent pit place around here and plan to give Jim and Nick's a try now, so thanks Fizzgig for the suggestion.

I looked them up online and the original shack and ancestry looks promising (Alabama) plus the 14 hour pit smoking. It's all about the meat for us instead of sauce. (Brothers had been talked up by several folks we'd met but they seem to depend on their sauce more than the smoky meat flavor we're craving.)

The best BBQ I've ever eaten was in three places, all small towns in Texas, all on the "wrong" side of the tracks, in buildings I can't imagine the fire marshal would ever deem safe. The pit-smokers sat outside on the grass, roughly in the center of the "parking" which was wherever you could squeeze in on the grass.

The kitchens were filled with beautifully large black women who called you "honey" and hollered at each other with amazing warmth as they bustled around the kitchen (which typically looked like your own kitchen at home only busier).

All three places seem to be continually packed, never any tables, although I should mention these places have no more than about 10 tables inside anyway. C'mon. These are shacks, after all.

(There's usually some picnic tables scattered about the front of the places for people who just insist on staying put with their food.)

Also must-be-on-the-menu items: collards, buttermilk pies (whole), cobblers, and sweet tea that must have been made with 2 oz. of tea and a whole bag of sugar.

If you are ever traveling through the East Texas area between Dallas and Houston, give 'em a try. Most go back 50 years, same family, recipes handed down. Mouth is just watering thinking about them.

I have to partially agree with you about the meat....

nearly every decent BBQ place in KC smokes their meat overnight. You can smell the restaurant long before you reach it!! However, it's the right combination of meat and sauce that does it for me. It's like the yin and the yang -- gotta have both.

There are a lot of small places like you mention in KC, but they only serve the basics: meat, beans, slaw, fries, potato salad, bread and of course, sauce. We had one close to our house in KS - Big Bubba's BBQ, but my favorite "shack" BBQ is "Little Jakes eat it and beat it". It was so small that it only had two long tables and a line out the door every day for lunch. You ate quickly with everyone else, stood, or took it with you as there was no room to move.

Consistently good meat and the best sauce available -- however, even if I use the sauce at home, it's not the same as being there enjoying their smoked meat topped with their sauce.

Now on the subject of sweet tea -- that's something I just can't understand.

Fizzgig, I feel your pain. Sparkles stick to everything. We made the mistake of letting our dd use a gift card she'd received to buy a Bratz doll with little shaker jars of sparkles. They are all over her bedroom, bathroom, and our kitchen table and they won't wipe off the wood. Sometimes I notice one on dh's forehead, and hope that he's not going to work that way.

The best bar-b-que I've ever had was in Mississippi. There is/was Betty Davis's off of US-45, going north of Oxford, and there's a respectable-looking place going east of Oxford, towards Tupelo that I just remember what it used to look like when I was in college. Made the -best- bar-b-que chicken.

And I don't particularly care for Memphis bar-b-que, but I keep promising myself I'll make it back one day for Memphis in May and the National Bar-b-que contest.

DH survived the Paintball Smackdown of '08 and seems to be a masochist. He has a swollen ring finger and several welts from getting shot, and yet he wants to go back! If you know where Amazing Jake's is in Aurora, the paintball place is right up the frontage road, where the old Carpet Mill place used to be. What a nut. He said they make their money from requiring you use their paint balls, but entrance fee was only $20... Lemme repeat that, for $20 and the price of paintballs, you TOO can have welts! Crazeeee person.

Fizz - that was me on Thanksgiving. My first paintball experience I had welts on my fingers, legs, arms and back. I loved it and can't wait to do it again.

Quick update...

Things are progressing on the job front. DH is going for a third interview on Wed for a place in Golden. We're a little unsure if the money will quite be enough, we'll really have to go over the benefits (they pay 100% of medical which is nice). He's got a second interview with another place, and hoping to hear back from a few other places.

But I'm going to WDW today! Okay, not exactly a WDW trip, but I will be there. My Dad's birthday is Thursday, and before we moved, SW had a fare sale, and so we decided that I could go and surprise my Dad for his birthday. My mom and I are so excited that today is finally here, we can't wait to see his reaction. Tomorrow we are going to go to AK to celebrate the park's 10th anniversary, even though Disney isn't doing anything. I'll be back on Friday.

Do you have grocery delivery where you live? I think it is Safeway that does 3 free deliveries, and I know that's my worst chore. Having someone else roam the aisles for me is a relief.

I have a sunburn (which doesn't take much, frankly) from planting herbs in the backyard plus I have 5 pots with Mint (x4 types), Basil (x2 or 3), and Sage. I have no idea if they'll survive my family, but it was worth a try! DH has aspirations of terracing the backyard's hill, but I'm quashing that idea for the moment. Once he finishes his classes and he does the other parts of the "honey-do?" list, we'll talk. He also wants a koi pond and a swingset with shredded rubber below it in our very shady backyard... oh, and a composter... and a rain collector... and and.... See where I'm headed?
