college textbooks

Won't get mine until Wednesday. LAst semester it was 85 for one class. Workbook and 2 videos but it is used for 2 semesters.

I'm used to paying outrageous prices for textbooks, I've been doing it forever -- this is my third degree. What I can't get over and resent paying, is the outrageous prices for parking!!! That definitely should be covered in tuition! Come on! Even the students who live on campus have to pay to park! :earseek: You think they'd be allowed to park for free at their own home!! Good grief!!

About high schoolers who have to pay for their textbooks.... I went to a catholic high school and had to pay for my textbooks as well

God Bless America!!

DS is in 4th grade in a parochial school. We have to buy his textbooks from someone in the next grade at the end of the year, and then after using them for the year, sell them to someone in the lower grade moving up.  When I was a kid, the school "owned" all the textbooks!
My textbooks? I don't even want to add them up. Biology was $108, Psych was $96, Algebra and Bio Lab I don't recall.

i think we should get together a text book exchange next semester... hehehe... :p

Pin Wizard,
when I attended parochial school we didn't have to buy textbooks either. I remember that we had to cover the books
and we had to bag them up at the end of the year.

I'm a college professor and I have to choose what books my students will be required to purchase. Cost is a consideration. However, I've also got to consider whether the book is good, relevant to the course, up to date, easy to digest, etc. If you don't like a book or thought it was too expensive, say so in your course evaluations -- after all, that is my grade for the course.

OOOHHH JEEZ! im not looking forward to having to pay soo much next year for college. The only fee i pay for my books at my school is if i lose it :teeth:

My college holds classes in 8 week blocks.... this block I have only 1 class but the books were $112...... in 8 weeks I'll have to shell out more $$.

Yes, books are very expensive. That is why in one of the courses I teach I deliberately try to use books you can get off the shelf at a Barnes and Noble or Borders. That way I can get 6 or 7 books and still keep the cost at about $100 or less.

I bought a book for $113 and a textbook on CD for $82 at the "non-profit" bookstore. :)

I remember for an English class, I spent over $200 on books!

The school I used to work for would oversell parking passes so 1/2 the time you couldn't even find a spot. And, during baseball season, they'll open the school lots for fan parking which makes it even worse  I was so glad I took the train in after hearing all the complaints from my coworkers.

BTW, I paid $400 for my books for law school. Luckily, I went early & got all my books used with a few exceptions that weren't that expensive. It would easily have been $200 more if I hadn't gotten used.

Did you ever think about what needs to go into creating the textbooks? Authors/writers need to be paid. Research needs to be done. Editing costs, paper, binding. It all goes into the cost of the finished product.

Sort of like the analogy of a prescription pill. It might actually cost $.50 to make the specific pill but you are charged $10.00 for that one pill. The cost covers the research and development that went into the product.

This is my last semester and I just paid $612.00; that doesn't include my cap and gown either. I am taking 4 classes each with a total of 2 books. All are new editions. Thank god this is my last semester. Hopefully your school has a good buy back program. Here at FGCU we get at least 50% of the purchase price if they are going to be using the text for the next semester.

i used to spend about $500/semester on books when i was in college. it was a hard pill to swallow.

$285 just for Med Micro class. The instructor about flipped when we told him, his comment while flipping through the $140 text was "Where's the gold leafing?"

I ended up spending about $600, mainly nursing books.

Psych $108
Of course this is a new book for the college so they're all new!

Biology $96
Biology lab $45
Prealgebra $75
And for English we only need an ANCIENT used copy of Wuthering Heights at about 3.50.

DS had to cover his books this year. This is a first. I was telling him how we used to get the brown shopping bags and make book covers out of them. He got a kick out of that story. Of course these days they have "book socks." LOL! :p He came home that day and said..."Mom, one of the boys in class has book covers like you told me" (meaning paper bags.) :p

I need 9 books for 6 classes. I went today to get books and spent about $250, and I still need to get 2 more!

This semester I only had to pay about 250 unlike last year when I paid 330 for both semesters. I don't have as many books which is really nice and thank god they are all used but, one of my friends just paid almost tripple from the original price for one book. Oh it's good ol' back to school time.
