cockaroach OKW style

Holy cow! Now it's lizards, frogs and roaches at OKW on top of the golf balls, cars broken in to and perverts.

Not a good day for OKW. :confused3

Probably so! They creap me out for sure. I just wanted people to know that it isn't always about being dirty or leaving food behind. Palmetto bugs will come in no matter what in FLA. BLEECK!!!

Another thing about Palmetto bugs that differentiates them from cockroaches...and I know people aren't going to like this, if they don't know about it already...is that they fly. :scared1:

So, now you have a cockroach looking creature that is dive bombing you. They must have a sick sense of humor. But like lllovell said, they come as they please. Unfortunately, it is FL and no matter how much you clean, they will be there. Again, as everyone else has mentioned, just call down and report it and OKW will be happy to come and take care of it.

Gee whiz, folks. This is FLORIDA!!! Palmetto bugs (roaches) are all over the place and they aren't a housekeeping issue. They get in via any opening they can find.

Everyone wants to stay over at the AKL so that they can watch the animals from their balcony. But, provide a little native Florida wildlife right in your room and people go ballistic.

If a giraffe came in my room, you can bet I'd go ballistic! ;) Looking at animals and critters, and having them share my bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen is a little different.

Ssssoooo....what are the little pinpoint sized buggies running around on my Entenmann's buns this morning? Yuck. I've got all food, as well as paper cups and plastic bags, in the fridge now. And it just killed me to throw out anything Entenmann's!

Lizards & Geckos & Froggies--OH MY!! :scared1:
Shower mold & dirty room @OKW :scared:
please tell which rms have been refurbished recently? We are booked in for Sunday-Thurs after Thanksgiving & wildlife is nasty enough (although I find most Geckos charming) but candy wrappers, skeevy carpets & moldy bathrms--YIKES!
Is there any spray or other ways, other than the DH escort, to de-palmetto bug rooms? I used to live in So. Texas & remember those babies big enough to throw a saddle on!
I like viewing the wildlife at AK, but cannot say I'd enjoy a giraffe in the john or wake up to a lion in the pullout !
;)

getting creeped out here-
Jean

A FROG!! Cool! Some people have all the luck!

Palmetto bugs are roaches, just like groundhogs and woodchucks.
One roach is not a problem. Stomp, and it's over. (But see http://www.answers.com/topic/palmetto-bug). In our house I call single roaches "migratory". Several roaches indicates a problem.

Floridians know the "lizards" as anoles, and we think of them as friendly critters. They eat bugs, are harmless, and are common. We always get a kick out of "northerners" oohing and ahhing over them.

Darn and I wanted to try OKW out next year. Still might, but DD (9)has a MAJOR phobia of bugs, bees, spiders, ladybugs, flies..you name it. There could be a bug 50 feet away and she'll spot it. Even if it won't bother her or it's not in her path she will march right back inside. I haven't seen any bugs at any of the other places we've been (BCV, SSR, BWV) is this a real common thing at OKW? We are all pretty allergic to mold and mildew as well. Is there a "newer" room we can ask for? Then again, after reading this..I bet everyone will ask for the same thing! I'd hate to stay there have this happen. It would really make it a difficult vacation. My 2 yo DD would probably pick it up and sqeeze it like a toy!

Instead of people watching, we've been known to be BUG watching at WDW. Did you ever see the palmetto bugs that are all over the boardwalk at the Boardwalk??? They are almost defiant, they wait until the last second as someone approaches before they go under the boards!

Or how bout at DTD where we've seen them crawling all over the Lego people. ICK! :scared:

See, you get the bugs because of the rain....or the heat...or the food...

Then you get the lizards to eat the bugs....

Next you get the cats to eat the bugs....

Then comes the dogs to chase the cats away....

Then you start to wonder why you left your bug-free house to see a castle and an oversized golf ball in the middle of a former swamp! :earsboy:

:music: I don't know why she swallowed the fly....perhaps she'll die... :earboy2:

And here i was sitting on my hands to avoid saying that! :sad2:

I wouldn't spray to get rid of Palmetto bugs. I moved down to Georgia last year and got a rude introduction to these roaches. That spray that kills them affects you too. You could bring some baits with you but then you'll have to deal with the carcasses. This year I found out you can buy granulated bait for outside so you can reduce the population within a perimeter of your home...plus a sand that kills them and the fire ants and fleas (and who knows what else). Virtually no invasion this year and I don't have to live with it. I guess Disney can't take that approach.

I'd just seal up my food in plastic or in the fridge, call maintenance if its really bad and relax. The rugs and showers however...that is skeevy...I'd call mousekeeping fer sure...I'd hate to take some disease. FWIW I'd seal up my food no matter how clean the room looks...it is amazing how far up ants will go when they find food. For one or two palmettos I'd grab the broom & hit them...they are much more fragile than the german roaches.

PS. A little roach lesson. The german roaches you find in the northeast are thoroughly domesticated...they've come to love the easy life with humans. american/palmettos are peri-domesticated. They'd rather rough it in the lawn, dead leaves or rotting wood but if it gets too dry or too wet they will come indoors with you for relief. Also palmettos don't fly...they are gliding...thank goodness because you can guess where they will wind up.

Well, it's Florida, so I expect to see bugs, lizards and such.

As far as the dirty rug & bathroom, I'd have called Housekeeping.

How about alligators? Someone asked the guy driving the boat today to DtD if there are any in the waterway, and he said there was one a week ago...first one sighted there in 5 years or so. :confused3

Maybe the alligator can eat the enoles and the salamanders and the roaches and the palmettos and....

Sounds like you better go during November-February, because the bugs aren't too bad then! We have seen plenty of anoles, bugs, frogs and other nasty looking bugs besides palmetos all over WDW. It isn't just OKW that is blessed, but perhaps the trees and all those ponds on the golf course help encourage the little buggers.

I told my DD about it and she did one of these: :earseek: I 'd really like to check OKW out though. We didn't have any bugs at SSR in late July. Do they come out all summer or more towards the end?

We stayed at OKW the first week of June and never had a problem with any critters. Of course we saw some anoles outside but I don't recall seeing any palmetto bugs at all.

You'll find these creatures all over WDW, not just OKW. Anywhere you have trees and shrubs. First we have all the people who want to spend hours cleaning their room, then we have all the people who want to kill all the natural wildlife.

What next? Kill all the rodents, dogs and ducks?
