Coach on sidelines five hours after birth

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The Nebraska-Kearney basketball team didn't mind that coach Carol Russell was a little late for the game.

Five hours after giving birth to her first child, Russell was back on the bench and encouraging her players in the North Central Region basketball tournament.

"I could have watched the Webcast, but I wanted to be there for the girls because they've been working so hard for this all year," Russell said.

North Dakota beat the Lopers 108-75 for the regional championship Monday night and advanced to the NCAA Division II tournament in Kearney, Neb.

Russell said her team seemed tired in the second half. Tired was something she could relate to.

"I usually stand up the whole game but I didn't have the energy," said the 35-year-old Russell, who's in her fifth year as coach.

Russell, who had permission from doctors to attend the game, arrived at the game early in the first half. Assistant coach Tim Connealy took over most of the coaching duties while Russell provided mostly "input and encouragement."

"I was about 3 minutes late," Russell said. "I'm always on my kids about being late, but I guess they understood why I was."

Newborn Isaac bounced in at 6 pounds, 14 ounces earlier on Monday.

Isaac may have a permanent reminder about his time in North Dakota, Russell said.

"My family is kidding me about naming him Dakota," Russell said. "We're still searching for a middle name and that's an option."

Yikes! And I thought I was crazy for going back to work 7 days after my dd was born. Okay, so that was crazy too. I can admit it now.

It really makes me wonder why she even had a child if she can't pull herself away from her job for the first 24 hours of her little baby's life.

Whatever you do - don't show my husband that , or he'll think I'm milking my "injuries" after we have our baby! :lmao:

gheesh :scared1:

5 hours after having my daughter I was so high on morphine I wouldn't have been able to find the bathroom let alone go back to work. :rotfl2:

I wouldn't do that but if I hadn't had an epidural I could of done that! I didn't feel my legs until about 6 hours later. About 12 hours after I gave birth I was upstairs visiting my dad who was in the hospital for something else. I felt fine.

My thoughts exactly. Clearly shows the priorities in this woman's life. :sad2:

I can't imagine what she's going to tell her baby when he/she grows up..."I gave birth to you, but the big game came first!"

I personally don't know her so I don't want to judge, but IMHO I would NEVER do that! :confused3

I was at the store 7 hours after birth and working 2 days later. Everyone has a different pain threshold and can bounce back quickly.

I think there's a difference between going to the store, and going back to your job because the game is taking place within on a few hours of giving birth. Personally, I'm not questioning her pain threshold...I'm questioning her priorities if she finds it necessary to go back to coaching only a few hours after giving birth.

Yep. I had no problems doing anything after giving birth. More power to her. I have a feeling her little boy entered the world a bit early since she was there to coach the game.

Too bad they lost to my old school....GO UND!!:cheer2:

I think Coaches are overly dedicated to their teams and she may have felt that she had a responsibility to be there. I wouldn't be at any sporting event for any reason myself but my DH says they take these things VERY seriously.

Not everyone is the same. I think it is kind of harsh to say she isn't a good mother. If she felt well enough to go coach the game, then thats great. I am sure she loves her baby just as much as any mother.

It's not like the fate of the free world depends on her being at work. It's a game. Not all that important in the grand scheme of things. I don't think anyone would fault her for choosing her newborn over sitting on the bench. In fact, I bet more people fault her for having that as a priority!

yeah, it sounds like she is sort of an attention seeker (wow, look at the coach, she is so tough) or a total control freak (no one can replace me, even for a few hours), LOL.
