Clueless guest comments at WDW

I worked in the Magic Kingdom during the summer of 1996 (college program). I had guests ask me all the time where they could find Bugs Bunny or Tweety Bird. For the most part, when I said those characters were not part of Disney, they accepted the facts. However, occasionally they were just convinced that I was stupid. In those cases, I sent them to Adventureland hoping Brer Rabbit would pass for Bugs Bunny!

I feel kind of sad for these people... I love WDW so much that it's sad to think that these people don't get the full effect.
And by the way... the big ball will always be the "big ball"!!! even if it technically has another name.

I think I asked a stupid question once. I have been coming to Disney all my life, but a couple of years ago I went with a friend to Epcot. We decided to go to The Living Seas. We walk around that place 3 times looking for the ride, until we finally broke down and asked a CM. I was completely clueless to the fact that they took the ride part out and only had the hydrolators. Kind of embarassing since I was supposed to be the Disney expert.

I would also like to add that one of my pet peeves is when people call the Magic Kingdom 'Disney World'. I try to be nice and explain that Magic Kingdom is one of many places in Disney World, but it's still like nails on a chalk board.

And something that I overheard at Epcot:
Cast Members name tag says British Columbia
Mom to daughter: I thought this was the Canadian pavilion.

I love it when you have FastPasses you decide you can't use so you try to give them to someone & they look at you like you are handing them a used kleenex..

Oh I forgot. In 2002 my husband and I were in Epcot at the Living Seas. We got downstairs and I asked a CM about the ride that used to be here. He looked at me as if I had lobsters growing out of my ears. He told me there never was a ride here. I knew he was wrong but I let it go. Maybe he was new.

ok , I am a smoker....im trying to quit (wellbutrin) but anyway this blew me away......

i just finished having a very pricey dinner and wine nite at AKL jiko...so im outside having a butt.....this rude woman walks by me and says........"my god, so much for designated smoking areas" under her breath but loud enough for me to hear.........................

as im standing next to a very large hard to miss ashtray!!

ok i understand the park smoking thing.... i would never dream of puffing away while in line for dumbo....but really this whole smoking thing , not just in Disney but everywhere especially outdoors is getting really old...i feel bad if a non-smoker has to smell the smoke as it wafts by but we are people too......i dont scream at the man in line behind me that smells of B.O. and just let a fart rip.....and to me that is worse!!!!!

These are hilarious, please post more. In defense of us OLDER fans, at one point MK and Disney World were pretty much one and the same, so I can see how that mistake can be made. DH has always called the ball the "golf ball", he also keeps refering to places by their original names regardless of what's there now. We go yearly and he STILL complains that the skylift isn't there anymore.

I have had this happen to me as well. Or seeing people walk by as we are standing by the FP machine and looking at us very strangely.

I know it is funny to laugh at these naiive people, but I'm laughing until I cry imagining the big $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ these folks spend to walk around the parks staring at their maps. (and the ones who stop short to take a gander at the map are usually walking right in front of me!) Our family has been blessed in many ways, but not in the money department. We saved for over a year to go on our trip next week and I have researched it to death AGAIN (even after the last trips we've been on to WDW). There is always something new and different to experience that you didn't have time or the inclination for before.

I want to squeeze every bit of fun, comfort, ease of touring, and good food out of the trip that I can. Who knows what might happen to prevent us from visiting WDW again soon? Those few $1000's mean a lot to our family. I would feel as if I were letting my family down if I didn't give them the maximum of what WDW provides. To take this much money for granted is a luxury I can not imagine.

I am also so appreciative of the CM's. What we've heard on the DIS concerning clueless/rude guests is but a drop in the proverbial bucket.

on our last trip in Aug:

Guest to CM at MGM, "What is Fantasmic?"

I swear to God, I couldn't believe it. I said to my sister that I couldn't believe that people spend all this money and have NO idea what there is to do and see. She told me that she knew some people who have never been there and on their first trip were totally overwhelmed. Everyone thinks it's the size of Six Flags or something.

I'm sure I overheard some other funny things, but I can't remember now.

Several years ago we were standing in Canada and this man and I guess his wife walked up to us. He said "Excuse me, but what do you do here?" I said do you mean what do you do in Canada? And he says, "No, what do you do in Epcot?" He had walked through Future World and then to Canada and seemed to have no idea what Epcot was about. I gave him my Epcot park guide and advised him to read through it and wished him luck.

Actually, in some ways I can see where Future World might be confusing to 1st timers. There is the central plaza, then the huge semi-circles of Innoventions. Unless someone was specifically using the map, it might not be obvious that they needed to go through the Innoventions breezeways to get to the actual attractions.

They probably just started walking and were planning to go to things as they came to them.

We also call it the big golf ball, but of course we know what it really is (BTW, we also call the Washington Monument "the big pencil"). One time I told my coaster phobic son that it was an upside down roller coaster and every other car went upside down, which is why I could bring his younger brother on it since we were going in the car before his. He didn't *really* believe me, but wasn't totally sure that I wasn't serious.

The same thing happened at one of the restaurants at Epcot. I had told my husband we would grab a egg sandwich for breakfast. When we got there, there was no breakfast. I ask a CM and I was told they never have had breakfast served there, even though a few months before I had eaten one of the best egg sandwichs I had ever eaten. I knew I had not lost it as there were 18 of us on the orginal trip and one morning we all were supposed to go to Chef Mickeys. Well there was a big mix up in transportation and I was in a wheelchair, so as not to miss the PS I told them all to go on and we would catch up with them. My DH and myself deceided not to go and we grabed a sandwich at this rest, sat right by the window and it was such a nice quiet time before we all got together again.

I was in Epcot with my elderly Mother and Father on their first WDW trip. They are in good shape so we walk all over and see everything. In the late afternoon we were in Innoventions and I was exploring a bit. I walked up to Mom who was sitting on a bench next to another older woman. Mom waved me over and was asking about a restaurant as the lady she was talking to had never been to Epcot. The lady was interested in something that was not fast food. She was there with her grand children, had arrive a bit late, gone to the land pavilion and had been sitting in Innoventions for 3 hours while the kids played games!!! They knew there were a couple other pavilions at Epcot but didn't know anything about World Showcase. After I told her a bit more about the park and the restaurants in World Showcase she got up and hustled off the get the kids!!
At the MK in Liberty Square under the trees behind the Christmas store a Dad and 12 year old son were resting. Son looks up to dad ans says... "Dad, does Disney mean something?"
I squelched a laugh. Dad answered that "Disney was the man who started all this. He died a couple years ago."
After my first overly planned trip I was asked to help a couple other people. One lady was very interested and we talked and looked at books and maps for over an hour. Others are just extremely resistant to making reservations, getting up early and planning anything.

Sounds like me . Drives my daughter crazy. Last week while riding the WEDway People Mover I pointed out the Tomorrowland Skyway station. One evening we went to the Village (not DTD Marketplace of course). Coming off BTMRR I showed her where the canoes are supposed to be. DW and I always wave to Mr. Toad when we ride Pooh. I could go on and on (and I do when I'm there - LOL).

DS banked big on his Disney savvy. The teacher in his very difficult Calculus II AP class went to Disney with her small children. Sam got her moved from the All Stars to the Dolphin (teacher discount) and helped her get all her PS's and plan her days. The moment that teacher saw her little girls' joy at having breakfast with Cindy Sam became her favorite student. He finsihed up with an A for the year.

We used to get some real doozies at the resort Front Desk & Gst Svc areas.

"How do I get to the MGM Grand?"
Answer: Disney doesnt have anything to do with Gambling. But if you would like to visit the Disney studios we do have a bus. or That sure would be a long ride to LV.

"Which stop on the monorail is Universal?" "You mean you dont provide transportation to Universal."

Guest arriving at FW:
We are checking into the hotel. Where's the entrance?

Do you have camping equip? No our TA booked us for a room at $40 a night.

The best was a lady who was convinced the monorail had a stop inside MK and if she got off there she would not need a ticket to get in. I tried to explain but she was convinced this was possible. Felt sorry when the kids arrived at the MK Gate and Mom couldnt get in.

So often I wanted to say "Hey I only work here 365 days of the year, and you are here how many? So I must not know what I am talking about."

You know you are in trouble when not only you but your kids, 7 and 9 start piping up with information and advise, it's DH who rolls the eyes!

We had an "interesting" conversation with a family outside MS about FP. They were convinced of a charge for FP and dad was not going to spend another cent. When I put my PH pass in and showed them my FP and that no $ was involved they still didn't believe me. In fact they were convinced that the PH was linked to the cc'd they used to purchase it and they would be charged for every FP. Even a pointout to the guidemap didn't help, at that point I was pretty much done and had given up on them. I felt bad for the kids as I knew they would either not ride the "E"s or stand in line way to long.

I must say that I don't feel as bad as I should. I have planned a few vacations for our family other than WDW and would not dream of going without research. We had a marvelous trip 3 years ago to Hawaii and an even better one 5 years ago to Spain. DH compliments me all the time when we look at the pictures and we both know the trip would not have been half as good without my research.

With the internet and all the tools available there really isn't any excuse IMHO for spending that much $$ and not researching your destination.

Researching Washington DC for April right now and having fun. Of course planning for me is 1/2 the fun anyway.

We were at AK this weekend- the 8 am safari was very active with lots of animals to be seen...the rhinos were running about and looked like they would head for the safari trucks.. the lady behind me said to her husband" Good thing those rhinos are not real!!!" LOL
