Hi We will be doing our first cruise in June (7 day Western) and I wondered if most people dress up for the pirate party. I know we can't bring along costumes since of luggage restrictions but I was thinking I could buy a t-shirt for the four of us at the Pirates ride at DW prior to the cruise. Is this a good idea or should I just leave everyone in their evening outfits and not worry about the shirts.

Thanks for the imput
Joan

yes a LOT of people dress up and do it in a BIG way! If you are staying somewhere the night before the cruise just box up your costumes and ship them to your hotel! That is if you want to dress the part!

You won't be out of place either way. Some people go all out with the costumes, others don't dress up at all....many are somewhere in between. The t-shirts will be fine.

We are def. going to dress up. I found a young boy's costume for just $10. Best friend Ben is going as my parrot. Yep, we are not right.

we just did a 4 night cruise in March. We dressed it up to the hilt. We actually had one suitcase that was almost entirely just pirate gear.

I would say that although many do dress up, it was well less than half of the people that dressed up.

I am on the April 25 cruise to Tortola and I can say I dressing up as is the person going with me. Our costumes are packed as is the accessories. I am curious as to why the OP says they can't bring costumes?

The way I figure it this is Disney and when will I ever get to go on other crusie again and I am makign the most of it.

Ok, so it sounds like many people dress up and I would like to as well. However, I don't want to spend a lot of money on a costume. Any suggestions how to make a simple pirate like outfit (or costume) without spending lots of money doing it? My husband, MIL and 4yo daughter would love to know as well (only they don't know it yet):rolleyes1

I'm in the same boat (no pun intended:lmao:) I found this site the other day. Give it a try or just google "how to make a pirates costume" or something alone that. Try this link and have fun.:goodvibes

If you're not wearing costumes- I think the shirts would work fine and you'd be "participating" without all the costumes and stuff. That's what we did on the last cruise and that cruise FOR SURE had a ton dressed up to the hilt in authentic looking costumes/etc. We just wore pirate shirts and then the bandannas they gave us but then we decided we liked our pirate goofy "hats' (if you want to call that a hat... it's basically a pirate bandanna with goofy ears hanging down that have big hoop earrings in them LOL)

You can dress up as little or as much as you want. If you don't want to dress up -don't. If you don't want to bring costumes- you can do the shirts if you want to somewhat participate without all the costumes. :)

I went to a few thrift shops and found puffy shirts (Seinfeld:lmao:) and a few velvet jackets (like Cap't Hook). We wore those with capris or jeans rolled up and bandanas.

Thank you all for these ideas. I guess I'm headin to the Goodwill this weekend. I love to go there, so no problems with that. I might find something else to buy for the cruise too:goodvibes

Lots of great ideas!! Thank you all for the help. We will most likely go with shirts of some type, youngest son (12) will likely take some extras to wear where as (13) yr old son I'm certain will only go with the least amount. DH and I will have to be creative since packing space is going to be limited. I'm sure it is going to be a blast each and every day no matter what we bring. Counting the days!! Thanks again!!

Hi Shelley

OP - prior to creating my Tia Dalma costume, I found a flowy black skirt and off the shoulder white top at the thrift store. I wore a corsett purchased from Torrid (in our local mall) over the top and wrapped a scarf around my head. It's very easy to be 'dressed' up but not full on costume.

You will find a good mix of folks dressed to the nines, folks who put at least some effort into it, and folks who didn't dress any differently. I go all out but that's just me. What other time, outside of Halloween can us adults play dress up? And DS13 may surprise you. That's my 13 yr old in the background on the right, blonde wig and eye patch.

Aye, they be the ones! (except it look like you turned your head right when the photo was taken? You were dressed up awesome too! Atleast I thought so. :) )

That was so cool... :woohoo:

We just wore pirate t shirts and I wore capris and my daughter wore a demin skirt

For my cruise next month I am doing the pirate t shirt and capris (plus my bandannas )

Here is what my boys wore on our first cruise:

I would totally pack stuff. This stuff was little, and easy to carry. The black belt things were just black cotton fabric, rolled up their jeans, and white undershirts. We got the eye patches at a party supply store.

The second cruise they were teenagers, not so willing to dress up. I found some pirate t-shirts at Walmart. They even had pink ones for my dd and I.

We used goofy ears too which were a big hit for our family. Just something cute. Would probably buy something like eyepatches to 'up the ante'...

Have fun and loads of laughs and enjoy those fireworks!!

I have to giggle at my own picture....my boys were sooo little then. They are big strappin' 6' teenagers.

BTW....Except for the swords, and the bird, we just left the stuff on the ship....leaving more room for souvies.
