We're down here now and fairly certain that my dh is coming down with strep...several of my kids had it before we left.

Where would be the best ( and closest) urgent care to go to?

If you go down Hotel Plaza Blvd - it's the curve on the right just past Downtown Disney...the way you'd go to get to Gooding's, if you've been there...

Anyway, if you take that to the end, but don't cross the street, turn L at the light, it is on your left. Only you can't turn into it. You have to pass it up, U-turn and then go back.

It has a long wait sometimes, but it is so wickedly close.

Good luck. Hope it all works out well!!!!

I was going to suggest the sme directions. If he can wait it out over night, they open at 8AM if I am remembering correctly. The lines are tremendously shorter when they open.

I think I went to the same Urgent Care the PP was talking about. When I went there were so many people waiting:sick: The way I got there is, exit disney via the dtd exit, make a left, it will be on your left. (this was 4 years ago so ask the consierge (I am sure I misspelled that) before you go. I was a CM, doing the disney college program when I had to go to Urgent Care. I was running a 103 fever, and my throat hurt so bad that I couldn't even swallow water. Anyway, the receptionist told me it was going to be a 3 hour wait, I asked her if I could put my name on the list and come back, and she said that was fine, just let her know when I was back, and to be back within 3 hours. I drove home, took a two hour nap, and came back. After about 20 minutes, they called me in. It was still another hour before the doctor came in to see me. If they tell you it is going to be a long wait, ask if you can put your name on the list and come back. A two hour nap in the hotel room, sure beats 2 hours in the waiting room!

The podcast crew just talked about this, they said avoid that Urgent Care center. Go to the nearest hospital, the front desk can give you directions, and you will be seen much sooner.

I didn't listen to the most recent podcasts, but if they said you should go to an Urgi-care place for chest pains, they're dead wrong.

If you have chest pain, you need to go to a hospital. If it is a heart attack, an urgi-care can't help you. I don't even think they can run blood and they certainly don't have cath labs.

I've been to this particular urgi-care a few times and it is fine for sore throats, coughs, etc. There are some urgi-cares that get scary in Florida, though. One in particular in Kissimmee that was downright frightening.

I'm not the expert on Floridian health care, but this place is just fine if you have a sore throat or some run-of-the-mill minor problem. And if you have chest pain anywhere, you belong in a hospital, preferably a hospital with a cath lab where they do stent placement.

I have a hard time believing that the podcasters would suggest Urgi-care for chest pain...but if they did, they should stop giving any sort of medical advice immediately.

I think the podcast was making a joke about the long lines you will have to endure if you go to urgent care. Notice they said a hospital will care for you much quicker. They weren't really telling you to go there if you think you're having a heart attack...

this one is really always very crowded- there is another one a little further out that you can ask the hotel how to get to and that might help with the time wait.

We had to go to this same urgent care in December. I went on Sunday morning (got there before they opened) and only waited 15 minutes. I was in and out in about 45 minutes and the doctor was really great.

My DH and DS had to go the next day and, unfortunately, they had about a 2 hour wait.

If you can afford it, I would avoid that Urgent Care and go to Celebration ER. We took our son their with a bleeding head wound (no chance of concussion) and waited 2 1/2 hours and we finally went to the Celebration ER. There were so many sick people in Urgent Care, I was afraid of picking up some other disease, more so than in a doctor's waiting room. It did not seem very clean at all.

An ER for strep? Really?

This is why the ERs in our country are so backed up and overcrowded.

Go to Urgent Care. I've been, it's really not that bad.

Where would be the best ( and closest) urgent care to go to?

We were there in October and daughter go ear infection. We went to the CVS Minute Clinic about 10 minutes away. We were seen within 15 minutes and out with our prescription within an hour. They are more than capable of diagnosing strep and filling prescription all in one stop!!! Good luck!!!

Forgot to mention -- it was also very cheap. I think we paid $65.00 for the visit (which was later reimbursed by our insurance). Cheap & fast is perfect combo :)

This is the urgent care center the PP's gave you directions for http://www.centracare.org/Locations/LakeBuenaVista/tabid/14614/Default.aspx

A map is on the webpage.

I have used this facility twice, and waited about an hour each time (YMMV).

If you are staying at an on-site resort, your DH can go to concierge and they will call Centra Care to send a van to pick him up. Transportation to the Centra Care and back to your resort is free. If/when your DH is seen and the doctor prescribes medication, Turner Drugs is located in the same building. Turner does not accept insurance, but I submitted the receipt for the Z-Pack antibiotic I was prescribed to my insurance company and I was reimbursed for the amount they would have covered.

I was very pleased with the care I received.

I had to visit Centra Care twice during the same trip, 4 days apart for two separate issues (THAT was an interesting trip). I was starting to think Centra Care should issue FastPasses or sell a pin for frequent visitors.

ETA - Unlike Turner Drugs, Centra Care accepts many insurance plans.

I don't know about Florida, but our hospital has a walk in clinic right along with the ER. And, IMHO, if you are having chest pains, you shouldn't drive anywhere, you should dial 9 1 1.

We used that Lake Buena Vista Urgent Care a year ago. I realize that Turner drugs doesn't take insurance because it would be a pain dealing with so many out of state plans, but that would be true at any tourist destination. We didn't fill our RX's, but if we did we would have gone to a chain drugstore that took insurance.

Then after the trip we got the doctor bills and they incorrectly overcharged. I had to contact them twice before getting it resolved. Was it an honest mistake - dunno.

We might consider using them if necessary on future trips but they won't be our first choice.

If you have trip insurance you can also have a doctor come to your room. My son was very sick last June with strep and an ear infection that we called a doc to the room. We did have to pay $250 upfront on our credit card but we were reimbursed before the bill even came to the house. We only did this because he was also throwing up and didn't want any accidents in the rental car.
