(CLOSED) The Smoking DSA's @ Resorts Info Thread

actually, It is NOT great that they have removed many DSAs. It makes it harder for smokers to abide by the rules. yes, WE will still obey the rules and smoke only in DSAs, but many smokers will not if it becomes way too inconvenient. (just like disney did a study about how long a person will carry a piece of trash before throwing it on the ground, and located the trashcans accordingly)
therefore, eliminating DSAs actually will make it worse for nonsmokers!

most ARE out of the way. the one they took away that surprised me was the one by Mouse Gear in Epcot. (with the fountain view) that one was WAY out of the way of the main "travel" path.

ITA! We will still follow the rules, but the last few trips I've seen more & more people smoking while they walk thru the park. I really hope Disney will "hear" us and put the DSA's back where they were and with better signs. It's best for both smokers & non-smokers.

I just spent a day at Busch Gardens Williamsburg and their smoking areas were very clear, large red signs (probably 2' x 3') that said "Designated Smoking Area", there were also announcements made that the DSA's were located near/in the area of all restrooms.

Busch Gardens Williamsburg is great about that. They keep the park extremely clean and family friendly. It is a great atmosphere!

Alright everybody - The resort board mods are willing to give this a try. This is the thread to discuss the designated smoking areas at the resorts for the resorts board.

1. No fighting, name calling or debate on the merits of smoking.

it clearly states NO debate on the MERITS of smoking.
I truthfully wish Disney would ban smoking completely from their property.

this would only make smokers smoke ANYWHERE instead of DSAs.

I was a smoker for my first visit to WDW in 2002 and found that there where so many DSA's that I think I smoked much more than normal because of the fear of "do not know when I will see the next DSA". I have since quit smoking and was back to WDW this year with a friend who smokes. He too found more than enough DSA's in the parks and at the resort (SSR). What concerns me is I can not count how many times I saw people smoking while wondering through the parks. They truly seemed like they had no regard for the smoking policies. I think the cast members need to crack down on enforcing the smoking policy. I would also like to see WDW move the DSA's further off the main paths. Many are on the side of a path were there is no other way around. The cloud in Animal Kingdom at the roller coaster was amazingly thick. Fun to see from across the lake because it looked like fog on the mountain but no fun for everyone walking to Dino land because you have to go straight through it.

I am not debating the merits of smoking. I was simply providing background for my statement pertaining to DSA's.

A property owner is within their rights to ban smoking on their property. Properly enforced that would mean smokers would be able to smoke NOWHERE on Disney property.

That same property owner is also well within their rights to allow smoking everywhere on their property, except of course where that would conflict with local law, but don't even get me started on that subject. I am 100% AGAINST any law telling property owners what they can and cannot do with THEIR property.

I knew the intention of the post would wander from the purpose intended to soapboxing and preaching about smoking.

Isn't there a link somewhere to report off-topic posts to the mods? If so, I couldn't find it. I'd really hate for this helpful thread to be closed. It's been ongoing for over a year with limited disruptions, and I'd like to see it continue that way. If a poster isn't here to discuss the DSA's within the guidelines set out in post #1, IMO they shouldn't even be reading it.

It is not. And you are correct, I was not around in 2007. If it is the opinion of the moderators that my post is "destructive" then I would prefer they delete it rather than the entire thread.

The moderators may want to reword the first post in this thread to ensure it is clearly understood that only the opinions of those in favor of DSA's are welcome in this thread.

If I had understood that I would not have written my post...

And to clarify - I did not give my opinion about smoking - I posted my opinion on DSA's.

Martin

Actually, you didn't post an opinion on DSAs. You gave your opinion on smoking. Period. This thread is to discuss Designated Smoking Areas (DSAs) at Walt Disney World Theme Parks and Resorts, not to debate the merits of smoking or not smoking. Nor is it a place to push your opinions/feelings on other people.

I use this thread to find the latest information on locations of DSAs, as I think most of the rest of the subscribers on this thread do. If you have any information on the location of DSAs, then fantastic. I welcome any new information.

Personally I have reported this post as off topic and i have asked the mods to delete the post and all replies dealing with it ( including this one ).

Lets not have the entire thread ruined debating the rights and wrongs of the post, lets just get it and the replies deleted and then get back to the civilized discussion on DSA locations that we have been enjoying.

While we are discussing the proposes of this thread I have a question. Is this the place for non-smokers to discuss how the policy is being enforced? What to do if a person is, for example, smoking on a balcony, or what to do if a smoker is smoking outside of a DSA in a park? If not, where can these things be discussed. As a non-smoker with medical issues I would really like to be able to understand what to do in situations lile these. Why would it be okay to discuss how to follow the policy but not what to do when the policy is not being followed?

NO, it is to discuss the DESIGNATED SMOKING AREAS (DSA'S) anything else regarding smoking would only cause more debate and above posters have stated, this has been kept civil and we hope it will continue to be.

Okay - but isn't discussing how DSAs are being enforced discussing DSAs? And if its not - where do we discuss that issue? If the answer is "we don't" then it feels pretty discriminatory against non-smokers.

BTW - I want a civil discussion as well. I just want a civil discussion about what to do as a person who has trouble with medical issues due to cigerette smoke

It is about the LOCATION of the DSA's. Which ones have moved or changed. While I'm sorry for your health circumstances, I am afraid if you start a topic regarding that it will be dicey. That topic has been discussed till the cows come home and still doesn't say civil.

As far as discimination, this is a private board, the mods decide what stays and what goes.

If you see somebody smoking outside of a DSA and you feel it is going to effect your immediate health then by all means report it to a cast member and the situation will be dealt with, you would be well within your rights to do this. A possible example of this situation would be somebody smoking on their balcony and the smoke is blowing into your room.

Just be aware that not all DSA's are posted as such, for example Saratoga Springs allows smoking outside every building but management there have also stated that you can smoke while walking on any of the paths around the property. This is not something that is written on any signposts and this is the main purpose of this thread, to discuss the DSA's and their locations and changes.

I think you will find that this thread welcomes both smokers and non-smokers alike as long as they abide by the rules stated in the first post.

Just a reminder, this thread is not for debating the merits of smoking or drinking. If it happens again the posts will be removed and you may remove points.

I agree. well said.

thank you. on with the originally scheduled program!:woohoo:

3. My post is not off topic - I posted a very specific comment on DSA's backed up by factual statements about my life.
Yes, it is off-topic. This thread is, once again, to discuss the LOCATIONS of Designated Smoking Areas at the Disney hotels (actually resorts, but it appears referring to them as resorts confuses the issue and gives DISers the impression this thread exists to post the merits or opinions of smoking).
