(CLOSED) The Smoking DSA's @ Resorts Info Thread

I am an Ex Smoker and I know how bad it smells. I would reccommend renting a camper a staying at Fort Wilderness you can smoke in your camper or outside on your campsite ;)

to me, camping is not a vacation. (my idea of "roughing it" is a room without television!:lmao: ) as often as we go to disney, they welcome our money at all the resorts. we will continue to book onsite, in resorts (not camping), and use the DSAs. and thank you for all you people who took the time to post pics of the DSAs!!!

(ps, this is a thread for people to share info about DSA's; NOT about the merits of smoking)

I refuse to stay at another Disney "regular" resort until the ease up on the DSA issue. We are regulars at the Poly, and while the DSAs are plentiful, as I posted last year in this thread, I won't stay there again.

Since, we have been to FW - yes, FW, and stayed in the cabins. Hardly roughing it :) They're not deluxes, but they're nicer, IMHO, than the mods or the values, plus, they really are free standing cabins and you don't have to worry about noise from your neighbors. I certainly wouldn't call it roughing it.

The best part is you can smoke on your deck. So, while Disney has pretty much lost our hotel business altogether, when we decide we want to stay on property, it's the cabins for us.

Perhaps you should take a better look at FW, it always looked like a fun place with lots to do, and after staying there, I can confirm that it is :)

FWIW - cabins always used to be available, even during busy times. I suspect alot of other smokers have now made this their resort of choice on property and now it's getting harder to book one.

Just returned from the WL. We had a fantastic room on the 6th floor looking right at the MK we could see the fireworks every night it was truly awesome. But like I posted previously even though we had an awesome view in all 8 of our nights there there were only 2 nights in which there was anyone out on their balconies besides us and in the early morning hours the only other person I noticed out on the balcony was someone about 3 rooms down from us who was out there smoking:scared1: . So as far as I'm concerned the policy just doesn't make sense. I can understand not smoking in the rooms but the patios and balconies just baffles me, if there is no one around to be bothered by the smoke then what's the problem. I really hated having to walk all the way to the pool bar or the arcade to smoke. We have 3 small children so once they were asleep at night or before they were awake in the morning this was a real pain and DH and I were forced to go alone so so someone could be in the room with the kiddos. We've been seriously considering buying into the vacation club but I'm not so sure I am going to be happy with having to leave my room and go off by myself to smoke. Like DH said while we were there "I would love to just be able to quit and not even have the current situation be a consideration but that's just not going to happen overnight". I really wish Disney would reconsider. I really feel that if they would make a specific section of the hotel smoking optional outside only (patios/balconies) it would solve a lot of problems.

Are those the only DSA's at WL?

To be honest I think there is supposed to be one more at the main entrance but I never really paid much attention. Bottom line there are 3 at the most only 2 that I know of and definately not what I would call convenient.

Thank you for this thread! We are traveling for the first time with a smoker and I had no idea where to find out about the DSAs on DW resorts.

We have reservations at POR and I'm looking at the resort map. It looks like there are DSAs everywhere in the south end of Magnolia Bend area (bldgs 90 and 95 have five!), but there are only five in the entire Alligator Bayou area. Is this actually the case?

(I'm wondering if maybe the scale of the map is skewed and that the Alligator Bayou area might be smaller than it appears on the map-- justifying fewer DSAs.)

Thanks again!

Just returned from POR Mansion Section Oak Manor. When I went to check in they gave me a second floor room and I nicely stated that I was traveling alone with a 7 yr old and if they could put me on a first floor near a smoking section that would be greatly appreciated, I would even wait until the room was clean (We arrived at 11:30 am), the room they had for me was already ready. The nice person found a room on the first floor and quite near the smoking section - you could see it from my room 9059. The smoking areas around here were quite pleasant, seating under trees, ash tray and a view of the hotel grand steps or the river. When I wanted a smoke at the pool, I made my son get out of the pool and I discretly (making sure no other guests were around that I would bother) left the pool area to the sidewalk area. I also threw my buts away appropriately. There were people smoking around the pool area around other people.

yellowxterra was not talking about disney cabins. this posters said 'rent your OWN camper... smoke in your OWN camper".
we would consider DISNEY'S cabins at FW. we did, in our researches, rent a golf cart and tooled around FW, just to check it out. it DOES look fun. but... there is just the 2 of us.(not worth the money) maybe if we went in the future with the kids and grandkids. but, gee, we just love the ambience of the resorts. we're just not "cabin" kinda people. we spent our whole childhoods with our parents renting "cabins" in wisconsin (we're from Illinois). we LIKE hotels. makes us feel "rich". if I want to rent a cabin, I'll drive 2 hours north, not 22 hours south!:rotfl: but I'll do it, if it's the only way I can get my grown kids to come to Disney with us!!!:rotfl2:

but I will continue to book at disney resorts, and smoke. (in dsa's, of course). there are some who think smokers should only be allowed in their own campers or RVs. and nowhere else. but this thread is for us considerate smokers to share info about DSAs at ALL the Disney resorts.

That's very kind of you to suggest... but it's not in keeping with the theme of this thread - which is where the resort DSAs are.

Ft. Wilderness IS a Disney resort, and the Ft. Wilderness DSA's are: on the porch of your cabin, and anywhere on your camping site.

There are also several public area DSAs. To name a few: There is one near each pool, one near the nightly movie and campground. One or two near Pioneer Hall, one near Settlement Trading Post, one near Meadows Trading Post, one near the Outpost Checkin area, and one near Mickey's Backyard Barbecue

To a certain extent, I agree. I don't mind camping, but don't call it a vacation.

The Disney cabins are nicer than most cabins I've been in and the maids come and wash your dishes and cleanout the BBQ. That makes it more "hotel-y" to me. I love the fact that smoking is still allowed on the decks. If we continue to travel with a smoker, I see many cabin stays in our future travels.

Thanks for this information. It's good to know that our friend's first trip to DW won't be tainted by the smokers' rules.

I will still stay on site and do my best to abide by the smoking rules! I stay at Pop and haven't found it too bad .I kinda enjoy the big DSA near Classic> Had lots of convwrsations with other smokers I probably wouldn't have met if not for the new rules. I do however wish they would allow balcony smoking even if only on the top floors!!

That is great that you got such a close room to the DSA. I took my kids last year myself, but it was before the new rooms.

If I knew that I could get a room so close to the DSA (where I could see the room) then I might be more likely to go by myself with the kids.

My DH & I are smokers. We have been to WDW 5 times since May 07. In fact I made 2 trips recently, 5/29 for a week and 6/12 for the weekend. This is an example of the last 20 years. We love WDW and want to return. The cigarette smoking issue is one we have learned to deal with. We always go to DSA's and never leave a mess. This has meant we do not eat any meals inside while at a resort (too much trouble to eat in room then go back down for a smoke) and leave a park restaurant asap (that cigarette is dessert). I know cigarette smoke is offensive to some. My oldest daughter grew up with athsma. No, we did not give up smoking, and no, we did not smoke outdoors. The family dealt with it the same as we dealt with any other problem. Back to the subject. WDW has tried to accommodate the non-smokers that have complained so much by practically banning cigarette smoking from their property. I have seen enough smokers and talked to many. I have concluded that if a resort were built similiar to the AllStar resorts specifically for guests and their families who would prefer a location designated for smokers, I believe that resort would stay filled as much or more than the current restricted AllStars. An AllStar type resort would be a good level for starters. If the idea becomes popular, add a larger (moderate) resort. WDW will need to do something besides offering extra magic hours to resort guests if the economy continues to decline. In fact more people may start smoking as a coping mechanism for frustration as prices go higher but income doesn't.:rotfl2: If a family is going to save all year for a WDW vacation, al least mom and/or dad should be comfortable for all the money they forked over so the children can keep up with the Joneses children. Any body else with a better idea?:smokin:  :smokin: :surfweb: :smokin: ;) :smokin:

I have always said that the Top floors should be allowed to smoke on balconies. This to me would be fair all round, as smoke rises!! I am sure the top floors would be full all the time. I too smoke in the DSA's and haven't had too much problem with it , but it would be nice to step out onto the balcony!!

Did you stay at ASMo? We'll be staying there in October (we've requested the Buzz building) and I asked for our room to be as close as possible to a DSA. I'd love to be able to ask for a specific area of the building or, even better, a specific ground floor room, so if you have any input, it would be much appreciated! :goodvibes

FWIW, I agree that WDW should make the top floor balconies smoking or make a building smoking - or something!

What if a non-smoker likes the view from a hotel and wants to be up high (like at the comtemporary)? I'm actually glad that Disney prevents balcony smoking as I really like sitting on the balcony and can't do so if some one is smoking due to medical issues

Can we please keep this thread to just DSA location and keep your personal opinions out of it..

This is just for DSA information otherwise it will be shut down

This thread is NOT to debate the subject

I for one have not seen anyone debating if smoking should or should not be permitted. I HAVE seen some discussion on what may make a good DSA (for example the top floor of hotels). Additionally, the bulk of discussion has been on the current location of DSA's and information on how to find/use them.

YMMV
