(CLOSED) The Smoking DSA's @ Resorts Info Thread

Thank you for the illuminating post, Liljam. It'll be interesting to see how things develop as they go forward.

If what you were told is the actual, site-wide policy, then things will be interesting for the non-smokers, to say the least.

In Feb at Pop I asked a CM if I could smoke on the pathway near my room there was a bench. I was told I could smoke there and no ashtray. Everyday CM went by and smiled and waved as I was smoking!!I think as long as it's not in the rooms or on the balconies they don't care. So if a non smoker complained How could Disney say anything when they arem saying it's OK!!

That all said, I would be curious to find out if others have been told this as well. Not once did a CM or a fellow resort guest stop anyone in our party and tell them they could not smoke.

We checked into POP a few days after the rule change. I had asked for "near a DSA" on my room request. When we checked in, I asked her where the nearest DSA was and she pointed on the map to the little circle right outside our room (a bit away from the rooms, not quite to the parking lot). I asked her if she was sure, because I knew from the maps on the DIS that it wasn't a smoking area.

We used it because were were told to use it. There was no bench or ashtray, but there were also no people and we picked up our butts and flushed them in the toilet.

The path just happened to be next to the route all of the CMs took, and 90% of them said nothing--even smiled and said HI as they passed. One CM said something but then when I explained what the CM checking in had told me, went about her business. Another CM got all in my husband's face and threatened a fine. After that we started moving toward the "real" DSA that was much further away.

All and all it was frustrating because of the mixed information we received. I know how Liljam feels, because I was encouraging my husband to follow the rules, too, yet many others didn't (the pool area at night--forget it!) and the CMs had different views of the rules. This was a year ago, and I would've thought it would be more clear now!

For what it's worth, though, DH and I are five months quit and are going to celebrate our six months quit at WDW without any worries about DSAs and the like! :dance3: But a warning--I may just turn into one of those cranky x-smokers because now the smell makes me slightly ill-so stay to your DSAs!

In September, I asked a CM where I could smoke and she said, "Anywhere". Just then, her supervisor came by and she asked him. He said, "No", and took me around to show me a couple of (relatively) convenient DSAs.

Another CM got all in my husband's face and threatened a fine.
Interesting. The paperwork we sign when checking in indicates there is a fine for smoking in the rooms. I'm not aware of any fine, or penalty, for smoking outside but not in a DSA?

I have a question please. I will be staying at Pop for my first solo trip this December. I am paying for prefered. Does anyone know what section would be close to a DSA?
TIA,
Krissy

I will be at POR-mansions section. May 28-june 3, I have a little guy with me alone. I have requested being near a DSA, I do hate to have to drag my little guy out every time I want to smoke (which is not a lot), are there any close that I can view my door and my guy can see me (parking lot????)
thanks

Sorry if someone has already posted this, but I found last week that at least two of the designated DSAs I used last September at AK aren't there any more. I finally asked a CM and he directed me to one behind the restrooms between Asia and Africa, which was not marked at all until you went around back (and it isn't on the map).

I am an Ex Smoker and I know how bad it smells. I would reccommend renting a camper a staying at Fort Wilderness you can smoke in your camper or outside on your campsite ;)

Here are some photos I took of DSA's at the Poly in early May:

Outside Captain Cook's:

More Poly DSA's:

The bridge between Niue to Rarotonga. The whole thing seemed to be a DSA. It was partly covered and partly open and very large:

There were a lot of other DSA's on the map that I didn't go see. We were only at the Poly for breakfast at the Kona Cafe, but I took a walk around to see where the DSA's were because we'd like to stay there on a future trip. There weren't any along the beach or around the concierge buildings that I could find, which was disappointing. It seemed like most of the ones I saw were getting a lot of use.:smokin:

That's very kind of you to suggest... but it's not in keeping with the theme of this thread - which is where the resort DSAs are.

Thanks,

Just the information we need to help us make our decision about returning or staying off property again this year.

Last time we stayed, as we were walking back from the boat dock one night, I saw people smoking at the pool bar. I don't know if that's a DSA or not, but for the sheer numbers I'm guessing the bartender didn't mind. Now, this was back in November- maybe it's changed, but FWIW, that's the nearest I saw to the beach.

We saw that one last fall at night, but when I was there in the daytime this trip I saw no sign designating it as a DSA and no ashtrays. It was early in the day and the bar wasn't open yet. Maybe it's only a DSA when the bar is open? Just a guess. Anyway, I looked around the area and saw no sign of it being a smoking area, legitimate or otherwise.

Some more CR DSA's:

The tables under umbrellas lining the railing by the beach on the way to the quiet pool:

If you turn to the right before entering the doors in the above photo, there is this large plaza which is also designated as a smoking area outside the Convention Center:

There was also a large ashtray at the side entrance to the South Wing, but no place to sit.
