OK. Lately I've been, well....a bit principled. HA. I'm having a rough time w/ some things about the American way of life. Like the way the CPSIA is hurting hard working WAH moms and dads. and the way EVERYTHING we buy is from China. :confused3 A friend of mine called the CPSIA the "Buy a Bunch of New Stuff from Walmart Act" I have to agree it seems that way. Also, I've been on a red meat boycott. I've only been buying Organic beef b/c it is usually (and only if it is ) GRAIN FED MID WESTERN U.S. BEEF. Cause I'm pretty sure that the US cattle supply is enough to keep us fed without importing beef from canada (which I'd trust...it's just a matter of principle) or MEXICO (which I don't)

UGH!!! So add that to my hubby saying "this is from China" every time we're about to make a purchase and it's enough to drive me mad.

Now I know the fact of the matter is that there are probably a million other things that I'm not boycotting (like the chinese apples in Motts Apple juice...like we don't grow apples here!?!?)or don't realize is imported....and by all means I'm not against imported products (french wine, italian cheese...) BUT american companies that produce their goods in China instead of bringing those jobs here is another thing.

With that very long winded rant I'll get to the point. I've been trying to make (and yes I realize the fabric I buy is PROBABLY made in china too, I can only do so much people) more stuff at home. Clothes (as deemed appropriate by the wearer...my DH is NOT gonna wear handmade pants. Hey Carla, Can I get the Easy Fit pattern in a mens 36? :rotfl2: )
Food (check out the recipe for Strawberry Jam in Stephres blog!!! YUMMO!) and even Laundry detergent ( I found a recipe that works and turns out to be about $0.02 per load...rounded UP)

Yeah, I'm probably crazy and it'll probably pass. But while I'm searching for useful things I can make instead of buy I'm coming across some GREAT ideas.
This isn't a free pattern but it is the CUTEST ring toss I've ever seen. It's by Heather Bailey. I can't wait to make it!!! And I bet a few of you fabulous seamstresses wouldn't even need a pattern (those of you who know me know I NEED a pattern)

I have a girlfriend due the day before me. She has the kind of family that she and the baby are not going to be wanting for ANYTHING so what do you give someone like that??? Well, I'm glad you asked. We are both going to cloth diaper our new little ones, so I'm making her a few cute dipes. Also I'm going to make her some soft blocks(free pattern on michaelmillerfabrics.com), this ring toss and have my MIL. crochet her an amigurumi teddy bear (or other such animal) I am also looking forward to a cute vintage inspired outfit using Carla C's pattern trifecta bundle( in the new 6 mo size) w/ booties(free pattern at Heather Bailey's blog HELLO MY NAME IS HEATHER or michaelmillerfabrics.com OR probably in the bookmarks if I know Teresa) and a beret.

Really I just wanted to share this really great ring toss idea...I got lost in the beginning though, sorry!

ETA: Read China as China, Mexico, Indonesia, Korea....any where that isn't here in America where we need jobs and you know grow apples and beef cattle. (I think the apple juice Lily had at McDonalds the other day listed like 6 possible countries the apples may have come from ????

I think my sister's procrastination is starting to rub off on me because I just finished sewing yesterday! I decided to make Sawyer a Peter Pan t-shirt so he and Tessa will wear something matching every day. It only took about 1/2 hour because I used Jessica's applique method (I used a spaced apart zig zag stitch instead of a tighter satin stitch). It worked great! This is for MK tomorrow.

I also made a Pinocchio shirt for Sawyer. The boy LOVES Pinocchio right now! I don't know if you can read the words on it, but it says "REAL boys wear Lederhosen". :rotfl2: :rotfl: He's wearing this to Epcot for the Dismeet and Tessa is wearing the multi-princess dress (okay, they don't exactly match this day).

Here's the Buzz Lightyear outfits that they both wore to Sawyer's birthday party last year. They still fit! I'm not sure where they're wearing these yet.

Jessie and Woody! I used CarlaC's vest pattern for Sawyer's Woody vest. It was incredibly easy!! I didn't put buttons on it, so it was really fast, too. CastleCreations made Tessa's adorable Jessie outfit (she's not wearing the belt in the picture, but she'll wear it in the parks). They're wearing these to DHS.

They're wearing these Dumbo outfits to MK on Wednesday. The Chip/Dale/Clarice outfits are for AK on Thursday.

I made Tessa this Littlest Pet Shop outfit a few days ago. It was such a relief to just make something simple (the skirt).

Thanks for the shout out! It's a hard balance between what is convenient and what is good so thanks for you reminding us. That Heather Miller is awesome! I made a pincushion from her website (it was free) for my mom and she loved it. She showed it off to all her friends! She is an excellent writer/explainer of stuff.

Megan is not getting her homework done and I am not getting anything done either because we can't stop looking at the cute outfits! Loved all Heather's ensembles (Sawyer is so strong, she says) and Morgan is so cute with the puppy. Ok, back to work!

The outfits are all adorable Heather! I am so jealous you're getting to go and meet everyone - even though I am a little :scared1: of doing that. What if you don't like me? :rotfl: Even though I laugh about it, it does worry me!

Can someone tell me which pattern has the ruffles on the straps. I think it is probably the simply sweet but I figured you'll would know and respond faster then I could dig through! Thanks!

Simply Sweet, you're right!

Tiffani! I am so glad you are back with us! :cheer2: I have missed you. I hope you're feeling better. I agree with the buy American. We try and do it whenever possible. And as far as the meat thing, we buy from a local farmer. He's not certified organic (the certification process is $$$) but his meat is organic. You should try and find a local farmer you can buy from. It is really amazing how it all tastes different than something you buy from a store. Makes you kind of wonder why? I like that I am buying from someone who doesn't use genetically enhanced animals (most of his beef, chicken, pork and turkey products are considered "heirloom" or "heritage" species), his animals are grass fed (on organic crops), and those that do get feed are fed organic feed, plus he takes really good care of his animals and treats them well (you can go to his farm and buy and tour or you can purchase from him at the farmer's market). And I feel like I am doing my part environmentally since it is a local farmer and not being shipped cross country. Some of his meat and eggs are more expensive than what you pay in the store but a lot of it is actually cheaper. It all kind of works out in the end.

WHAT?!?!?! i just missed a coop buy for that??? Of all the luck!! I really am so excited that I found that pattern, I can't wait to make it (of course I still need to buy the pattern)

I am feeling 100% better Thank you so much for asking!! I needed a little time to take care of myself and learn a little balance. I'm LOVING learning to be a SAHM too!!!!

I am trying to find a local farmer for meat and eggs. We have a farmers market on Saturdays and there are local produce guys. We try to buy locally as much as possible (and try to avoid the Wal place at all costs) I prefer organic (of course who can afford all organic? Not me) but it's not a MUST with the exception of a few things (like milk) but when I'm in the store and it's meat possibly from mexico or AMERICAN organic, then that is what I buy. Fortunately for my pocketbook DH thinks he has gout and is trying to modify his diet accordingly including cutting back on red meat, so I'm not buying much of it.
But thanks for reminding me that I should be looking harder!;)

And thanks for the warm welcome back. I missed you all too!!!

UGh what a night! We where watching the super bowl having a nice time. Half time rolls around I am all excited Bruce is on` I LOVE Bruce i have seen him live many times with my best friend usually in NJ since to us there really isn't any better place to see him then his hometown crowd. Any way. Nikki is watching the half time with me and she starts feeling this dripping on her head:scared1: So I am thinking ok kid sure just be quiet Bruce is on! :rotfl: Well she was right! the ceiling started dripping ALOT!:scared1: :scared1: Well turns out my rocket scientist son 'forgot' UGH to shut off the faucet in the bathroom up stairs when he was brushing his teeth so he flooded the bathroom!:headache: :headache: So George freaks out sends him to bed as he is cleaning up the bathroom. So I had to put 3 large pasta pots down on my 10 + yr old floors along with lots of towels. Then we prayer the 100+ yr old plaster didn't totally break! :confused3 Thankfully it stopped leaking and will take awhile to dry. In the end no real damage that we can see was done. We think this must have happened before because we could always tell that the ceiling in the living room had been patched and had a crack. We figured since the house was built in 1891 that was pretty good only having 1 crack in the ceiling!
Oh my goodness! That is just crazy. I can't relate.... yet... ;)
Finished my first A-line on the weekend. And of course a pair of easy fits to go with them.

Ta da... It is reversible too.

And a pair of flannel pyjamas.
Cute A line outfit!

I wonder if the Chung family ever wonders why their 2003 Family newsletter gets so many hits!

Oh my gosh! I swear I thought you could go to ycmt.com

Hey everyone, I've been lurking and I love all the new stuff! I'm nearing panic mode with all the stuff I need to do before we leave on our trip Saturday :hyper: My friend decided at the last minute that she wants some stuff for her kids too, so with my sister's kids, I'm trying to make outfits for 9 children. Let's just say everyone's getting a little less than I had originally planned. I'm going to have to crank out 9 Mickey head tees today. I spent forevery embroidering Perla last night only to have Lily knock the plug out when I had about 2 steps left and now I can't get the embroidery machine to work so I'll have to work on that too. And my camera broke. It was taking fuzzy pictures, then the USB port wasn't working (the cable was fine) then somehow it dumped over 900 pictures from the memory card. They are GONE. I'm hoping I didn't lose too many. I usually upload them to the computer but I don't always get every photo. Oh well, can't think about it now. Fortunately I do have a backup camera even though it is the WORST camera for Disney. It has like a 5 second lag between photos so when you are taking character photos you can only get one. If I try for two, I can see the characters getting impatient! I have also had the most miserable cold, but I'm finally starting to feel human again. :cheer2: Just in time too! And today I get to take 2 kids with me to get the oil changed in my car! :scared:

I have some stuff to post, just no models. I did get Lily to model her Small World outfit though. I just got matchy bows from Jennwdw. She matched them from the photo. SO CUTE!

and yes, the paint is chipped on my baseboard. Luke was vaccuming the other day and ran into it and the corner piece popped out. Mike put it back in but the paint has not been fixed.

without petti:
Oh my gosh! I love it. I hope you are okay with me CASE'ing your small world outfit??? I bought the shirt, and found the fabric on ebay... ;)
I was wondering how a twirl skirt looks on. I love it. Looks great with the petti!!! I LOOOOVE the bows too. I have some Jen bows coming. I am so excited! She is so talented!

Ok, I have lots of questions for you! Where did you get the fabric with the faces on it for the skirt? And did you make that shirt or buy it?
I love the pic thing that you did with the cricut! :)
Have a good trip :)
It is called "Smiles around the world" by Alexander Henry and it is OOP. SOmeone here found some on :wizard: and I was lucky enough to get some.

th_100_0550.jpg

Next I made one with a solid skirt for my other DD8. It is a little bright for her but she said she would like to wear in to the TIKI Room:

th_100_0544.jpg

Next I had to make something for my DS7, so I attemtped the bowler shirt.....Still needs the buttons though!:rotfl: :

th_100_0545.jpg

Then I made a simple pooh one for DD5:

th_100_0546.jpg

Now I am working on two things. The first is a Mary Poppins shirt, skirt, and belt for DD5. I had left over material from her Jolly Holiday dress and I wanted to make her something that she could wear in early May when we go to Disney. It still needs a lot of work but, this is what I have so far:

The iron on transfers I made using some creative DIS board Disigners designs. I just used transfer paper, printed them out, and then iron on. Thank you for them DISigners!

So, what do you think? Thank you ladies for your inspiration!
Sorry, pics so big!
Everything looks soooo good! How did you crank out all that so fast??? I especially love yoru bowling shirt.

I've been away & am having a hard time catching up with all the posts! I just have to say I LOVE all the NBC stuff - SO awesome!! It's one of my favorite movies! I have gotten SO many ideas here for more & more dresses I want to make now before our trip in December! LOL Good thing it's a 10 night trip! ;)

I've been battling a cold & praying Maddie doesn't catch it - she hasn't been sick yet & I'd hate for her to get it now. But, I managed to finish my 3rd dress for her on Saturday:
Maddi is so adorable!!

Silly question....

How do you use your teflon sheet???? I got one, but not positive how to use it - i tried twice, and it got kinda melty - is that right???? it did stick a bit to an iron on, but I let it cool and it came off.....any tips?
Hrm... Is it the June Taylor one? I have the Clotilde one, and it didn't stick at all. I ironed the applique pieces directly onto it and it didn't stick at all... the iron that is. :-p

A quick pic from this weekend:

You can't really see it but she has on a dalmation tee to match the skirt.
Your DD is beautiful! What a great picture!

WOw... Your sewing skills amaze me!!
Have a great trip!!!

I'm working on smocking a Mardi Gras dress. Why do I torture myself??? I'm trying to have it finished by Saturday and I just finally started the smocking part last night.

See, I always try to buy organic milk because I am scared of all the hormones and antibiotics they give to the cows. Why do you not buy it T? I used to buy soy milk but I read that with the pesticides it is no more safer than cow milk (and plus the kids didn't really like it). It is so confusing!

I do use Plant City strawberries for my homemade jam when they are available. They are the best! :thumbsup2

Yep, hormones ( I am not prepared to handle a 9 yo w/ her monthly visitor:scared: )and antibiotics...plus I saw this thing about how much puss gets into regular milk, I don't remember the reasons why it happens but it grosses me out.
Kraft's 2% cheeses are all made w/ hormone and antibiotic free milk.
Why would you buy strawberries that WEREN'T from Plant City;) They are sweeter than california ones.
and at PUBLIX in the OJ section is organic OJ from Uncle Matts farm, it's in Clermont!!! Last time they had oranges from there in the greenwise produce section as well, but fruit w/ thick skins that you peel are FAR down my list of organic MUST HAVES.
However Peaches, strawberries and apples retain a LOT of pesticides....I had a really good veggie wash recipe but I lost it, I'll have to look it up. B just saw a list of the dirtiest foods (not neccesarily just pesticides) and peaches were like the WORST. They need to be thoroughly washed. Bagged salad was 2nd but not because it is paticularly dirty but b/c people think b/c it is bagged pre cut that is is clean and then don't rinse it. You have to wash ALL produce!

Lily eats apples almost every day so I almost ALWAYS buy organic apples, cause that's a LOT of apple eating. Peaches and strawberries are harder to find and therefore significantly more expensive (not to mention I rarely buy peaches anyway) so I buy regular ones try to wash them VERY well.

I'll find that veggie wash and get back to you!
...t.

I found it!!! This is why it stinks not having the internet at home. I bought peaches AND strawberries the other day and did not have this recipe on hand. I just used som dish soap (biodegradable-plant based) and gave them a good rinsing.

If you can't buy organic produce, you need to make sure you wash it thoroughly. Use this spray to make sure your fruit and vegetables are squeaky clean.

Ingredients:

1 cup water
1 cup distilled white vinegar
1 tablespoon baking soda
20 drops grapefruit seed extract
Combine all ingredients in a large container. Then, transfer to a spray bottle with a pump. Spray mixture on produce, and rinse thoroughly after 5 to 10 minutes.

*Grapefruit seed extract is available at your local health food store.

(be carefull...vinegar and baking soda DOES react like a volcano...use a large container and mix over the sink!!!)

This is from Sofie Uliano, the author of a book called Gorgeously Green. I recommend it to anyone who wants to beome more environmentally aware and is put off by the "all or nothing" mindset of some of the more crunchy books and websites. I had that problem in the beginning. I just didn't feel like I was green ENOUGH. Then I realized that recycling sometimes is better than never and buying SOME organic is better than none...if you buy stuff w/ the best impact on your family and the earth. She uses a step by step method to getting you into a green routine and shows you where the most bang for your environmental buck is too!

One of the other reasons I buy organic is to support people (farmers) who are trying to make a difference. Stonyfield Farms (dairy) uses and buys as much renewable energy as possible, works to offset their carbon emission and encourages recycling and using recycle products.

I don't have a lot of money. I can't usually make financial contributions to the people who are fighting for the things I believe in (like renewable energy and safe food!)...BUT I can spend the money I have w/ people who do. Like organic farmers who invest in renewable energy resources and Newmans Own (Paul Newmans grocery line...most famous for his dressing but has SO much more) They care about the environment and the products are all natural or organic and they donate 100% of the profits from their products.

See how powerful your dollars are if you spend them in the right places?

JEEZ....what is with the soap box today t?:mic:

Anyway, there you go...a great wash for those dirty peaches and your Plant City Strawberries, a plug for Sofie's book and tifani's why buy organic philosophy all in one post:blush:

WHAT?!?!?! i just missed a coop buy for that??? Of all the luck!! I really am so excited that I found that pattern, I can't wait to make it (of course I still need to buy the pattern)
LOL! Don't worry! They are always doing new buys;)

Thanks!!!

My hubby wouldn't say thanks though...
Mine isn't too thrilled I found it either. I had the screen up for the website the other day, and he said "It doesn't take a website for me to know you are obsessed with fabric." lol!

Between watching the LMT site refresh all day today, I did get a lot done. I finished the outfit for Jake. I took what I learned from the bowling shirt and used it in the shorts so they have Mickey fabric on the sides. I messed up the first few cutting and sewings but finally got it right.

I don't care much for the colours but is perfect for a little boy.

Yeah...t

Wow.

:thumbsup2

Just clarifying Steph - I think Tiffani was saying she always buys organic milk, not that she never does. T - jump in and correct me if I'm wrong.

Look at you!! April you just did your first Frankenpattern!!:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

The hormone thing is why we buy as much organic as we can afford/or is possible. I have a first cousin (she was a oops! baby - her Mom was 43 when she had her) who is 20+ years younger than I am. She underwent what is termed "precocious puberty" (the spelling might be wrong here). Basically she started puberty at the ripe old age of FIVE! I remember seeing her that summer and she was wearing a little sundress and she lifted her arm up and she had a whole armpit full of black hair. It was horrifying! Because she was so young her skin was very sensitive and her Mom couldn't shave it very frequently but if she let it go she was afraid of other kids making fun of her. It was really awful. Everything (yes - I mean everything) started developing. Aside from the trauma and inconvenience of taking care of a five year old girl going through puberty, there was also a concern about her growth. Since puberty is supposed to be the last growth spurt for a girl they were very concerned that this would stunt her growth. They could have given her more/different hormones that would have stopped it from continuing but there was no definite answer on how that would have affected her. And still there is a concern that since she started puberty so early that her fertility will be shortened and menopause early. Since she is just now 15 they don't know what her future will hold. Anyway, since she is my first cousin, and my pediatrician said there was no way of knowing what caused this to happen I decided that my kids were going to start out eating organic baby food. From there as they have gotten older I've just kept adding to the foods that I buy that are organic. Now pretty much we are all eating as much organic food as I can afford. And all of my girls have gotten organic baby food that I have made for them. Which if you're interested in it T - is pretty easy to make and a lot cheaper than they stuff you can buy in the stores.

OK.
