I have to say that I agree with you. Some of the people that are getting BIG GIVES are better off than some of us on here and some of them don't seem to appreciate the hard work that goes into the outfits.

How are the families being selected??

At least you had a pretty button to put on there. I think it came out great:thumbsup2

Yesterday was my DD's second birthday. I made her a little purse for her birthday:

Here is my attempt at a Marie cake:

IMGP3898.jpg

She loves "Kitty Marie". Her grandma bought that stuffed animal for her when we were in Disney World in the fall, and Ava still carries it everywhere.

I had some left-over fabric from the purse, so I put together a little pillowcase dress:

IMGP3957.jpg

We stuffed the purse full of little trinkets for her:

IMGP3960.jpg

My DH even made some play money to go in it:

IMGP3955.jpg

Anyway, we had fun. It was a great birthday. I can't believe my little girl is two, now. Not a baby anymore :sad1:

I have just to say that some of the families that have received items from the Big Gives don't have alot of free time to post. Some are dealing with medical issues, or just real life gets in the way. I know how that is.
To me, the best part is knowing that I gave of my own free time to make something special for a family. I hope that my little contribution will help make memories of their trip to last a lifetime.
I figure once the outfit leaves my door, it is up to the individuals what they want to do with it. Some people just aren't comfortable with posting pictures of their children, and I can understand that.
I have received PM's from some of the Gives that I have participated in, and do really appreciate that they took the time to do that. But, I don't expect them to.
JMO!

This one is just to prove that my DD does still exist! YES, she is asleep, and YES, she has on her PJ's. She wasn't too happy with me.

I LOVE this dress. She looks great in it, sleepy and all. I do not sew but I love this thread so I can see all of your gorgeous creations. Then I beg my seamstress (aka Auntie) if she will make something similar. Darla has banned me from this thread. She actually answered the phone the other day "yeas I saw that cute dress, find the fabric."

I made these bows for a birthday party my girls are going to today.

DSC02935.jpg

I made it to match this shirt for the Birthday girl.

DSC02936.jpg

The birthday girl is turning 7 but is small for her age. Because of that she does not like anything too young looking. Should I not give her the bows?
I also got her some Gymboree clothes.

What do you think are the bows to little girl?

I don't know. I think it has to do with how long until their trip.

If that is the only criteria maybe we can do a little something more, like an application/questionnaire or just be sure and ask that it is something they would like/use, etc??

I agree with Tom maybe the are overwhelmed with their child's illness and just don't have time, though maybe they are not ALL appreciating the hard work, or maybe taking it for granted?? I really don't know. This is my first big give that I am working on, and I would be ok without any thank you's, but I am only printing the iron-ons. But I can understand when you are sewing and putting all this effort a picture or quick PM would be nice. . .

I am not involved in the selection process but I am sure that there is some sort of application the families fill out. But families are approached by someone here to start the process. I am sure Teresa or Heather can explain it in detail.

Thank you for all your compliments on my DD's snow white dress! They are truly appreciated!

Question for all you smockers! Is there a good place site to learn to smock? I LOVE the look, but I'm very intimidated by the idea. Where do you even start? Any recommendations?
Actually there is a book that just got re-released called "Perfect Picture Smocking" I think. http://www.smocking.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=3507
I want to get it for myself because I am a self taught smocker. I've heard great things about the book. Let me know if you get it. I have all the Australian Smocking books on smocking. They don't have just a whole lot on picture smocking. THey do have all smocking stitches in there, but you really use that for geometric. You mostly use the same stitch over and over again for picture smocking. Sewing for Smockers and the regular smocking one by AS&E are 2 of my favorites though. I can't think of the exact titles right now. Pm me if you need them ever. :)

I messed up my multi quote, but really wanted to say I love love love the smocked Snow White. I just love that it's her with the animals!
Thank you! I think that is why I like it too. There is something so sweet about her with her little deer, racoon, and bunny!

This is beautiful!! Your smocking looks perfect. I had Jennifer (JenWDW) make some Snow White bows for us and they are one of my favorites from her!

IMG_1232.jpg
IMG_1212-1.jpg
Thank you for posting that! Thanks for the compliments too. I am going to tell Jen that I love your bow and to make it simliar! ;)
Did she include the centers?

I promised that I'd post pics of what I decided to do with the closure of the wrap dress. I had actually purchased a frog closure, but when I went to put it on, I couldn't find it. SO, I went with my second choice. Buttons. I also put in a snap at the neckline where it makes a "v" just to make sure that it doesn't gap. I have to say that it appears to be very secure to me. I don't think that we'll have any problems with it falling off! SO, here's the pics.

This one is just to prove that my DD does still exist! YES, she is asleep, and YES, she has on her PJ's. She wasn't too happy with me.

Awww.. she is so beautiful in that dress! I'm glad to know she exists! :rotfl:

In my old house we had that also. I put spackle or a filler in each groove then sanded it down and painted. I also put a bit of texture on the wall. It came out great and looked so bright and clean.
Thank you for the idea. would have never thought of that.

My sister only irons the part that shows. :lmao: This dress is so cute.
This is really a pretty dress. It came out great. :thumbsup2
thanks! This is how I mostly am. I hate ironing... I bought a jiffy steamer, so I don't iron much anymore except for when I am actually sewing and have to! :)

At least you had a pretty button to put on there. I think it came out great:thumbsup2

The bows look great! I am still not trying bows. I refuse! :snooty:

K, I really want to catch up on this thread. I really want to finish this dress though. We'll see which gets done. :)

Hello everyone! :wave2:

I have posted on these threads a couple times how much I LOVE all the outfits you make! Just wanted to let you know that my recently turned 10 year old dd just started sewing classes! She got a machine as an early birthday present and started last week. Today was her first class and so far so good. She was a bit discouraged as she has to take all the seams out of the pant leg she sewed today since it is not straight. I told her that the class was for learning and if she was an expert she would be TEACHING the class! :)

The teacher thinks part of it is that she and her friend are sitting across from a couple of older and more experienced girls. They can talk and sew, but dd & her friend (also a new sewer) need to be able to concentrate more. Dd loves the socialization part! ;)

I do hope that she sticks with it as I believe it is a good skill to have.

Thanks again for sharing all your wonderful work! :)

Jill

I've gone back through and looked at all the great work. Glad to know I'm not the only one who does this!

Here are some shots of outfits from our trip in 2007, when DD would allow me to make such a thing.

Hopefully I'll get some more made...
I found some lovely rhinestone iron ons of tink and minnie on etsy that I'm going to put on some shirts for her and I've got my bag to make...

I love that set and those bows are gorgeous.
First off.. I hate ironing. I refused to iron this dress twice in one night, so here it is all wrinkled and dirty after she wore it.

I made this back in November. I never take the time to take pictures of things to post. Hannah wore this to a party tonight, so I figured I should get some quick pics! I'm going to have to redo this dress because it is running pretty small on her right now. I'm just going to rip it apart and keep the smocking plate and start over. :scared: This was by far the hardest smocking plate I have done because I didn't have the smocking plate. I just had a picture of the smocking plate. Why oh why did I torture myself??? I had to make up alot of it as I went.
I plan on getting a Jen bow to go with this one. I think it needs one. The headband is cute, but she won't keep it on!

I hope to catch up later. Working on Valentine's dress. I digitized a cute Minnie and Mickey design and it came out way too small in my 5 by 7 hoop. It would look great if I had a larger hoop.
I think I am going to freehand applique. Heather tutorial here I come!
I love Snow White she is my favorite princess. Great job on the smocking.

That button is really pretty. I love the dress. That fabric is adorable. I am amazed that your DD is standing there sound asleep!

Ok here is Jenna's Valentine's Day outfit. Well one of them atleast. She picked some other fabric and I told her that I would make her another outfit with it. We have decided that hearts can be worn anytime of the year.
S2010248-1.jpg

I tried to get one of her twirling, but the wind is blowing too hard. She loves her outfit. She won't take it off and can't wait until we go get DH from work so she can show it off. I think when I make her another one I will make the size 8. This one is a little tight on her.
It turned out really pretty. YOu can wear it all year and maybe even wear it to Animal Kingdom.
Here is the decepticon shirt as promised to Hunter. I didn't use a satin stitch this time, just straight on white felt. The other is black flannel in satin stitch.
hunterwithDshirt.jpg

Now, I am putting all sewing away for the rest of the day and plan to just rest. I did finish my sundress and will get pictures up later. Next is the bowling shirts.
Great job on the applique. I think your little guy likes it!
Here is what I have been doing the past couple of days. I made another t-shirt dress. This one was only a xlg and not really long enough to make a real dress, I guess I could have added a ruffle. I lettuce edged the sleeves this time for a different look.

IMG_1079.jpg

Why is it so fuzzy? I'm sure it's not because of my superior photography skillz!

I really wanted Shannon's gymbucks, but we just went there and I am trying to restrain myself. Megan fell in love with this t-shirt so I cut up some of her jeans to make a whole outfit. She won't try it on cause she's mean today.

IMG_1084.jpg

And this is yesterday morning. She was excited to find frost on the ground, "just like Michigan!" I can't believe it got this cold way down here!

IMG_1083.jpg
My kids get excited about frost too! Especially when it is on the car windows. DD tried to take a frosty leaf to school. But the frosted melted in the car on the way there. :lmao: I got Abby a really cheap pair of shorts at Gymboree. Now I need to make a shirt to match.

What do you think are the bows to little girl?
I think the bows match perfectly. I don't think they look too young. As long as she is the kind of girl who likes bows I think she will like them.

I am looking for ideas for autographs. We did a pillowcase last time and that worked well but I am looking for something different. I do not want to do a book. I want something "practical," something Lauren might use. I would rather not do a t-shirt either. Any ideas?

Could you do an apron? It might be really cute and definitely practical!

Question for all you smockers! Is there a good place site to learn to smock? I LOVE the look, but I'm very intimidated by the idea. Where do you even start? Any recommendations?

I took a class many years ago. Like someone else said, if you can crossstitch, you can smock. I personally do not pleat my own panels anymore. The shop where I buy my supplies does the pleating for me (saves a lot of time). I have to say, when I make a smocked dress I tend to use the very best fabrics and use french seams. Most of my sewing for the girls are just fun frocks but I consider my smocked dresses heirlooms that my grandbabies can one day wear. Once I figure the photobucket thing out, I'll try to post a picture.

This is beautiful!! Your smocking looks perfect. I had Jennifer (JenWDW) make some Snow White bows for us and they are one of my favorites from her!

Wow, it does look even better on. I love Michael Miller fabrics, he has a reallly cute pirate fabric that I'm going to have to make something out of.

Okay, here goes nothing! First attempt to post a photo...

This dress was my first smocking project. DD who is now 9 wore this dress when she was 4, 5 & 6. She wishes it would still fit! DD2 will hopefully wear it this Easter. Notice the sneakers! This is at the Easter Egg hunt at the Naval Academy and it is a run for your life event to get as many eggs as possible. The mids put out 1000's of eggs, it is so much fun!

Trust me, from what I've seen on these boards, you all can do it if I can do it!

Your DD is a cutie, her outfits were so cute. I am dreading the day when my DDs decide they are too old for customs. Hopefully I can fit a few more trips in before they come to that decision. Your bag is really cute! Do you mind me asking how big it is? It looks like it might make a great diaper bag.
