I tried the tension/stitch length ruffling technique- to try to get a ruffle, but my machine didnt ruffle anything. I need a Kenmore/Janome universal ruffler foot....

I finished my first Simply Sweet top. It is now clear to me that my brain is affected by this pregnancy- I made so many stupid mistakes that I normally would never have made!! Now I just have to do the pants to it- at least with the easy fit pants I have done those a bunch of times and could make them in my sleep. DD2 is petite and just barely started wearing 2T, this top, when I get it on her fits her perfectly- I expected a little more wiggle room and its a little difficult to get on over her head. But the pattern is adorable!

Do I do a shin-length capri OR a full pant length for her??? I really like the idea of a capri, I just wish it was warmer around here these days. Although, a single layer of cotton (pants or capris) is probably not warm enough. Most days here we are in the 30s or 40s, maybe low 50s
CARLA aka LouisMama
Now Carla, I have a question for you....the bodice has this beautiful lining, how come you dont have instructions for placing the skirt seam between the bodice layers so that the whole inside of the dress would have a finished look? Am I making sense? I think the inner lining piece might have to be a little longer than the others ?yes? no?
I also did top stitching around the entire top of the bodice, including the sides, which I think suits the top stitching you finish the bodice to the skirt with.
Fun pattern. I am not a quick sewer, so I think under normal circumstances I could do this in about half a day. I may cut out the pants today and complete tomorrow. Lots of distractions. I am NEVER in the house alone.

I haven't perfected the tension ruffling technique, either.

We need pictures of this top you made today!! I like the easy fit pants as capris, too. I think it would be kind of complicated to put the skirt inside the lining and the outside of the bodice. I'm sure it could be done, though.

Now wheres the fun in that? you have to wait til I finish the bottoms...
I guess I could do pants now and then a long short for the summertime. She's not a fast grower,so I expect it to last til August. (gosh I hope!) I love this fabric!

See normally I would expect to sew the skirt to the outer lining (fashion fabric) and underlining and then the inner lining would come down over the skirt seam and be topstitched in place, but you would need just enough extra I think to tuck it in and up so theres no raw edge. Which might mean a different pattern piece for the inside. So you would sandwich the skirt piece...I've done it on some McCalls patterns, but not for a while and attempting it with my brain in it's current state would be a disaster!:scared1:

Ya'll inspired me to try sewing DDs some Disney outfits (although much simpler ones than most of you make!). Let me just say, I have not sewn anything with a pattern or with too many steps in about 25 years. Since everyone said Carla's patterns were easy to follow I figured that was a good place to start. I made the reversible a-line for DD3--Mickey heads on 1 side, Tigger on the other (I didn't make DD1's dress):

DSC04350.jpg

I didn't attempt a button-hole, so the button is sewn on a snap. I couldn't find any Mickey buttons, so I'll have to keep looking. Next I need to figure out the ruffler I have & attempt some more dresses!

Great job! I love that the dress is reversible, two looks in one!

OOOH I so want to get out my sewing machine to see if the tension ruffling method works for me. Cuz you all know that I can't ruffle for the LIFE of me. And Aisling expects a wardrobe of sundresses for this summer. I need to learn to ruffle

OR i need to buy a new machine that I could get a ruffler for...hmmm

HEY KAREN - CRICUT QUEEN!I have a question for you. When you make your chipboard books, how do you attach the paper to the front and back? Do you use xyron? Or what type of adhesive? I'm trying to use xyron, but the areas right up next to the edge are sticky. I'm wondering if I should try something else?

Is someone summonsing the Queen???? :lmao:

When I make my books, I do tape paper to BOTH sides of the page. I have not used a xyron for this, although I have thought about it (I just don't have one large enough for it.) I've tried lots of different ways to tape the paper to the pages, but what I ahve found to work best is using my mega tape holding ATG gun and then going to town with the tape. I usually make a grid pattern with the tape on the chip board only, and then place the paper on top of that. I always put the tape as close to the edge of the chip board as possible and work my way in from there. Does that make sense??

This is the tapegun I use (I use the RED one) and the tape rolls are HUGE and really cheap compared to getting the two sided sticky tape at Micheals or Joanns. If you want more info on this, let me know-

I have made it several times and I line it each time. To me it makes it less flimsy. I just put the ruffle in between the two layers and sewed it together and then topstitch the ruffle to make it lay down. I did one dress where I did not topstitch the ruffle down and it was very cute like that. HTH

Thank you. Do you not need bias tape then?

Makes perfect sense! AND, the good news? I just ordered an ATG gun this afternoon! Now I just have to wait for it to come in. I can't wait to see how these autograph books come out. I went and bought a Bind It All today, too. I'm gonna use that to put it all together. I'm almost giddy!

OOOOh you are going to love your ATG gun. I couldn't live without mine now. The Bind it all is going to be perfect for autograph books!!! :thumbsup2

This is how I do mine. I honestly assumed it was in the instructions. I don't make the inner lining any longer than the pattern suggests. I just fold over the seam allowance and topstitch. Yes that means that I don't read them all the way through. I use the pictures.

Thank you. Do you not need bias tape then?
Nope. No bias tape necessary. That is why I do it.:thumbsup2

And I have good news! My Granny, as you remember, she had a stroke a few weeks back. Well, first a little update. She had a slimy insurance person sell her some insurance year before last (we didn't know!!!! and my Mom has power of attorney)...she gave up medicare for this crapy insurance. Well, guess what...the insurance only covered for her to go into nursing care in this CRAPY home in a VERY BAD neighborhood. WE ARE NOT HAPPY!!!! It took two days before they started PT with her!:scared1: Thankfully, we have a friend that does that and she started with her the first day, we didn't even ask the home. My mom has been working and working to get all of this straight while my poor Granny sits over there! Mom called this morning to let me know we move her on the 28th to a home right down the road from her!   I am soooooo happy! This is a home we have always used for my grandparents...THEY ROCK!
Glad Granny will be close to home soon!

I am working on a marieke, which I am so happy to do with a sew along. I wish there was a sew along for the laguna, which I am still afraid to try!
Can't wait to see photos!

Your girls are super cute! Great job on the a-line!!!!

So I haven't been on here for some time because I am the lady making the 14 cushions for my friends dance studio. So after 6 months of hard work I HAVE FINISHED THE CUSHIONS!!! That's right I have actually finished making 14 30X23 cushions! Of course I forgot to take a picture of them in the dance studio, but they are done. I have such relief I just had to post. Now I'm making a picture poster board for her circuit breaker cover...:confused3 it never ends.

I've since finished a jacket and vest for my DD and now I'm making a neat brown top for myself, I'll post pictures later.

Any teachers out there???? Joann's just started a program that gives teachers 15% off of their entire purchase!!!

What? How come I didn't know about this? I was just there on Saturday stocking up on thread.

Very cute!

Okay, speaking of CarlaC... question about the Easy Fit Pants. Just made a set for DD9 and they are way droopy in the crotch. She can pull them up to her chest to get the crotch to fit. Has anyone shortened the top for a more correct fit? Even as I was cutting them out I thought the top of the pants looked loooong. Thanks for any insight!

We are having a bad weekend. My 16 year old cat (my first baby) is lost. He got out on Saturday. We've put up a ton of fliers and walked the neighborhood looking for him with no luck. He's siamese so if he was stuck somewhere I would hear him and he always comes when I call him. I just hate not knowing what has happened to him. :sad1:

Here's a similar pattern - if you can alter it and make it longer it would work. (I think it starts at a 3 though, so it moght be too big)

http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M9369.htm??tab=list/infants_toddlers_children&page=all

Thanks! I don't remember seeing that pattern. I'll have to look for it the next time McCalls are on sale.

Okay, I found the free one I was talking about.
This one is really similar, but ties at the shoulders. Here's the picture

Here is the pattern:

Thanks! I forgot about that one - I've had the PDF saved for a long time. I'll have to give it a try.

Mickey and Minnie's Magical Journey on ice is coming to our area mid-April and mid-November. I was going to take DD to the April show, but I just found out today about the November show and think I'll wait for that one (she'll be 23 months in November and will probably have a little longer attention span). I was thinking of making a patchwork twirl skirt with a top with a Mickey head from buttons (got the ideas from ladies here!!)

I had to shorten the top of the easy fit pants to fit DGD4. I had the same problem, they were midway up on her belly and then the legs were too short. I took an inch off the top and added it to the lenght of the legs. It fits her so much better.

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. The same thing happened to our cat. She was about 12 or so and was an outdoor cat. She just disappeared. Our neighbor found her a few weeks later in her favorite bush. Apparently she went to her favorite bush and layed down and died. It was so sad but I was happy she hadn't been hit by a car. I always dreaded coming home, afraid I would find her hit in the road. Good luck and hopefully she will show up.

Ok here are some pictures that I have been meaning to post, you'd think that not working I would have more time!
Anyway first up is the last Big Give outfits I did ( They are for Noah and his brother Joshua)

I think it is Hilarious and very coincendental that so many also went bowling with the family on V-day! We also went bowling. It was the kids first time and we all had fun. Ds did sit out a few frames as he pinched a finger in the balls. But has been asking when we are going again so he isn't scarred for life! Here's a great shot for you all.
