We were booked and headed to Disney on Sat, but laid off today. Must finish two weeks so no trip for the kids. We have 3 kids, DD 6, DD3 and DS2, all who have talked nonstop about trip. They cleaned every day to earn $$ for their souveniers. DS 6 checked out travel books from the library to go over all the rides, and even read about DW to the younger ones. She wrote letters to people on the trip, all drew pictures, etc. How do we break the news? At their age, I know they won't understand the concept.

Also, just adds salt to the wound when you can't get your money back.:sad1:

I am so sorry. Is there anyway you can get where ever you are supposed to finish the 2 weeks to understand that you have already planned and paid for this trip and cannot get the money back? I would honestly just have to go and file for unemployment upon returning. They have already taken your job what more can they do?? I would not be willing to lose that much money because the job decided they want to let you go but make you work for 2 weeks first. :grouphug:

If you have been laid off why do you have to work for 2 weeks when you obviously had holidays booked. I know I would be inclined to tell them what to do and I would be on the trip. you won't have a job anyway so your not loosing anything unless they are giving you a payoff.
Hopefully you can work something out and go and enjoy your trip

Honestly, if you've paid and can't get your money back, I'd go. They can't do much if they've already laid you off. Tell them you have plans, you can't change them and you would like to get your last paycheck with all your vacation/sick pay at the end of this week. I'm so sorry for your job loss, I hope you are able to find something soon and I really hope you can go to Disney! :)

I agree with the two PP, there isn't much they can do now. And so close to your trip I am not sure if Disney will give you your money back. It's already paid for so you can be frugal in other ways....I wish you luck!

I also agree with the pps. If you are concerned about loyalty, try to work something out with them -- if they deserve you're loyalty (getting you to work those last 2 weeks since they're the one letting YOU go), tell them that they need to consider plans you had previously arranged -- they had to know about at least your scheduled vacation time, if not the specific vacation. Use the guilt-trip kids card if you have to!!!!!!!

I agree with PPs as well....go! Its paid for, they laid you off, what more can they do if you take your previously scheduled trip.

and what is the worst they can do? Fire You? Tell them to take the job and shove it and have a wonderful time... Don't loose your sanity over it... its not worth it... ENJOY life is way too short!

Go What can they do? The company will forget your children won't. Go!!!

I don't work (SAHM), but I would have a hard enough time cancelling for a job I liked and was keeping, but a job that I already lost...SEE YA!!!! I'd be on vacation. They already let you go...

Side note, sorry for your job loss and best of luck finding a new one.

I'm so sorry for you. Good luck with everything. :grouphug:

If your time off was scheduled and approved through normal channels before they made the layoff decision, it's their problem, not yours. They can't force you to work those days. I would tell them "Remember I had a vacation scheduled so my last day is X"

I agree with everyone here- they can't really do anything to you if you had your vacation approved - go and enjoy your kids!

I agree with everyone else - unless you think there is a chance you'll get your job back and don't want to burn any bridges then I'd go on the trip especially if its already paid for. Otherwise if they really want/need for you to work then the company should reimburse you for any trip expenses you can't get back. I bet if you explained the situation they'd tell you to go. Jobs come and go but your children are yours forever - go make some memories!

Yes they can FIRE him and he will not be able to collect unemployment for being fired. You may want to check with your unemployment board first and of course if you are getting a severance package then you must stick with the two weeks. We have been through this type of thing with my adult children and my mom all just recent, all were given severnce packages, if they stayed X amount of time, or they would be terminated for not working. State of Georgia will not pay unemployment if you are fired and the company's just reason would be that you wouldn't work the required hours.

Call DIsney and explain what is going on. Ask them to allow you to change your dates. They will probably let you do this with out charge. If the CM you get will not allow you to do this ask for Guest Services. I know the kids would be happy that you are still going only later. Don't risk the unemployment or severence. Big hug for you and much Pixie Dust to finding a new job. pixiedust:

While I don't have all of the information from you about this situation - I can tell you that I manage a business of 46 employees and have a lot of information in my brain in regards to your rights. And specifically, I'm speaking of federal labor laws, etc. They may be offering you a severance package for the layoff, and depending on how the state laws of Ohio are set up (saw this info on your post), you are entitled to certain aspects that should allow you to be in control of what happens from here forward. Meaning, they are laying you off, but you have had benefits with them up to this point, most likely (again I am assuming).

If you want to pm me with more info, I'd be more than happy to review it for you and see if you can't keep your vacation with your kiddos but not completely walk away from job and burning any bridges. They may think giving you 2 weeks notice of termination with pay while you job search is their idea of compensation by not booting you out of the door today. But who's to say they don't do that next week? And then you already missed your vacation. You should be protected to keep the vacation that is paid for, and if you were using vacation time to go, and if they are keeping you on payroll for the next two weeks, you are still employed and should be able to practice that benefit up until your term date. I know it's confusing... let me know if I can help. Be more than happy to! :grouphug:

Contact Disney and let them know what has happened.....I've read of some very wonderful things that they have done for people in less dire straits than yours.

For example....perhaps they'll let you postpone your trip until after this 2 week period.....so the kids will only be disappointed that the number of days until the trip are a little more than they thought. I know that sounds odd to go on an expensive trip when you've just been laid off, but it's already paid for, and if you're not going to get the money back to use for survival, well, why lose the money and the fun! You'll need to work harder to be frugal about food....but you'd have to eat at home anyway, so just spend your home food budget on groceries at Disney and pack your lunches each day. TV dinners can be heated in the food court microwave. No it's not ideal, but hey, it's only food....and besides eating a sandwich in line means more rides!! You have little enough ones that I'm gonna bet you plan on having a stroller anyway, so carrying a soft side cooler should be pretty easy. Bring along water bottles or mugs from home and get free ice water at any CS restaurant.....bring along those little flavor packets ($1.88 for 10 at Walmart) and the kids will think they have koolaid/juice. Hit the dollar store for Disney design crackers/cookies and they may not even care that it's not a Mickey Bar (ok, that's stretching it, but just remind them at least they're in Disney!!).

You will want to apply for unemployment as soon as you're done working....but around here at least you don't get paid for the first week you're unemployed anyway.....and here we "check in" either online or by phone, no going down to the offices anymore like the old days. You are supposed to be actively looking for work, but hey, if you read their list of how to look for work, one of them is networking with other people to let them know you're avaialble. So....tell people you're looking for work...you never know...the guy behind you in line might be a CEO of a small company in your town and offer you a job. Or go apply at Disney (though I hear they froze hiring). You can also read your local area job ads online and send out your resume from any computer......so apply for a few things. By the time they get back to you for an interview you'll be home anyway.

I would NOT however burn the bridge that is your current employer by telling them where to shove it and not staying the two weeks (tempting as that may be!). I'm guessing here, but sounds like you were told that your department or whatever is being eliminated and your last day will be x. Most lay offs, which is what the PP's are probably thinking of are "we are laying you off, get your stuff and go home and don't come back.". But not all lays offs are that way. Don't burn that bridge for a few reasons.....when/if the economy shifts again, you may want to return to that employer....burn a bridge and that's not possible. Another is that with so many people looking for work, prospective employers can afford to be choosy. Which means that they will likely contact previous employers of the top few candidates.....what your previous employer says about you could make the difference. While they aren't allowed to say a lot anymore, the one telling answer (at least for me when I was hiring) was whether you are eligible for rehire.....if you burned that bridge the answer is likely no. But if by chance they still say yes.....my next question is WOULD they rehire you if they had a position. That is likely to be no if you burn bridges.

If your finances say you can't make it to Disney after your job ends.....ask them if you can put your payments into another reservation 6 months or a year from now. Yes, it may be tough to take time off from a brand new job, but when that time comes around you can decide what to do....perhaps the new job is so good that you can afford time off with no vacation pay....or maybe they'll offer you vacation time without a waiting period.....or maybe you call Disney and explain and postpone again. The worst that can happen is that they say no to another postponement and you lose that money then....the best thing is that you don't lose the money you just have to wait and go.

I know if you have to cancel or even postpone, the kids will have a hard time understanding......and there will be tears and anger and everything that you don't need right now....you have enough stress and enough worries right? But...try hard to take a deep breath, put a smile on your face and help them understand that you're sad too, but it's not forever. They still won't get it very well, but getting mad at them is only going to add to your guilt tomorrow, lol. Lots of hugs....maybe bring out the surprises you had for them a little at a time over the next week.....go to the dollar store for some if you didn't have any.....and see how creative you and the kids can be to bring Disney into your house if you can't go there. Pancakes shaped like wobbly Mickey heads.....sandwiches cut with a Disney cookie cutter.....going to the park and pretending that the slide is Splash Mountain (bring along a squirt bottle, lol). It's amazing how easy it is to distract most kids from sadness with just a little silliness.

Good luck to you! May you find an even better job with lots of time off to visit the World.

Unemployment varies from state to state - I live in Oklahoma and it's an at will state, meaning we can terminate someone without any reason but unless we can prove willful misconduct, in the instance of actually firing someone, they can still go collect unemployment. I'm not sure in regards to Ohio which I believe is where the original poster resides. If this person has vacation time, it may be that the state of Ohio has to pay out any earned vacation time that has not been used (again I don't know for sure, in Oklahoma we have to pay out any earned vacation time whether they were fired for the worst offense or just walked away from the job) so what I just want to encourage you to find out your state's labor laws because it's possible you will be compensated regardless. Will depend on what benefits your company offers and from there will revert to the laws of Ohio. You never know - they may hope you do quit as it might give them an out on liability for unemployment or such.., but practice your vacation time if you can (if it's already been approved) so that you do continue to cooperate with the lay off and their final date of employment- you just might be able to be on vacation for a part of it. :scratchin

ITA. Are you getting some great severance pay or something? If not, the heck with the 2 weeks, or just call in sick for the time you'll be gone. Like PP said, they've already taken your job. I certainly wouldn't let them also take away my WDW trip that's completely paid for and my kids know and are looking foward to.
