Close: Lost job today, no Disney

So sorry that you and your family are having to go through this.

I'll echo everyone else. If you have to stay for a severance package or to collect unemployment I understand staying the 2 weeks. Then call WDW and see if there is anything the can do to help. It is a lot of $$ you don't just want to loose. If you aren't getting a package and could still collect unemployment (if such is an option/plan) I'd tell them to shove it....but get the reference letter first!

The case to make before the unemployment board in advance is the money invested in the trip.

You need to talk to three parties in advance. Your company asking what their take is regarding your already-scheduled trip. Disney asking what their take is regarding a sudden need to cancel. And the unemployment office. We'll need to find out whether Disney is really a stickler for the idea of "that's what trip insurance is for".

Is the company demanding that you work these two weeks or are they offering work and pay for these two weeks but not for one or two weeks thereafter?

And don't overlook the chance the company is trying to turn this whole thing into a trick question (don't come out and accuse them!), telling you to work these two weeks specifically to induce you to refuse and forfeit unemployment benefits which in turn reduces the unemployment tax the employer has to pay in the long run.

:grouphug: So sorry to hear about your situation.

PLEASE contact your HR dept to see WHAT you are entitled too. You do not want to CHEAT YOURSELF out of possible unemployment, you got let go, its HARD out there finding something new!!!
I hope you are able to go on your trip. iF not CALL disney, ask to speak with a Manager and perhaps they can help, I think they WILL. Here's some pixie dust and hopes that your situation turns around REALLY soon!pixiedust:

Best of Luck!!
Keep us posted!

This breaks my heart. I'm so very sorry you're going through this!:( I agree with the others about calling Disney and seeing about postponing your trip. It would be terrible for you to lose all that money and the vacation. I hope an alternative is presented to you.

Thanks for kindness and input. The paperwork received today mandates time served to receive severance and don't want to mess with unemployment. In this climate, I can't do anything to jeoprodize the year of unemployment.

We actually rented DVC points from a member on this site and were told there was nothing we can do. Seeing how we are not owners ourselves, unfortunately we are not able to deal directly with WDW.

I am so sorry. My heart really goes out to you.
All we can do it send HUGS your way...:grouphug:

I completely understand where you're coming from on the severance. You're fortunate, however, to live in OH, in that they have a very generous unemployment system, from what I understand (I'm in HR, but not in OH).

I doubt the company encouraged it, but you might seriosuly want to consult with an attorney (your own--not a company one) about the terms of your severance agreement. I've seen all kinds of wonky stuff incorporated into those agreements, not all of which is kosher. It may be worth the investment it would take.

Best of luck to you. I'm so sorry that this has happened.

Oh no- how terrible!:( Is there any hope of talking to your employer about allowing you to finish out the 2 weeks when you return?

I'm sorry you lost your job :guilty: Maybe a spouse or family member can take them. I wish you the best of luck.

Sorry to hear you lost your job and maybe your vacation.:sad2:
:grouphug: :grouphug:
Who knows, maybe it will work out that you still could get to WDW.
Good luck with everything!

I'm so sorry to hear about this. I know it's not the most fun solution, but can your spouse take the kids? I know $$ may be a big concern right now but if you're all paid up and on the dining plan then it may not cost too much. Of course handling 3 little ones by yourself at Disney may not be too fun for her/him either. I hope everything works out for you and your family!

Yes they can FIRE him and he will not be able to collect unemployment for being fired. You may want to check with your unemployment board first and of course if you are getting a severance package then you must stick with the two weeks. We have been through this type of thing with my adult children and my mom all just recent, all were given severnce packages, if they stayed X amount of time, or they would be terminated for not working. State of Georgia will not pay unemployment if you are fired and the company's just reason would be that you wouldn't work the required hours.

Call DIsney and explain what is going on. Ask them to allow you to change your dates. They will probably let you do this with out charge. If the CM you get will not allow you to do this ask for Guest Services. I know the kids would be happy that you are still going only later. Don't risk the unemployment or severence. Big hug for you and much Pixie Dust to finding a new job. pixiedust:

Unemployment does pay if you have been fired in many cases. Once the OP explains the situation they can very well still get their unemployment as they are not being fired for being a problem worker.

Did you question anyone today about your preplanned vacation when you received the news? If not, please see your HR director first thing when you arrive at work.
Good luck.

Oh that is too bad. I'm sorry for your job loss and I hope things turn around for you quickly! About the DVC rental. Maybe ask around to see if there is a friend or (non-rif'd) co-worker who may be interested in "subletting" it from you, maybe at a reduced cost, so you can at least get some of your money back? Or maybe just give it to a family member so that it at least wouldn't go to waste. Just a thought, you never know who might be interested. The DVC member would only have to change the name on the ressie.

I would send your family without you in this case.

I agree with PPs as well....go! Its paid for, they laid you off, what more can they do if you take your previously scheduled trip.

I agree 300%!! Seriously, money comes and goes. It's paid for! Money's already spent.

Getting laid off = 2 weeks
Disney Trip = paid for
Kids memories = priceless :)
