Help, I have no idea what to get my husband this year and can use all of the suggestions I can get. He's a Nikon guy, we have D70s and most of the lenses he would like. He has the slingshot camera bag (I highly recommend this one if anyone is looking for a bag). He's already on a list for the D300. Are there any books, accessories, software, subscriptions out there that I should look at?

Thanks,

If he is a real camera guy his has already secretly purchased most of the above, get him guitar hero III;)

From another Nikon guy...how about a trip to WDW to use his new D300? (D300's are available as of today, apparently)

(Mrs YEKCIM, are YOU listening?????)

What every Nikon shooter needs for Christmas....

A Canon.

Filters? Does he have a good tripod?

As for magazines, my favorite is Photography Monthly, a UK magazine, but you can get a US subscription (assuming you're in the US, that is).

I also like the trip idea--to Disney or elsewhere.

And a flash? If he doesn't already own one, either the Nikon SB600 or SB800 would be a nice complement to his set-up. I held off on getting a flash for quite awhile because I prefer to shoot in natural light, but I finally bought the SB600 and am glad I did.

Also, you might check out this thread about what is on others' Christmas lists: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1632356 I haven't read it, but I'd bet there are some good ideas in there.

You spelled it wrong.... its a cannon. This way we Nikonians can fire shots at you other camera users!!! :thumbsup2

Does he have a good tripod? I too like the idea of a trip to the World to get that new D300 broken in real good. Nothing like a trip to the World to get some real good use out of a new camera.

Trip to WDW- we just got back, thinking about Hawaii next year
Canon- I don't think so
Memory cards- we bought extra for our trip
Filters- what is the one you use for water falls, and can anyone recommend one?
Tripod- is there a good light weight one?
Flash- he has one
Subscriptions- Photography monthly (yes we are in he US) I will look in to it
I will check out the Christmas lists, thanks for all the help so far.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Tripod- is there a good light weight one?

There are several good lightones out there.. In the last month members of the forum have bought Slik, Giotos, and El Charman (sp) There are lots of things to concider when one chooses a tripod, so I personally wouldn't get him that unless you know which one he wants.

Is he interested in portiture? If you you might get him a general type lighting set up.

Filters- what is the one you use for water falls, and can anyone recommend one?

Although not specifically for waterfalls, every bag should contain a circular polarizing filter. It'll knock out those unwanted reflections (whether it be from glass or water) and help boost some color in harsh lighting conditions.

Don't forget about a nice Op/Tech Pro strap! And I rather like the little Spudz microfiber clothes, they are in a small pouch that you can clip onto the bag or the camera itself, and give you a nice cleaning cloth whenever you need it. They're 18% gray, too!

You can buy very similar ones with Mickey Mouse on them from WDW but those are a bit smaller.

You mentioned he has an external flash, but does he have a diffuser? The Gary Fong Lightsphere is very popular (http://store.garyfonginc.com/diffuserspro.html), and he's reduced the price by $10 to $39.95--probably because there are some eBay sellers offering what appears to be the same thing for much less. I ordered one on eBay but haven't gotten it yet. Try searching for "Lambency flash diffuser Nikon." All the ones on eBay appear to ship from Hong Kong, so if you go that route, you'll probably want to order soon.

You guys are doing great! I love the strap idea, cloth and diffuser.
Thanks!!

What I found invaluable on my last trip to WDW was back up storage device.

I have the Jobo Giga Vu Pro 40gb. This allows you to view and back up your photos on a large 5" screen. It also provides a great back up, even if you dont need to overwrite memory cards (which can be unreliable anyway) or intend to create photo CDs when you are there. We had a 21 day trip and I took around 3000 pics which all backed up a treat on this machine. It reads RAW as well as all the other picture formats. You can also use it for music, video and data. It does either a simple data transfer or a memory card back up (meaning you can transfer between cards if you wish) .We come from the UK so I didnt want to lug my laptop - this was a brilliant compromise.

They do cheaper versions without the LCD, but Id say the screen was a definate bonus!

Just an idea for you...as a keen photographer who loves gadgets, this is one of my favourite gizmos!

One thing to remember is that a portable back up device is the least reliable way to store your photos as it's just a laptop hard drive in a box; if you have determined that that's the way you want to go, the best bet is to buy a pair of identical ones and copy your photos to both. That way, if/when a hard drive fails in one, you'll hopefully still have a good copy - otherwise you have a good chance of losing every photo you put on there.

Other Christmas thoughts would be gift certificates to somewhere that can make nice-quality prints of his photos, and perhaps some nice frames as well.
