Wait a minute. I am a christian and I believe that the earth is millions of years old. How is that agianst christian beliefs???? Doesn't the bible say that a thousand years is but the blink of an eye to God? The bible never spells out exactly when creation takes place.

:thumbsup2 Most Christians believe the earth is millions of year old.

ITA. I have the unique perspective of growing up in an extremely Christian home and pursued a career as a science teacher. (off topic, my pastor was seriously upset at me for going into science!) Anyways, I don't feel the evolution occurs as the convential scientists believe, nor do I believe in creation as the story tells it. I really see no reason why Intelligent Design can't be an explanation. God used his divinity to create our world via micro (not macro) evolution and the big bang. The force of 2 tiny molecules floating an infinity of space that created the entire universe seems too perfect to have been a random occurance.

Yep, count me in too. It is possible to believe that God created the earth AND it is millions of years old. I don't know that I believe in the Big Bang, but I'm pretty sure that some noise WAS made when God created the Earth. :thumbsup2

Like I said, I didn't want to start a debate, so I will not answer that on this forum. I will say that I know there are many Christians who do not believe as I do, and I respect that but simply disagree with it.

As Christians we don't believe that (again, like the OP, I'm not looking for an argument just stating our belief), so I just mention to them that according to the Bible that is not the case.

Okay, that makes more sense. Since your post said "As Christians, we don't believe..." I think I lot of us interpreted that as saying "Christians don't believe" rather than "Our family doesn't believe".

At least, that is how I first read it (which did confuse me).

Someone mentioned that people may be wary of It's a Small World because it has non-Christians. Would someone actually not take their child on a ride because of that?

Hello all,
If you're looking here I'm hoping that you are Christians and can assist. I'm not trying to be offensive, I'm just hoping to get input from people with a similar perspective.

We love Disney and just purchased annual passes after not going for over 14 years! We now have 2 little ones. Blessing #1-4years old and Blessing #2 18months.

Here are my concerns. I want to enjoy WDW and not feel like I'm having to protect my kids the whole time, so I want to have a game plan. I feel that I'm responsible for what I expose them to and in my opinion (I'm NOT looking to argue viewpoints- just suggestions from LIKE MINDED people) some things at disney are truly opposed to the scripture. This may seem silly to some but prefer to see a witch portrayed as something bad (like n Snow White-although we WON'T do the ride so I don't scare my kids) that a sourcerer as something good...like Mickey in Fantasmic OR Maybe I just don't like Fantasmic because of the sheer amount of evil presented...I'm not 100% sure. I can tell you that we saw fantasmic at Disney LAND and we left feeling sick.

If you feel the same, can you tell me what rides or attractions to avoid?

Also, I'm about to post about a book called The Gospel According to Disney...look there and contribute, I'de love to know your opinion.

In Him,
Silvia

Thanks. I did not feel ridiculed but I appreciate the concern. I just wanted to clarify that we are VERY realistic with our exposure, we don't shelter in a way that would keep our kids out of this world...we expose (as long it we don't believe it will harm- like fear) and teach. "Teach your children in the way they should go and they will not depart from it."

While I will mention that above all else (age appropriate or political correctness) my concern is for my child's spiritual growth. My prayer for them is that above all else they will love God....I believe that if they do, they will be set up for success...."Seek first the Kingdom of God and all these things will be added to you." Of course I provide them with other things such as nutrition and education but their relationship with the Lord is my #1 priority. After all this life is like the wind, here today, gone tomorrow while our spirits will live forever.

I never said I planned to avoid most rides:rotfl2:

I'm asking for opinions/ experience. I would actually take my kids (my 4 yr old WOULD understand) on rides that Mention evolution (and teach otherwise) as long as the whole thing is not completely focused on that....what purpose whould that have.

I have only regretted 3 things between our Disneyland trip (Son was 2) and our 4 hour MK visit:
- Fantasmic- big one because of Mickey "the good guy" fighting the "bad" with sorcery...just seems confusing to my little guy. I saw the Electric light show in the MK last week and I didn't like Mickey not the black demon looking this but I did NOT have the same regret although I wouldn't see it again.
- Stitch at MK- my son got scared, my hubby took him, so I don't know what was so bad but he still tells no "NO STITCH"
- The Magic of Brother Bear show at Disney Land- The WHOLE thing seemed to be about calling spirits and Magic...It WAS 100% about that, I just didn't like it. It's to hard to explain to my son that it's not OK when the WHOLE think is about that???

It really sounds like you are truly not looking for a Christian perspective...you are looking for things your kids will understand and not be afraid of. I think that is why the answers you are getting are a little less than helpful. fantasmic scares the heck out of alot of kids. Stitch is freaky.

In terms of Magic of Brother Bear...is that really such a bad thing to expose your child to? Is it anti-Christian to expose a child to another culture? I am not sure to a Christian why this would be an issue. SOme of the most devout people I know are amazingly aware of the paths other cultures lead.

That's reaqly funny because I am a Science teacher who was raised in a more fundamentalist church. I have since changed affiliations, but I got that backlash as well as a teen. I am also sort of in the middle on the whole evolution thing. I find it hard to completely discount either creation or evolution, and I don't think they are necessarily mutually exclusive. The creation narrative in the bible actually fits pretty well with the evolutionary timeline. It thnik the whole "we came from monkeys" thing makes people not evey want to examine the theory for its merits, but discount the whole thing. I am not sure I believe all the peices and parts, but I just can't junk the whole thing because of it. Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack the thread, but it was a neat coincidence.

I hope so. I can't imagine not allowing your child to even view people of other cultures. That is quite a step beyond avoiding evolution or magic.

I questioned that post, too. We should certainly expose our children to other cultures and even other religions. How will kids be able to make their own choice (which we all have to) if they haven't been exposed to other people's ideas about how the world works? How will you be able to share Christianity with someone who isn't if you don't know where they are coming from?

Anyway, I worried about that post as someone else had mentioned not riding the Jungle Cruise because there are natives on the ride. :confused3 Doesn't seem very Christian-like to discriminate against other cultures, even if they arent' Christian.

I actually have relatives that said it made them uncomfortable. The had to explain the temple in India ect, and didn't want their children knowing there were other religions out there.

I agree. I found it rather offensive that someone would avoid "natives".

I agree with pp's that I am not sure you are going to disney with the right attitude. Disney is an escape from the "real" world and it is a place of magic. So if you dont like it...dont go. But I think you are over thinking. You have 2 young kids. My family is very religious and we never ever spent our annual disney visits discussing why this ride was bad and blah blah. It was a vacation. I knew that disney was all about the imagination and if you ask too many questions you will never find the answers you need. Sometimes there just isn't a rhyme or reason to things. You just have to believe. I think your kids are young and they'll be fine, when they grow up they will realize that disney was make believe. Just let them enjoy being a child. I went to disney at least once a year and I dont pratice evil witchcraft. JMO.

Wow, that's unfortunate. Ironically, I feel rather sheltered because I've never met people that were that sheltered.

We are Christians and we do not avoid any of the rides. We even actually like Ellen's Universe of Engery....it is a nice long and COLD break in the day! :) My children know of our personal understanding of the Bible on this topic and I actually like the conservation topics brought up.

We also love Haunted Mansion. My children are well aware of our personal beliefs on death and the afterlife and evil, but they also can quote the entire scene in the elevator by heart! :rotfl:

That seems about as close-minded as one could get! I went to catholic school for 12 years and was educated about ALL of the different religions of the world as part of the religious ed curriculum! The artistry that goes into IASW is amazing and I can't believe someone would be offended by or uncomfortable with it -- it's like not acknowledging that other countries and cultures exist in the world -- how ridiculous is that!

If you have that strong beliefs, then I think you wasted your money on season passes. If you are going to see evil in everything and everyone, then you don't want to spend or give money to an org. that shows evil, from your point of view.

Why? Would you want to go.
