*Chocolate and Pixie Dust* - An August 2008 TR- 8/29 pg 6: Sort of an update

Why can't I marry a rich woman?;)

I hope the apt. works out...

Stomach virus=not gud....

We are both obviously not looking in the right places :lmao:

Thanks!!!

Stomach viruses are the worst!

How are you?

Pixie dust for the apartment! :wizard:

I am sorry that T had a stomach virus :(.

Don't cry! I was just thinking tonight how much I would love to be a stay-at-home mom -- that depressed me because I can't. :sad2:

Thanks!!!

T is feeling much better :)

I just want to get up late, go to the gym, and shop :rotfl2:

I hope you don't catch what your nephew had! Altho it might give you some time off!;)
I can't wait to see the pictures from Williamsburg. It's on my top 10 places to visit in the us.

I didn't catch it. And he's all better now :)

Pictures will be posted tonight.

Oh and I love your new siggie!

First, I have to say that you're giving Scott a run for his money! This PTR is moving fast as lightning!!!!!!

Second, that was one early departure time!! Woo-eee!! My friend who visited for my birthday weekend always takes Amtrak down to visit me (she lives in Maine) because she's scared to fly. But, she really enjoys the train ride.

Can't wait to hear more about the trip :)

My nephew was over this weekend and had a stomach virus :scared1: So, that was not fun.

I will update tomorrow with lots of pictures of all things Colonial and respond to your posts.

Now, I'm off to cry because tonight officially ends my spring break. I actually have to work tomorrow. Why can't I marry a rich man?

So sorry to hear about the stomach virus! It stinks! I know! :goodvibes

Stomach virus = THE WORST!!! When I was working, all the kids in school knew: "Mrs B doesn't do vomit." :lmao: Hope T is ok and you don't get it!

The BEST gift my DH has given me is the opportunity to be a Stay-at-home-mom. I tell him that all the time. :lovestruc And I thank him for appreciating all I do AT HOME to keep things running smoothly. He doesn't act like I "don't work".
I worked for 7 years when DD was at our parish school - but it cost me money. lol (those of you who work for a Catholic school know what I am talking about! ;) ) I did it as a "vocation", not as a job. But now that she is in HS, there's just too much to keep up with at home and her schedule. I love being "home"! (although, how much time I actually spend IN the house is up for discussion! lol)

Jenn: Champagne talk: Have you ever had Pol Roger? Excellent. One of my favorites, along with Veuve Clicquot and Dom. yum yum yum :woohoo:

When I last left off, I was heading down the escalator to track 8 to catch the 3 am train to Virginia. The conductor checked our tickets and pointed the way to the business class car. As I walked it, I noticed the Cafe Car was right behind ours  I'd be able to get caffeine with ease and convenience. The business class car is roomy and the seats recline really far back. The upgrade was only $37 and totally worth it.

D and I selected seats far from the restrooms. Since the train did not originate in NYC, there were already sleeping people scattered throughout. Some smart people brought their own pillows and blankets. We got comfy and took out iPods, laptops, and Family Guy videos. We ate some fruit and had tea while we waited to leave NYC in the dust.

It was a slow start out of Penn Station. I kept waiting for someone to hit the gas (well, whatever they hit to move the train), but it never happened. The slowness made me a bit nervous. I started to think this 8 hour trip would turn into a 12 hour one unless things got moving. At this rate, I would miss T's high school graduation. But I decided to relax, which isn't easy for me. Even though I barely slept, I was wired and ready to go.

D and I chatted to pass the time. We talked about work, men, shopping, and traveling, the usual. We watched a few episodes of Family Guy and then it was lights out for us. We reclined the seats, sat back, and hit our internal snooze buttons.

Now, I'm not a light sleeper at all. Nothing wakes me up. Somewhere around Pennsylvania and Delaware, new passengers boarded. Normal people just walk and sit down relatively quietly. Not these people. It was as if a heard of Ringling Bros. elephants stampeded into the car. One even wacked me on the head with her bag. Luckily, the stampede woke me up and not the blow to the head. Did I get an apology? Oh no! The women kept walking. Are people really that oblivious? Do people not take in their surroundings? Most people do, but this one member of the stampede did not. And it gets better!

Rocky Balboa decides to sit in front of D and I. D was still sleeping (I think she must have had earplugs) and had no idea what just happened. She fell asleep with her feet resting comfortably on the footrest. Comfortably until Rocky sat in front of her and reclined the seat. I'm not sure exactly what happened, but somehow D's legs got pushed back rather suddenly. She woke up in a panic, not knowing what happened.

After the shock subsided and Rocky passed out snoring loudly, D and I decided it was time for a proper breakfast. So off we headed to the Cafe Car for breakfast sandwiches, juice, and tea. Amtrak has really high tech ways of cooking your food. They pull out the breakfast sandwiches from the fridge and microwave them. Fancy dining!!! Better than Nobu or Peter Luger. But honestly, this is high tech for me. My microwave gets little use. I usually cook Chinese, Italian, Japanese, or Mexican take out for dinner. Microwave not needed :thumbsup2

We brought our breakfast back to our seats. We ate, watched more Family Guy, and chatted as we barreled into DC.

The stop in DC was horrific. It lasted 40 mintues :scared1: There was a change of crew and people were allowed to get off the train to visit with friends from the Philip Morris company. We didn't bother getting off. It would have been a cruel tease anyway.

We finally got moving again and saw some sights in DC. I really should have taken some pics because we were moving at a snail's pace. But it was rainy and the windows were speckled with water.

Out of DC (finally!) and in Virginia!!! Wooo hooo!!!! Or so I thought. I didn't anticipate it taking as long as it did to get from DC to Williamsburg. Those few hours are a blur of boredom.

When the conductor announced that we were arriving in Williamsburg, D and I bolted out of our seats, pulled down our luggage, and headed for the door. We were afraid if we didn't get to the door fast enough, we would be stuck in that tin can until Newport News :scared1: In the words of Freddie Mercury "Ohhhhh baby! Can't do this to me baby. Just gotta get out, just gotta get right outta here!" (Can anyone name that song???)

As soon as I stepped off of the train, culture shock set in. Usually, when I head south I follow that tradition carried on by our wonderful Canadian Geese. I fly. I had never rolled into a city on a TRAIN. I've seen the movies. I've seen the small, country train stations. But in my mind, those were a thing of the past. Of course a small town would have a huge train station. WRONG!

The Williamsburg train station is a picturesque blast for yesteryear. The white fences, the small building, ONE TICKET BOOTH. It was precious. Not sure why it didn't occur to me to whip out the camera and take some pics. I guess I was just anxious to get to the hotel, drop our things, and see something colonial.

We took the shuttle to the hotel, dropped our bags, and off we went to the Historic District in search of a shoemaker and wig maker.

Here are some photos from our first afternoon:

A shoemaker!!!!

Think he'll make a pair of stilettos for me?

And I won't fall so far behind on everyone's reports! I haven't even made it over to mine yet to comment.

I have a hard time catching up when I miss a day. I wish I could get updates emailed to me :lmao:

I've always wanted to go there....

Ugghhh, note to self: do not take train anywhere unless in Europe!!! Between the Ringling Brothers, Rocky, and the slow-moving train, I would have been climbing the walls!!! I am not the least bit patient.

Glad to hear you didn't miss T's high school graduation! :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl:

Williamsburg sounds like a lot of fun! Can't wait to read the next update!

I'm not patient either and I have no attention span. That's why I teach 5 year olds :lmao:

I'm happy I didn't miss it either. I would have hated to miss the whole college selection process.

Williamsburg is great. Just not for kids T's age.

That's why I teach 12-year-olds -- they have no attention span either.

:rotfl2: :lmao: Believe it or not, Chelsea already has her college picked out! Connor, well, he still can't remember to brush his teeth without being told.

That makes sense -- my two would probably enjoy it for a little bit. Maybe coupled with a DC trip?
