We're going to Great Lakes in November for my son's graduation from boot camp and will have a day in Chicago.

So, give me ideas on what to do. :confused3

It will be me, hubby, DS 16 and son's friend, 20.

Thanks in advance
Michelle

I love Navy Pier, the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, the Museum of Science and Industry...shopping on Michigan Ave...must have pizza at Giordano's...

I miss Chicago

The Art Institute is world famous and totally worth a visit. It's also just a $5-8 cab ride down Michigan Avenue (or about a mile walk from all of the shopping).

JennymominRi and I will be in CHICAGO (Nov 24th thru the 26th),we will be staying for a convention Doctor Who/Sci-Fi) at the Wyndham O'hare Hotel. :cool1: We are so looking forward to it,and will leave straight from there (with a friend from the U.K.)to.......wait.............. for ............it......................DISNEYWORLD!

I know where a convention is gonna be :teeth: Where are you staying?

we're staying at the Navy Lodge on the base. We're flying in November 21st and leaving the next evening. He graduates Wednesday in the morning and can come home with us after 4pm. We're so excited since we thought he would be going straight to "A" school in Pensacola, FL.

WOW! He'll be in Pensacola with the Blue Angels. Shedd Aquarium is fantastic! We try to make it here every year, they have some gorgeous Albino whales and a great dolphin show(try watching it from below it's cool). :thumbsup2

Field Museum - KING TUT!! You can buy your tickets on line!!

As long as you are on the museum campus, check out the Shedd and Adler. Both are great ideas. And don't miss the super duper extra special Disney Store on North Michigan Avenue!

2nd King Tut. I saw it when I visited my family in August. It was wonderful. I'm completely obsessed with Egypt anyway, but I really loved it.

if you have time for a show, the Lyric opera of chicago and the Chicago Symphony are world class, top notch. Millenium park is worth a visit. They will have even started the ice skating (free if you bring your skates) right on Michigan ave. Also make sure you have time to go to the Marshall Fields (now Macy's) and see the huge christmas tree in the Walnut room-I believe that goes up Nov 1. Too bad you'll miss the German Christmas market down in the loop-its the best and lots of yummy yummy german food and cool gifts. That begins the day after Thanksgiving

Come on, those boys really want to go to American Girl Place to check out all the dolls!!!! LOL
That's what we flew across the country for on my DD's birthday!

BTW...I would say Science and Industry and Navy Pier. Field Museum is boring as all get outs and will be booooooring for a couple of boys that age. There is the Lincoln Zoo downtown too and my own son's FAVORITE from our trip to Chicago: the Museum of Surgery (right by Lincoln Park) which has all sorts of gorey old instruments of torture (and a BEAUTIFUL old historic mansion fronting the park).

The art museum is FANTASTIC, but boys would probably be bored out of their heads.

Go tour Wrigley Field also. I don't think you can tour Soldier Field but it's right by the museums so you could stop by there and check.

We get there about 9:30am or so and i want to check in to the Lodge, see where that's located and then go to Chicago, just for the day. We can't stay out too late since his graduation is so early the next day. The gates open at 6:30am or so!! yikes. I read that the windows along Michigan Avenue will have their holiday displays up while we're there. I might drag them all there with me to sightsee, hahaha. I bought their tickets so they're at MY mercy!!

Thanks for all your suggestions (I liked the albino whales)

OMG! I was just going to suggest those places, EXACTLY! I went their this past July and I had a blast! And don't think that they'll find it boring. They'll probally actually enjoy it! I would DEFINATLEY go back in a heart beat! But beware the nasty parking charges. It might be better to get a bus pass or rely on the free trollies. :confused3 Or if you walk everywhere, it may be easier...........Have Fun! :goodvibes

If you just available for the one day - I don't recommend that you tie it up in an musuem all day. I will just take in easy, stroll up and down Michigan Avenue - go down to lower Wacker (below Michigan Ave at the River) and go to the Billy Goat Tavern for a beer and a burger. Then stroll some more walk over to Millenium Park, skate if you want or just sit and people watch with a hot cocoa Then get to Pizzeria Due by 5p for some awesome pizza and then head back north.

I completely forgot about the German Christmas market, we always get the mulled wine with the complimentary keepsake mug and pick up a handcrafted ornament.

suggestions!!

Since it's just the one day I'm thinking the stroll along Michigan Ave sounds good. Maybe a quick tour of Wrigley Field for the boys.

Are you sure there are tours? I only know of tours in early October....Cubs Care Charity does a weekend thing, where you pay $10 and you get to go on the field, the press box and the locker rooms....make sure you check that. Also, just so you know... Wrigley is in the city, but not in the downtown area....granted it just a 20 minute red line "L" ride, but it will take a huge chunk of your time.

Be sure you go up the Sears Tower. The view up there is amazing! Museum of Science and Industry is huge, as is the Field Museum. The U-505 sub at MSAI is really cool and well worth seeing. They have some other cool exhibits there. There are more hands on things at the MSAI than the Field Museum. Shedd is fun. I enjoy Lincoln Park Zoo, but in November not all the animals will be out. There is also the Lincoln Park Conversatory. Navy Pier is fun. My sister and I love the Build A Bear store. Ginos East pizzaria on N. Wells street is really good. That was the best pizza I think I've ever had, and it was seen on the Amazing Race, which is why my sister and I actually went there! :lmao: I love Chicago. We were there just a month ago. My sister wants to make it an annual trip. I love shopping at American Girl Place, even though I'm an adult. I wouldn't recommend eating there. The food isn't worth the price you pay.
