thanks piglet.

i haven't received the listing of kirby's disney shows yet.

i'll hang around for another couple of hours to see if it comes in.
it usually is in my mailbox by 10:30 - 11 on sunday nights.

What a great day yesterday!!! :sunny:
I was in the pool from 10am until 6pm - it was wonderful!!!!! :goodvibes
For 2 1/2 of those hours I kept the girls inside, so they wouldn't get to much heat. During those 2 1/2 hours I floated in peace and quiet:cloud9: Yeah.....it was great!!!! :goodvibes I now have some sunburn, but I don't care, I wouldn't change a thing:)

Mac - Did you have to take the boys to the doctor last night? I'm so sorry they aren't improving:guilty: Since he's not working:wizard: I'll send Tink instead:tink: Hopefully her PD will help them (fingers crossed).

DMM - I'm glad you are feeling well :) I"m sorry about your Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Did they have to cortisone in your hands? Sending lots of PD your way to help you feel better with that :wizard:
**Thanks for asking about my store.
I opened a custom picture framing store very close to my house. I'm getting a slow start, but I'm in a brand new strip mall with only one other place open. I'm hoping that once the mall fills up with businesses, I'll become more busy (fingers crossed).

Crissup or SamIAm - What is the Chicago Lock??? I've lived here my whole life, and I have no idea what that is.

piglet - What is WTG? I"m sure once you say, I"ll be saying, "Oh, I should have known that!!";)

Well, I guess I should go give my flowers a drink so they don't fry today :flower:
Have a good day today everyone!!!

HERSEY - I'm glad Alex is having a great summer :cool1:
*Did you have a nice time at The French Market? What is that and where is it?
castoff - I'm sorry you got fried at The Taste :sunny: Put lots of aloe on it, and that should help some :thumbsup2

Thanks, I tried to stay covered up yesterday but it didn't help.:rolleyes1 I felt the burn through my clothes, ouch.

hmmm would you mind sending me a PM as to where your store is located? I just dropped off a big print to be framed. Planning on having other things done, if not to far would like to help out a fellow diser. DD & I are working on a Disney photomosaic puzzle that I want to get framed after we finish it of course. It's driving us crazy............so hard doing a puzzle within a puzzle. I finally have a Disney bedroom and can't wait to get this thing done and on the wall.:thumbsup2

Have a good day everyone.............DD has a Doctor's appt. for school today, going out of my comfort zone to find this place.:rotfl2:

Good morning all!!!

Hope everyone had a great weekend. :goodvibes

This morning we are heading off to the mall.
Bought DD a shirt from the Disney Store, she wore it once and it disintegrated in the washer!! Now mind you I have a front loader that washes clothes very gently!! The whole hemstitching came off!!! I hope they let me return it. I've heard them refuse a return because it was washed.....but of course that's the only way I found out the shirt was defected!!

Lots going on this week and too much stress!! My heart has been acting up like crazy because of it. So I have to for certain make an appt with the cardio doctor. But I would like to avoid the meds this time all together. I would rather have another procedure then be stuck on meds. :sad2:

slo Spending time in the pool sounds great!! Hope you're using lots of sun block through out the day!!! :sunny:

mac Hope the boys are feeling a little better!!! :goodvibes

:wave2: Hi to everyone!!!

There is a lock at the mouth of Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. It basically raises and lowers boats to the higher or lower elevation of the lake vs. the river. I didn't even remember there was one there until Crissup mentioned it. It's all a part of how they reversed the flow of the Chicago River. 100 years ago, the sewage and waste from the river emptied into Lake Michigan. Realizing this was a horrible idea, the engineers of that time put in a "lock" system to reverse the flow of the river. Granted, things are much cleaner and enviromentally friendly these days, but 100 to 130 years ago, everything got dumped into the rivers around Chicago. It all ended up in the Lake. Thankfully, our forefathers realized this was going to basically ruin the lake over time and figured out a way to prevent that.

Crissup or SamIAm - What is the Chicago Lock??? I've lived here my whole life, and I have no idea what that is.

In order to keep the rivers navigable, you need to be able to ensure a minimum water depth in the channels so the shipping traffic can always get through. In the Illinois Waterway system (consisting, in various spots, of the Chicago River, Chicago Sanitary Canal, the Calsag, the Desplaines River and the Illinois River), federal law dictates a minimum depth of 12 feet in the channel at all times.

In order to control the depth, they segment the river into pools and control the water depth with dams. Of course, when you reach a dam, you need a way to move the river traffic from the water level on one side of the dam to the level on the other side. You do this with a lock. It's a passageway that you enter from one side, then large doors close behind you. Water is then pumped in or out (depending on whether you're going up or down) until you reach the water level on the other side. They then open the large doors on the other end of the lock and you drive out. Think of it like an elevator on the river.

Here's a link to a web site for the Starved Rock Lock and Dam in Utica, IL. The Starved Rock Lock has a visitor center with educational materials for the children (and adults) and a rooftop viewing platform where you can watch as barge traffic locks through. And if you've never been to Starved Rock state park, it's a beautiful park with many hiking paths, water falls, rock formations, etc.

Unfortunately, they don't deserve that much credit. If it had been dumping into the lake, they probably wouldn't have been quite as concerned. The real problem was that the sewage was moving up into the upper branch of the Chicago River and then had no where else to go. So, it was creating quite a problem. So, they created the Chicago Sanitary Canal to "pull" water in from Lake Michigan and route it down into the Deplaines river, reversing the Chicago river and pulling the sewage out of the city.

It's still considered a major engineering feat to this day.

I do tend to wear some rose colored glasses. :cutie: I thought maybe they had the foresight to see that the lake was a major resource (both for tourism and water needs) for Chicago, but it is good to know the real reason why they reversed the river. Has the North Branch recovered at this point or is it still reviving itself?

Slo ~ Way To Go

PBS 11 has done several Chicago shows and talked about the river reversal in depth. Quite interesting history, I think.

Here' more info on why they reversed it: Click here!

Oh sure, prove me wrong! *One* time in my life, I'm wrong and you have to point it out. ;) :thumbsup2

Seriously, everything I'd ever read indicated the problem was more about the sewage flowing into the city as opposed to flowing out into the lake. So, it's interesting to see this link indicate it's more of a problem with the lake. :confused3

MY wrists were the ones cortisoned and it's almost an immidiate cure, i love it :) I've had CTS for awhile, but ever since i started working with jewelry more and then the pregnancy, it just flared up after 5 yrs!! :earseek: I was afraid at first, but my PCP and my OB both assured me the shots were totally safe for the baby, so i ran fast to get them

Congrats on the store and good luck with it!! A friend opened up a bakery in a new strip mall (she was the first in the strip) and at first it was verrrrry slow, but as soon as the entire mall was complete, she had to hire more than family :) :) so i'm sure it will get better!!

Have a great day everyone!!

Starved Rock Lock and Dam

Dropping by to say :wave2: to all the chicago diser's!

I am near Starved Rock and will have to take my kids to the Starved Rock Lock. Very cool!

Starved Rock has nice camping too. Our troop goes there every year, plus there is a really nice lodge and a GREAT Sunday Brunch..:thumbsup2

Hi, Chicagoland! Hope everyone had an okay weekend...as usual, it went by too fast!

MAC...I sure hope your sons all start to feel better soon...YIKES...I can't even *imagine* dealing with the heat we have been having without having A/C...I sure hope it's cooler by you than it is here.

HERSEY..I actually never heard of a French market and I am really curious what that is??

GRACIEGIRLIE...*WELCOME* to the Chicago thread...hope you check in often!!

BUNCHIN...I'm sorry to hear that you are still having issues with your health...I was hoping ALL of that was completely in the past for you...hang in there...feel better soon!

DMM...Hope you are doing okay with the heat...are Autumn & Gabriel excited about the new "arrival"?

SLO..Congratulations on business beginning to pick up a bit!!! Sounds like you treated yourself to some well-deserved relaxation this weekend!

CRISSUP...Thx for the info on the lock and the river & stuff...I learn something new every day!!!

We went to see Oceans 13 over the weekend...and although I think George Clooney/Brad Pitt/Mat Damon are good looking & all, I have never been so bored watching a movie! We actually walked out & asked the mgr what "other" movie coming on soon, & ended up seeing the new Bruce Willis movie, Live Free, Die Harder (or something close to that!). If you kind of suspend your disbelief, it's not too bad (lots of action, violence, NOT for kids), but Mark, of course, LOVED it!!!

Hi to all, have a great day!

Hi..

MAC how are the boys today? Did you take them to the doctor?

DMM hi how are things at your end? IS there anything else they can do for the Carpal Tunnel or are shots it?

Bunchkin take it easy.. no stress it is summer..

castoff how is the burn today? What are you putting on it? How did the Doc go for DD?

Can't keep up with everyone, so hi to all :wave2:

Hi to all the newbies, too :wave2:

Hello everyone...

So...how's the weather in say Rockford?

Some rather nasty looking clouds have moved in here right now but my DD is at camp at the moment (hence I should have warned you all it was going to storm! It *always* storms when she goes to camp!) I'm hoping it's a quick storm and has already passed there. I'm actually hoping it by-passed where DD is at though since I can't contact her. :scared1:

She only went yesterday so it's only the beginning...going to be a L-O-N-G week for the storms to happen first thing.

Becky, we had a 10 second long CRAZY LOUD thunderstorm, super winds, pouring rain, scary stuff and then BOOM it was gone! They said it headed your way to Kane County.
