I have never flown with a stroller. Thinking about bringing an umbrella stroller for our 3 year old. She would not be using it in the airport. Would it be best to check it at the ticket counter or at the gate?

We gate check ours. I'd rather it be handled by as few people as possible and I KNOW it's getting on the right plane. By checking it earlier, you run the very small risk of it not winding up at its intended destination when it is supposed to get there....

although my 3 yo doesn't really need a stroller in the airport anymore, I prefer to gate check it. That way I have it in the airport *just in case* (or can at least use it to hold our carry-on luggage.

Gate check. It's more difficult to scan through security, but easier to strap the kid in at the airport to ensure they don't get lost, or take off on you!

Definitely gate check. In addition to the benefits listed by previous posters, gate checked strollers are always waiting right by the gate when you get off the plane at the destination. That way the child gets a stroller ride through the destination airport as well.
