Particularly in the Mid-Atlantic and NE there has been way too much snow. If you are heading south check what your airline will and wont do for you.
Jetblue seemed to allow changes the day before the storm with no penalties at affected airports. Southwest was similiar.
American on the other hand only let you change if there was a seat available in the same fare class.
Personally, I was on American to FLA and SW back to NY. I was supposed to leave wed (Storm day). On monday they siad I could move up to Tuesday but that I had to pay $100s as teh same fare was not available/ When the finally canceled me on Wed (3 hours b4 takeoff not in advance like Jetblue or SW) they said the first availabel flight out is sunday. As my return flight on SW was Sunday, this made no sense.
AA gave me back the fare (I was shocked it was not a credit)
SW to their credit gave me a voucher for the full amount (no change fees) good for 1 year from date I bought it.
My advice: If u are traveling during snow or hurricane season, either insure the ticket or know that SW is most flexible (unless you are fat - HI KEVIN SMITH), Jetblue will work with you on weather and AA will drive you crazy but at least give you your money back if you are canceled
