Cheaper to buy more RR points?!

Just wanted to say I was pleasantly surprised that when I went to book I was short a little over 6,000 points...so I thought I would just have to buy that flight...but when I went to the option to purchase more points it was $175 for 7,000 points. That was cheaper than having to earn the points myself....right?

Southwest points are "worth" somewhere between 1.67-1.80 cents per point. So, you presumably paid $175 for about $120 worth of points.

You paid 2.5 cents per point. It's not awful, but you paid more than face value.

I probably would have just purchased the leg in cash and earned points on that flight.

I am in the same boat.

If you purchase points and then use those to book a flight, do you still get a point refund if the price goes down before your trip?

I would rather get points refunded than have to risk not using a cash credit.
