Cheap wine thread....

PA laws are very strict. You can not buy outside the State control stores. The taxes are higher.

You can find inexpensive wines but they are generally slightly higher priced than elsewhere. I used to live in VA where wines were $2-3 dollars less per bottle than the same wine in PA.

We can not get wines shipped in either. So no wine.com for us. Also, Costcos, Sam's etc are not allowed to sell wine in PA. It has to be a state store. Until recently we could not buy it on sunday however now a select few of the state stores are now open on sunday.

I thought the Supreme Court overturned that this summer and you can now have alcohol shipped anywhere.

Nope, sorry, they did, but only if they allow instate producers to ship. Which I'm guessing PA doesn't.

I like Rosemont Shiraz, Yellow Tail Shiraz and Greg Norman Shiraz.

I like Blackstone Merlot and also Wolf Blass Cab Sav

I have a good Zindfdel but I cannot think of the name of it....Red not white

Being in PA, I can testify to the issue of finding cheaper, good-tasting wine. I'm strictly a cabernet drinker & tend to be picky with my taste. My 3 favorites in order are Clos Du Bois, Coppola, & Mondavi Private Selection. Clos & Copploa are in the $16-$18 range, the Mondavi I think runs in the $12-$14 range. But what I've been drinking more of lately due to "financial" constraints is Woodbridge, also by Mondavi. It runs in the $6 range. And you're not sacrificing taste either.

I did some taste testing at King of Prussia Mall last month and now know that I don't like dry wines. I like sweet. Are the ones you listed dry or sweet?

I like Yellow Tail and Rosemount Estate shiraz-- you can get them for around $5 when they're on sale.

I don't really mind cheap wine: I'll get the big jugs of Foxhorn or Vendange sometimes and they're fine with me!

You can get really good imported wines for about $6-$7 if you have a Cost Plus World Market near you.

I actually like La Boca at Trader Joes better than Charles Shaw. It's $3.99.
I also enjoy a wine that shares the same name as an overweight character in the Austin Powers movies. The shiraz is very good and usually can be found for under $10

Rancho Zabaco makes a really nice real Zin too. The Rancho Zabaco Dancing Bull is a less expensive version but not quite as good.

I wrote the company and told them how much I enjoyed the wine. They sent me a coupon, however once again PA kills me and will not take coupons.

I'm not the wine buyer in our household, Hubby is. But I wanted to share a bargin that he scored on wine two years back. He went with my mom to her work to pick up a few supplies for Easter and saw a bunch of wine on clearance. He asked the manager what's up with it? The manager said that he was cleaning the shelves and saw that they were past their expiration dates (appearently he thought their bottle date was the expiration date :rotfl2: ). It was priced at $1.00 a bottle and hubby bought everything that was there. With my moms discount he got it for ~.50$ per bottle. Needless to say we had about 100 bottles of wine that afternoon sitting in our kitchen.

The best part is that there were only a few "cheap" brands the rest would regularly retail for ~$10+. SCORE!!! :cool1:

alright folks, my fraternity just had a wine party and we were searching for cheapest, franzia. You just can't go wrong with box wine.

How funny! Great deal!

They have a great Malbec for $3.99 I think it's La Boca. Also Black Swan Pinot Noir is $5.99 Yummy. Estancia Pinot Noir is pricey for TJ's but yummy, $12.99. They have a great white [picture of a beach chair.] for hot summer day, I think it says Catalina on the bottle, has a tiny sparkle to it. Their 'most popular' brand of Pinot Grigio is also good for $3.99. They also have a Sangiovese Red wine that is good for about $7 but I can't remember the name. I buy a few bottles a month for me and for company. I really need to start writing down which ones I like and don't. ;o) Rosemount Shiraz is also good at Costco or Sam's for $6.99. Sterling Merlot is available at Costco and it's good $10-12.

Forgot to add...if you have a World Market nearby, they have a nice selection. It's more expensive than TJs but less than Liquor stores and nice variety. [$8-12 typical, some more and some less].

I just found Davinci Chianti a few weeks ago. I bought 4 bottles for my dd's birthday party (for the adults) and they all went everyone loved it.
I also like Blackstone alot.
both were under $10.

They'd be considered sweet. I do not like dry either.

All this talk is making me thirsty..it's five o'clock somewhere, right :drinking1 :drinking1 :drinking1

Funny, my mom and I say it's noon somewhere, LOL! But then again we're usually sitting on her beach (when I'm visiting on vacation) when we say it. :rotfl:

I like a good Merlot (as I sit here with one now :drinking1 ). I am partial to Bogle, Angeline and BV although I also like Ravenswood and Beringer as well. I will also take a Cabernet in these brands as well.
