We are currently making plans for our next trip to Disney and we will be staying on site (which is a first for us). I have noticed some posts about using a credit card line on your room key to allow you to charge with the room key. Out of curiosity is this mandatory? We have been 3 years now charge card free. We were in debt bad, and it was very hard to get out. Now, we have not one single card, not even for emergencies. The temptation would be too much. Can I just given them the cash, or use my debit card (no visa symbol on it)?

You don't have to put charge priviledges on your room key. They will just put a line on your room key "not valid for charging". You can use cash. I don't think you can use a debit card without a Visa/Master Card symbol because you would have to input your pin and I don't think their cash registers have that capability. There are ATM's all over the place, you can use those. I used one 2 weeks ago at Port Orleans, there was a $2 fee.

I'm sure I read somewhere recently of a family who gave cash over to the desk (maybe $500) so that they could charge back to the room without carrying cash around with them all day.

It would certainly be worth a phone call to find out.

You do NOT have to set up your room key to allow charging back to your room. It is a nice feature for those who want it, but it is NOT mandatory.

You CAN (if you want) set up charge back priviledges by giving cash to front desk personnel. Your charge back priviledge will then be limited to the cash provided.

Thank you for the response's. Unfortunately we have ran into a few snags when traveling w/o a credit card. We have gotten around all of them though. The rental car is usually the hardest.

We are also credit card debt free:) We travel often and I have found the best thing to do is to get a debit card with a master/visa on it. Call your bank or open an account with a bank that offers it. They have the same benefits as a Master/Visa but since the money comes directly our of your account, there is not credit card bill. You can also then charge to your room and upon leaving pay with your visa/master - debit card. There are also ATM machines in the lobbies of all the resorts. There is a spending limit though, it is $1000.00 per day, per card, so for travelling purposes it is best to have 2 cards (same account different name)! We never ever pay for vacations on credit cards, always in cash with a cashiers check. We love the freedom of the master/debit card - you cannot spend what you do not have. I also have a "vacation fund" which is an empty 6 gallon water bottle. My husband and I put all our loose change and dollar bills that are in our pockets at the end of the day & whatever I find in the laundry. You cannot believe how fast that adds up and it really helps out. We saved $600.00 in change in 7 months which we used on our last vacation. Needless to say I love Coinstar!
